I just had a discussion with some friends about making a LEGO Discworld Ankh-Morpork complete with a trash-filled River Ankh. We debated which pieces would best represent rubbish and decided that brown 1x1 studs, apples, bananas, and fishes would be the best. But this project convinces me that it doesn't matter which pieces one uses, but the creativity used to put it all together. Great build, even if it didn't work in the exact manner it was supposed to.

I know I’m late on this, but did you try and make the pieces on the tread that picks up the pieces a bit bigger too, since I think that might’ve helped pickup the pieces from a further distance while having a current too. I don’t know if you’ve tried this but just a suggestion if you see this and still haven’t taken apart the machine please let me know if it worked!

I've seen a very similar machine to remove lint from waste water at a fabric mill.
a belt as you have, made of screen with rails across it, They bubbled CO2 into the water to help cause the lint to float to the top to make it easier to collect.

This is a really cool Lego build! I do not want to take away from that, and from the wonderful spirit that engendered all this.
However, I do think it should be pointed out how even if we could create an army of these things at full scale AND had a solution for what to do WITH all the collected plastic, this does nothing to stop plastic that enters the ocean in micro form via the water cycle.
Impressive engineering is absolutely needed to solve this daunting problem, but it cannot solve the problem alone. Not when vehicle tires and machine-washing polyester create micro plastic shards which end up in the water, the soil, and our blood.
We need inventions and engineers, but we also need inventions to be used, like the tires made out of orange peels that Goodyear has been sitting on the patent of for decades.
We no longer have the luxury of focusing on the big and obvious, because we as a culture ignored it for so long that it spawned a horde of mini-bosses, and this is just not a solution where we can simply cut off the head and be done.
Also, while I'm here, if a plastic thing has a little triangle made out of arrows with a number in the middle of it, that doesn't necessarily mean something is recyclable. It just means that it is plastic that HAS BEEN recycled. The more times something is recycled, the more it loses and the harder it is to recycle. As always, check with your local recycling service provider, but I've personally never lived in an area that recycles #5 plastic.
