How To Gauge Speed For Mountain Bike Jumps!

- Judging the speed for MTB jumps can be tricky, ride too slow and you'll case the jump (which isn't fun, especially on a double) go too fast and you could completely miss the landing! Learning by following other mountain bikers is the best and safest way to get the correct speed, but it doesn't teach you how to gauge speed yourself. Rich Payne shares the techniques that he uses to get the correct speed for jumps and shows you how to apply them in real situations.

My shed, starting from the master bedroom dormer window. Wife loved it 💀
The old way we used to do it was just bomb it towards the jump. If you nailed it, over jump or ended over your handlebars, it was part of learning and fun.
As we grew older, we let others go first to see. Those handlebar flips started to hurt
Front wooden door on 2 milk crates with 5 mates laying down to jump over , great days 🚲
Thank you Jenson Button.
Still getting a video out every day though, that's the main thing.
One other challenge is staying in control when a higher speed is required to clear the jumps. My problem is not getting enough time to practice.
Step ups were very helpful for me. You can vary your speed, you can feel air time and all the technique. But you are much more safe and confident because of ground level is lower. It just makes you want to add speed and air and try jumps, not step ups. And it was helpful for bunny hops too
first time i hit one I did a front flip (without a bike), from then im afraid of steep jumps :D job well done i would say :D
For some reason I do a lot better on hips and fin type jumps with off camber lips. I think it has something to do with the timing pieces of moving the bike in the air that helps me judge it properly. On straight in line sections I tend to dead sailor more that not
For me it's all the mental block for hitting big gaps.
Speed is your friend
What’s the purpose of turning your front wheel inwards while in air of jump? Is there a purpose or is it just flashy? TIA
It gives you style points! :)
It keeps you moving on the bike. A small bar tweak will avert dead sailoring. Plus steez.

In another video (can't remember which one) it's explained that doing this or tailwhips can be beneficial for your learning curve as you learn to control your bike in mid air and save an otherwise catastrophic landing.
Show you have some bits of skills, a no hander never helped to make you go faster but kids at the park love it 😂
I have an intense fear of fear, and I enjoy riding in the woods waaay too much to bother going back and sessioning anything. Sadly, that keeps me permanently grounded. I've really got to get over it to start getting over jumps...
same here. I want to ride but that won’t happen if I’m in a cast or bed ridden. Not to say I don’t do small jumps but I’m not in my 20’s where I can heal quickly.
@@Velo1010 I'm 53, starting on jumps is probably not in my best interest. :)
@@KevinT3141 same here. I’m 52 years old. I do small jumps. This year I purchased knee pads. The kind that are specific to MTB. They actually worked. A few months ago I laid the bike down when I was riding this climb. The back tire slipped and down I went. Saved my knee.
Yo yo negus
12 crank rule. 12 cranks and it’ll be ok.
I was wondering when you all were going to bring up reference points.....
One mistake I see a lot in jumps is the riders putting weight forward causing the bike to land hard on the front wheel throwing him/her over the bars. Surprisingly if the rider is in mid air they can make lightning fast adjustments to the angle of the bike.
What a terrible video lol what were you guys thinking???
well they are getting worse and more nonsensical more lately
Warner bros be like;
"Why am I friggin surrounded by mountain bikers"
Right in the firepit 🔥
