  • Norfolk has topped the list of so-called ‘dental deserts’ where 38 per cent of patients have been unable to access an NHS dentist appointment for the last two years. Figures from the British Dental Association (BDA) have ranked the worst areas in the UK - with Norfolk closely followed by Cornwall and Cambridgeshire where 34 percent of patients have been unable to receive care. In the UK overall, there are 600,000 people currently languishing on NHS dentist waiting lists. Things are set to get worse for patients - a BDA survey of its members has found 75 per cent of dentists are planning to either reduce its NHS list or go private. Earlier this year it was revealed that in some parts of Norfolk 35-40% of under 5s have dental decay.

A lot of dentists refuse to see people in covid. And they took people off the list and blame you for it. Plus dentists are happy to cancel appointments on the same day but when you need to do it they threaten to take you off the list.

I had to have an emergency extraction during Covid and the dentist doing it had the audacity to have a go at me for not being registered with a dentist. When the fact was that I was told by my parents that I was registered at one, only to be told I wasn't when I went to get an appointment. And that most of the dentists in my area had no free NHS patient spots.
This woman wouldn't hear of it and I remember being indignant, but did swallow it as I had to have the procedure done and you don't piss off people who either handle your food or are about to do a procedure on your body.
She expressed that her opinion was that my tooth could be saved (a quarter of it had cracked and fallen off, exposing the inside of my tooth, luckily the nerves were untouched), but because we were in the middle of the pandemic and I had no idea when or if I'd be able to get the appropriate procedure she was saying, and that the longer I waited. the bigger risk I could have with more decay. So, I said just take the tooth out.
But yeah. That dentist who did my extraction didn't have a great bedside manner.

But they can still get free treatment from a private dentist because they’re under 18 🤦🏻‍♀️
Myself and my daughters have always been registered with a private dentist. We’ve NEVER had to have treatment other than check ups.

My daughter, now 34, has never had a filling or extraction, because she has always had an NHS dentist. She moved to Nottingham- she got her son after umpteen phone calls onto an NHS dentist’s practice. She cannot find one for herself. This is appalling, it will cost our country in the future, and it is a deliberate government policy to force privatisation on us.

What a load of BS. I earn a lot less than a nurse and I can afford dentistry. If you look after your teeth, it doesn’t have to be expensive.

The only remaining snag though is if your NHS dentist leaves to go private. This has happened at my practice and they can't recruit more.
So no matter how well you look after your teeth what's the point of that if you have no dentist.

Totally agree. My family and me have never had any problems with our private dentist, but we’ve never needed much treatment because we have always looked after our teeth. This dental nurse is full of BS.

So for her teeth to get into such a state… Did she brush twice a day? Did she have a crappy diet full of sugar and too much starch, not enough protein?

I hope you people in England know dentists make fun of your country, you people dont brush your teeth, smoke, drink sugar based drinks then wonder why you're kids are used in posters at our clinics in Australia. Brush your teeth honestly its not that hard instead of blaming others and worse being bad parents and not creating the consistent habits early on.
