Hey, Neuroscientist here. I hope you read the comments because I might have an explanation for you. GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic don't just act on the digestive system and pancreas, they also activate very specific cells in the hypothalamus of the brain called Orexin cells (also known as Hypocretin cells. The neuropeptide was discovered by 2 different labs at the same time in the late 90's so it has 2 names.) Orexin neurons control things like hunger, satiety, metabolism, and sleep. There are only about 100k in a healthy brain. A lack of Orexin can cause disorders like Narcolepsy, where REM sleep starts intruding on the waking state, with sleepiness, sleep attacks, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis while awake. While people with Narcolepsy have more endogenous GLP-1 in their blood stream, it doesn't have those cells in the brain to act on, so people with this disorder are insensitive to it. More recent research has also found that people with anxiety have more Orexin A than people without anxiety. GLP-1 agonists excite Orexin neurons to produce more Orexin. In short: Ozempic makes you produce too much Orexin A in your brain and it can cause this anxiety. Furthermore, both an overactive and underactive orexin signaling pathways have been found to be associated with depression. I think your decision to stop the medication is a good one. I doubt it would have gotten better for you. I hope you're feeling better now. ♥

Thank you for your detailed explanation. I'm becoming curious about why I seem to be a non responder to ozempic. Other than being newly overly sleepy even during the day and feeling like I'm living inunder double gravity (and with constant stomach pain)... nothing has changed in 4.5 months, especially not my weight, which has remained stable at 190 on my 63 inch female frame. I also have a 10 year old sleeve gastrectomy. I don't understand how i can eat so little, exercise so much, feel so miserable and lose nothing ! I'm lost as to persist or not.

    • @m0L3ify
      @m0L3ify Před 10 měsíci +54

@@reallythere I feel that and I'm sorry you're struggling, too. I have Narcolepsy and I've been told that even when people with the disorder are eating less than everyone else, we still gain weight, and this recent research on GLP-1 goes a long way to explaining why. At some point I had to just accept myself even if living in a larger body is harder. Otherwise I'm miserable, fighting an impossible fight against something that's beyond my control and feeling like a failure about it when there are actually things I do have control over that I can focus on. Like, why devote myself to a hamster wheel of sadness when I don't have to? I can extend some grace and kindness to myself even if the rest of the world won't. I can't really advise you on what to do, but maybe it's worth talking to your doctor about the issue so they can help you decide.

I’m a medical student, and what you described is exactly what’s wrong with medicine today- everyone gets hyped up without enough regard for the consequences (specifically the mental ones) whenever something new and groundbreaking pops up.
I had a gastrectomy a few years ago. I was 18 and very focused on having the surgery. It’s been almost 10 years now and just recently I read this article about the fact that the gastrointestinal system has a VERY substantial amount of serotonin within it (we don’t know the exact pathophysiological mental health consequences and chemical imbalance of these kinds of surgeries.
Let’s just say I am currently diagnosed with drug-resistant major depression (at least I have some kind of resilience in me🤪)
Other than that my weight has been fluctuating significantly and I’m currently “chunkier” than ever.
I’m also very familiar with the feeling of medications “betraying” you by throwing something else about your health and body off balance.

I had just messaged my GP about this because 2 ladies here at my office have had tremendous results. It's as if I can watch them lose weight in front of my eyes. I have Bipolar 2, with Anxiety Disorder, Adult ADHD and R.S.D. I have gained a lot of weight in the past few months and this is after losing a ton of weight...my Bipolar has had my weight up and down all my life. This drug seemed like a miracle, yet I already have suicidal ideations as a viable means of escape if I ever need it. I already wish I had never been born and the depression from the weight gain is heading me in that direction anyway. Even though I say all this I am TERRIFIED of anxiety attacks as before I handed my life over to benzodiazepines I also suffered agoraphobia. I just want to lose weight it's 1 less thing to hate myself over.

I’m a healthcare provider and I think it is like any medication- it works for some but not for all. Even Benadryl can cause severe adverse reactions as you know. I would venture to say that it may tremendously benefit some patients who are obese and/or with other conditions like diabetes. Those patients will be susceptible to other complications down the line and may be on a slew of other medications with different side effects in the future. So I think this conversation could definitely be more balanced.

Imagine being allergic to Ozempic but it's on you system for a whole week and probably longer. A person would be having a non stop reaction to it. Would have to be in the ICU getting steroids around the clock.⏰ It's not like being allergic to laundry soap and you can just get rid of it or a medication you take once a day that you can stop.

I’ve been taking .5 for almost a year - I guess about the same amount of time as Celena. I also have Diabetes - but am also on several other medications for depression, bipolar and chronic pain from injury that left me barely able to walk, fibromyalgia and nerve pain (for which I took Lyrica that made me gain massive weight which aggravates everything)
It has controlled my blood sugar in the face of my I’m having a goshdarn cookie attitude.
I have slowly lost a little weight, but I’m not really checking for that if it happens great. I have noticed some older clothes fitting and other new ones being too big.
I figure if I pay attention to it too much it’ll stop - so I just keep doing what I’m doing and no that keeping my blood sugar in check is definitely helpful.
I take Jardiance as well - which is supposed to make you pee out your sugar. So I really think it’s the combination of the two that’s working for me.
If I notice any change in my mood I’d definitely make a change.
      …and I definitely won’t up the dose

Celina! Coming from both a shared partaker of deep, dark tragedy and trauma in my own life, and an avid visual storyteller, a vocal coach and professional Voice-Over artist and singer, I promise this is relevant, the depth and integrity of your deep vulnerability with your audience is both heart-tugging, deeply captivating and tender.
You are a natural and beautiful storyteller with the unique talent to engage vocally with your subject matter in a gentle sort of perseverance and vulnerability which has a remarkable impact on your capacity to both draw in the focus and imagination of your audience. Also, I do not mean to be flippant, I completely recognize and acknowledge the difficulties you are going through. I just wanted you to know the general effect you have on the rest of us :-) stay strong! In fact…
Know that you are so much stronger than you even realize. Continue to develop gratitude for this wonderful gift of hope you to have that at times barely illuminates The deeper, darker challenging trails life typically exacts of you.
Your gift of laughter manifests as warmth and joy in peoples lives. Understand that your courageous cheerfulness in the brazen face of adversity, is a rare and precious gift. As are you to the world.
You are a marvellous positive force for good, and a net positive contribution to both history, your contemporaries, and this generation.
Nothing happens by mistake. if I had any advice, it would be to stop seeking the advice and counsel of psychics, or other forms of pagan magic, witchcraft, etc. etc.
Your warm, charitable, generous way of loving in combination with your excellent natural instincts are enough. Seek council from your closest friends, the best books, the best available science and information you can access, from sealed and chartered sights like pubmed.
Consider prayer. Above ALL - Stay Honest!
    Thank you!

You might want to ask your doctor about Trulicity. It is a once a week shot like Ozempic, but its not as bad. Where studies have shown that Ozempic can cause depression, anxiety and mood swings, irritability, shakiness, and confusion, studies on Trulicity have shown none of this. The only issue with Trulicity is it heighten stomach acid but not to the extremes that Ozempic does.
My husband was on Ozempic for a couple months and he had to demand his doctor take him off it because he was going through hell while using it. I have been on Trulicity for over a year and have had only stomach acid issues.

@@Flyig_WalrusAbsolutely 100% The pharmaceutical companies dont get rich from making people well, they want them on lifelong drugs. Their influence on the boards of medical schools has completely changed medicine over the last several decades. People/Doctors only know what they're taught and they're only taught to manage peoples symptoms with drugs. And several pharmaceutical reps will visit Dr's offices several times a wk to push them latest meds. The FDA and pharmaceutical companies have a revolving door of people going back and forth working between the 2. Most illnesses today are linked to the incredible vitamin and mineral deficiency of our food and therefore our bodies. As well as additives and oils that cause widespread inflammation from our blood vessels to our skin and joints. Its criminal what's been done the the population. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) helps regulate blood sugar BTW.

Just like other drugs, some people have reactions. People who take it for weight loss take much higher dosages and not everyone can tolerate it. I am allergic to penicillin, so I don't take it. I use other types of antibiotics. I was on metformin as my main diabetic pill and I couldn't tolerate it, so now I take another pill twice day and half a metformin once a day. I was still over 9. You are so right. Nutritional balance is the key to health for most. Alot of our maladies could be remedied by knowing how to use food as a medicine first. Plant before pills. If you clean up your nutrition and look for plants and animal foods that can address your specific health need and that dosen't completely remedy the issue then you can be open to pharmaceuticals. Sometimes it maybe necessary to start a pharmaceutical regime immediately while you adjust your nutrition and then you can start to back off the synthetic garbage big pharmaceutical pedals.

      @krexoriginal Před rokem

@@hollylawless1389 Not offensive to me, it's an honest and important question. I'm not sure what, specifically, you're dealing with. If you, or a loved one, have been diagnosed with a mental illness that is in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition) there is no cure. BUT there are many treatment options that, in most cases, enable you to live a happy, healthy life. I'm not just talking about medication. In my experience, medication alone is not the right treatment. Since any MD can write an RX and new medications were pouring out of Big Pharma like mad, we had a problem with patients being sent off to the pharmacy with an RX and nothing else. Sometimes they were also referred to a therapist and a Psychiatrist, sometimes they weren't. And even if they were, due to the stigma and shame, some patients never went. So for awhile, we had lots of folks taking meds, but nothing else. Over prescribing and mis-prescribing by primary care physicians ran rampant. In my experience, you need a Psychiatrist for diagnosis and medication supervision, a therapist, and perhaps most important, a willingness to educate yourself and make lifestyle changes. You are the most important person on your treatment team. Educate and advocate for yourself, because you and only you can dig deep and refuse to give up. That doesn't mean you have to do it alone. Reach out for help, and start building your support network. In the beginning, it can be very overwhelming. But overtime, like anything new, you'll get better at it. Feel free to ask more questions if you have them.

I saw few magazine covers about ozempic and the amazing results it gives ,iam very carefull about anything I touch like hot spices and nuts I wouldn't touch because I'm scared of having potential allergy same goes with medicines my mum for weird reason always have reactions to different foods and meds so seeing this made me health anxious person while I had some illnesses myself which I still strugle with 😢.my illnes made me stay at home person with not much exercise or walking so it made me gain weight thankfully my weight is pretty stable at 104/108 kg but I was definitely thinking about giving it a go but wasn't fully convinced so I just put the decision to the back of my head hoping to probably learn a bit more about it ,before I risk my health and now I'm glad I had that mindset there's no way in the world I'm gonna take this and will warm my friends and family. I think what all those doctors who prescribe it are missing key safety checks up ! When they give this to people they should make them aware of side effects and make sure people are OK with it in case it will happen ,also they should have a check ins at 1week 2week and 4th week and then every 2/3 weeks and ask the patient is they noticed anything bad new in their body and behaviour Emily story just shows how important it is as well as Celine. 😔🩵🩷🩶My pharmacy actually put a note next to counter saying they out of stock and there is official shortage so just like in US in UK we have the same situation with many people being on it .

The thing about pharmaceuticals is that they behave differently in every body. Because I have suffered from diabetes, depression, insomnia and sleep apnea I have tried several kinds of medications. They are not all good for each person. My first life changing medication mishap was actually 27 years ago when I was prescribed phen-phen while taking Zoloft. Well this is a deadly combo and can cause serotonin syndrome which that long ago they didn't even know existed. I had traveled to a different country when all my symptoms came to head and they thought I was tweaking out on purpose and just told me to stop all my meds. I literally could have died from this ordeal. Ever since then my brain has not been the same. It permanently altered my brain chemistry and brought me so much grief and fear of trying any kind of new medication. At one point I wouldn't even take ibuprofen, I was so afraid of what would happen. Years later I have been able to take medicine but only because I have health issues. I've had so many meds give me horrible side effects that are rare. I usually never read the possible side effects so as to not have any bias of knowing what's possible. Once I start feeling different or not well I will research them and stop them safely. Luckily my doctor listens to me and trusts that I actually know my body and how it's reacting to new medication.

I always trusted the doctors when prescribed new medication until about 5 years ago. I went to the doctor because I was having major anxiety and felt helpless. All I really wanted was a referral to the clinics therapists but the doctor instead prescribed Lexapro. I was taking it for about a week until one night I had the worst reaction to it. I felt the worst fear I have ever felt in my life and I felt like I was going crazy. I was also hellucinating. All of which I had never done before taking the medication. I had my father take me to the emergency room. They treated me and sent me home. After that night I didn't hallucinate but I did have crippling anxiety, constant panic attacks, and for the life of me I couldn't sleep no matter how drained I was. I really lost myself that night, I was broken, lost, and in so much mental pain. I stopped enjoying the things I loved, I barely paid any attention to my son, I was lost in my own body. The only thing that kept me from doing any harm to myself was my son. He was my strength to pull myself out of the darkest thoughts I had. I had to fight because my son needed his mother to take proper care of him. Its been 5 years and I've come a long ways from where I was. When I feel those old feelings creeping into my mind I think to myself, "5 years ago I prayed that mentally I'd make it to where I am today." Its definitely not been easy and I'm very skeptical about medication now. For awhile I wouldn't take cold medicine, ibuprofen, or even caffeine. Anything that caused any kind of mood altering effects. I take them now but I do try to be careful and listen to my body.

The pharmaceutical company that makes this drug, will not come clean about any of this, until they absolutely have to. Look up the number of times pharmaceutical companies have been sued, for actually knowing and lying about what certain medications can do to people. Actually knowing that people have died from certain medications. Pharmaceutical companies have actually been forced to take certain medications off the market, but instead relabeled it and called it something else! Yes, this medication works for some people, but is it worth taking, knowing that there could maybe be issues that show up later in life? When medications start having severe side effects on a large amount of people, it normally hurts more people than it helps!

Thank you so much for posting this. A year ago on May 30th, my mom almost died because of Ozempic. Out of nowhere that evening she started vomiting profusely and she couldn't stop. In my entire life I had never seen her that sick, ever. I rushed her to the hospital and while we waited in the ER she kept vomiting. And she was also acting really off. After sending her for tests it was discovered that she had severe pancreatitis to the point her pancreas had gone necrotic. But also, she had suffered a stroke. The doctors confirmed both as side effects from Ozempic. She ended up in the hospital for over 6 weeks and had to be tube fed for some of it because she couldn't keep anything down. I have to speak up now anytime I see people excitedly saying they've started it. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!! I will also say, I do recall her seeming more gloomy and teary and saying things like it would be better if she wasn't here. Those first few days in the hospital she had said to me that maybe it would be better if she went to be with my dad who passed away back in 2011. Scary stuff. Just don't do it. What you said about no dosing information is a blatant lie. The drug company clearly prints the major side effects as well as the minor, usual ones. They give complete dosing information and a step by step usage on their website as well as phone numbers to call with information. Nobody should Ever take medical advice from anyone on a stupid social media site. This woman in particular has nothing but her own bank account numbers on her mind. As a "mental health provider" you should be aware she has many videos making fun of sleepwalking...which incredibly last for an hour or more on a routine basis. That's pure poppycock. Celina, you're an angel. This will save lives. My jaw hit the floor and tears welled in my eyes. About 6 months ago my primary care Doc wanted to put me on Ozempic to help get my A1C down faster and help shed some weight faster. He had started taking it for both Diabetes and weightloss. He couldn't perscribe it because I've had pancreatitis.
I may well have finally "un-alived" myself after having made several aborted attempts earlier in my struggles with both severe depression and moderate anxiety. I started battling with depression and "un-aliving" ideation when I was 16. I'm 55 now. I was misdiagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder in my late 20's. 10yrs later, we finally realized I had Type II Bipolar Disorder. Very common mistake. The mood swings are less severe than Type I so you don't always notice when you swing up into Hypomania, you're just thrilled you feel better and have more energy and motivation after being at the Depression end.
In the past 4yrs, I've been through quite a few "major life events" that negatively impacted my mood. I'm fortunate, I've always responded well to psych meds. I'd been cruisin' along at relatively low maintenece doses until about 18mos ago, when my psych Doc and I decided to titrate back up. We ended up at the max doses, with a plan to titrate back down when I was ready. This was because, for the first time in over 15yrs, I was battling hard with serious depression and anxiety. To give you the short list:
-4yrs ago I was disgnosed with NASH (a more severe form of non alcoholic fatty liver disease( NAFLD) that resulted in scarring on my liver (aka cirrhosis) and a whole lotta related abdominal issues, including varices (internal vericose veins) in my esophogus.
-Shortly after being diagnosed, I started bleeding out internally due to one of the varices bursting open. Came very close to dying because I had no idea at first.
-3yrs ago, I moved from a place I loved and was very happy, to a place two states south so I could be surrounded by my family and their loving support.
-One year ago, my father died of Parkinson's on the otherside of the country. Dementia took him from me 2yrs before he died when he lost the ability to communicate. I hadn't seen him in over 10yrs, but we talked often. It has been the most agonizing loss I've ever experienced.
That's quite a few boxes checked on the "major life events" list that impact your mental health. Toss in a buttload of chronic and acute pain, well... it's understandable I was struggling with my mental health. You may have connected the dots already, but I never thought I'd be _happy_ I'd had pancreatitis once. If not, we'd have added the Ozempic, and my depression and anxiety would have sent me into a pit of dispair. Having been maxed out on my psych med doses, we would have almost certainly started the Brain Chemistry Polka. It's horrid. You titrate off what's been working for about 15yrs, while titrating up one med after another in search of a new combo. And each new drug can take up to a month before you can tell if it's working. Up and down, up and down and not realizing the Ozempic is the problem.
I can almost guarantee, we're going to see a significant spike in un-aliving and quite possibly the un-aliving of others, domestic violence substance abuse, etc...
This comment is already a bit long so I'll end it. But if you, or any others who see this, have any questions, just ask. I'm all about destigmatizing mental health. ❤️

I truly felt like driving off a bridge just two days ago - I'm so thankful to have watched this video today.... I've been on Ozempic for only a month. I'm a type 2 diabetic and my doctor and I had to fight for almost a year for my insurance to approve ozempic for me. I had to try and fail on so many other medications that made me yo-yo with my weight so much and once I was finally cleared to start Ozempic, I felt euphoric. I happily started with .25ml and felt no nausea or other side effects during my first week. My 2nd week, again, no physical side effects other than a bit of constipation. By my 3rd week, I started to notice that I had a very short fuse. I'm prone to manic depression, which I've worked really hard to develop tools to suppress for over a decade, but all of a sudden I had no control over my emotions. I would rage, had zero patience, and felt super anxious combined with an overwhelming sense of doom. I don't drink, smoke, or use recreational drugs. The only thing that I had changed was starting Ozempic, but after the long battle in trying to get the approval for it, I didn't want to accept that it was the medication. I had lost 10 lbs after 3 weeks and still felt no physical side effects like I had felt with so many other medications like debilitating nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc., and my sugar levels were finally normalizing. So, I convinced myself to ignore the mental side effects since I was doing so well physically on it. I also researched what I was feeling and found no mentions of these types of side effects from ozempic so I also believed that it was just me, that something else had triggered this manic state. However, I increased to .5ml this week and I have not felt this anxious and manic in over a decade. I'm on edge, very short-tempered, and the physical side effects finally caught up to me. Before ozempic I felt very happy and in control of my emotions. All of a sudden, in the span of 3 weeks, I've regressed so much with my mental state. It may just be that this medication exacerbates mental conditions that a person is already predisposed to but for me, I'd rather be fat and happy than skinny and miserable. My doctor and I will find another way to control my sugar levels, but I'm not willing to compromise my mental state. Thank you so much for letting me know I'm not alone in this. Everyone is praising this "miracle drug" and I'm happy to hear that I'm not crazy, that what I'm feeling is legitimate and others have experienced it too. Thank you for letting me catch this early enough for me to reverse course.

Ozempic doesn't cause mental health issues, but people that suffer from food addiction and this who are emotional eaters may experience such side effects, as it physically takes away their source of mental stability/comfort. Without the correct support for dealing with such issues no diet or lifestyle change can work. When people gain excessive weight due to such issues, medically suppressing their ability to eat excessively seems at best a short term fix.

I have never had panic attack before. A few weeks ago I increased to 1.0 (On it for diabetes) and I started having horrendous panic attacks and had to go on anxiety meds. I never thought it could be from Ozempic. Thank you for this.

Thank you so much for making this. I just met with a doctor today to discuss Ozemic. I’m about 200 lbs and I’ve been trying for years to lose weight. He told me about the positive and negative side effects (mostly nausea), but he ask said there were no long term safety studies. I am pre-diabetic but he told me to do my research and then come back. Well, I do have a history of depression and suicidal ideation. I’m so happy I saw this.

Thank you SO much for sharing this. I am about to start this meditation next week and this is the first I have ever heard of this. I am quite aware of my mental heath and emotions so I feel ok with still starting the meditation. But I am now going to be definitely watchful for any increased anxiety/depression and quit the medication if I get those symptoms. Thank you for your vulnerability and openness
