  • AMD's Fiji GPU is the first chip in the world to include high bandwidth memory instead of GDDR5 VRAM. So... what is it? And why is it special? Who does it think it is? The PRESIDENT or something? It needs to get off its high horse. So we made this video to take it down a peg.

  • @RaydeusMX
    @RaydeusMX Před 9 lety +4

    I'll say it again, currently and until VRAM sizes increase the thing about HBM that has me the most interested is how it ends up working with memory stacking and DX12.
    Yes, it is undeniable 4GB is restrictive, but if the bandwidth increase means having a 2 or 3 card crossfire system with memory stacking is going to work as expected then it will be worth it for early adopters. Having 3 way crossfire system with 12GB stacked memory would be awesome once FuryX prices drop some and devs implement stacking support on new, DX12 games.

    • @dumkopf

    So this is high bandwidth memory for the video subsystem. Ok, that's nice. Optane (name?) is high bandwidth memory for the general system. We've yet to see an example, but it's kind of cross between an SSD and system memory. They get that working, it's going to blow the PCI SSDs right outa the water...

    The only new thing here is that the memory is in the same package as the GPU.
    Vertically stacked memory chips have been the standard in supercomputing for some time, it is already mainstream in SSDs (although that memory is NAND flash and not DRAM) and it is getting more and more common _on_ DRAM sticks.

    1:10 - Its not a silicon wafer, its a die. A small cut of from a wafer.
    4:10 - The limitation on 4GB of memory is not due to cost, but rather due to a limitation in the HBM1 standard. It only supports 1GB per stack. HBM2 will solve that and support up to 8GB per stack having a maximum amount of memory around 32GB

    isnt toast not even on both sides because, well at least with our toaster, when you push the thing down both toast slots go on, and each slot has its own heater on each side so theres 2 heaters in the middle so the side facing the middle gets hotter much faster, so if there was only 3 heaters vs 4 it would be both more power efficient it would also get it toasted even on both sides

      SgtRomeo9 it has to be the same chip (architecture) .. a 290x and 390x will be able to crossfire but a 390x and a fury will not. lol basically AMD is just allowing the same cards to crossfire .. lol refresh/rebrands so basically its allowing the "same" card to crossfire

    Won't cooling be an issue with the VRAM stacked vertically?
    I mean with GDDR5 every stack of memory could be cooled individually, in some cards even being taken care of by a special cutout in the heatsink. Will the memory heat up more when it's on top of another or is it so efficient that that's no concern?

      @MrHoward888 Před 9 lety

      ***** Thats why the fury and furyx are VERY VERY hot cards.

    • @imjoeking_
      @imjoeking_ Před 9 lety

      MrHoward888 Fury-X maxes out to around 50-60 c while the TITAN X and 980 TI is 84 c

    • @MrHoward888
      @MrHoward888 Před 9 lety

      dukethedj 50-60c while pump and fan are screaming near 3k. A water cooled card don't count.

      @imjoeking_ Před 9 lety

      MrHoward888 Then why did you mention the fury x anyways? Besides, Toms Hardware got that temps with the fans at it's slowest speed.

    why would you need to overclock hbm 4096 bit memory bus seams to me the gpu is the bottle neck not the memory so things can only get faster.if you have 4 memory chips staked at 1000 mhz is that not x4

    think of when the consoles get HBM combined with unified memory.. by that time maybe we will be able to get 4k 60fps gaming on consoles.
