    I remember them chains on a 494 Deere . Planted a lot of acres with a 1020 ( which I still have ) and the 494 . Thanks for the video, brought back good memories.

    Enjoyed the video. I just bought two model 58 end transport IH planters last winter and rebuilt the 8 row 30" last spring the other was the same thing but it had been modified to an 11 row 20"

      I’m just finishing up on an 8R x 30” White 543 planter. Only thing I’m not sure about is the rubber on the press wheels at the back. I notice Pete isn’t worried about rubber on those wheels…
      Other thing is I 3D printed the drive plate spacer in the seed hopper. Used for White planters with JD seed plates. If anyone needs that part I’ll send the CAD file.

    Great work on the planter, made it a pretty good rig.

    Nice work on the marker assembly of the planter. Simple mechanical just doesn't get much easier than that. Stay safe.

    Your old IH is really coming together nicely! When I was a kid we had a 4 row AC corn planter on the snap coupler hitch. At 8 years old I was in charge of guidance by pulling the rope release to let the correct marker down. Needless to say, I thought I was vital to the whole operation and loved every second of it. You are moving up to big acre capacity with the auto switch / no rope markers. I always look forward to your videos, especially the intro and outro music. You have good taste. Might I suggest a little Jethro Tull? Perhaps locomotive breath.

      You were critical to the planting operation. If you’d pull the wrong rope disaster would follow! I’ll try to include some Tull.

    That's neat how that marker works. We used to have a 1240 JD and I think it was similar.

    I just picked up a John Deere 1240 that has the dry fertilizer boxes I'm going to try doing pelletized chicken manure as a starter fertilizer for my corn this year since I have officially been certified to produce organic milk

      I’m at the MOSES organic conference today, was just checking out chicken poop products. The place I deal with has both pellets and crumbles. They say the crumbles work well. I believe it, I looked at it today and they look to have a similar consistency to conventional dry starter fertilizer.

    I always thought those markers were run by some sort of hydraulics. Pretty neat system- thanks for sharing!

    • @farmerpete
      @farmerpete  Před 4 lety

      The newer planters are hydraulic, probably more reliable and probably more maintenance free in the long run. Thanks

    I like how you described the process of getting the row markers working but what about some beating and banging with the hammer? was there no beating and banging with the hammer? seriously though, good job on this project and I like your attention to the details.

      Thanks! I’ll try to beat on some stuff in the next video 🙂

    That markers is cool on my corn planter just like yours someone fabricated a new marker set up with a separate hydraulic cylinder it’s kind of cool but that’s still cool how the original marker set up works and is this planter from the 60s or 70s

    • @farmerpete
      @farmerpete  Před 4 lety

      We’ll see how it holds up. Should be okay, I don’t plant a huge amount.

    I recently picked up an identical IH56 with no lift cylinder. Can you describe which cylinder best fits this planter as I’ll need to buy it new

    • @farmerpete
      @farmerpete  Před 3 lety

      I use a 3”X8” cylinder, which is pretty standard for older equipment.
