I think we once had an old IH planter similar to that one years ago. It had the liquid stuff on it. Looking forward to seeing the next step of the project. Stay safe.
Great explanation on the plate type planter operation for those that have never seen such an outfit. Good idea to fab your own flighting's for the pelletized fertilizer. The hardest part will be graduating the flighting to feed the material smoothly without packing excess at the down tubes. The originals give you the idea that the shallow flighting keeps the material moving yet only moves progressively more as it gets to the down tubes.
I've run a 56 planter for years. They can be very accurate if maintained. Make sure your knock out pawl's are not worn and the springs are in good condition. check your seed wipers also. Messick's is a good source for 56 parts. I purchased parts from them for my toggle box that controls the marker arms. Those fertilizer augers are junk. looks like someone twisted it with a wrench. Look forward to following your recondition.
The last sweet corn bag I bought had the seed plate on it, but not a number. It said on the bag medium large round. I have a cross reference for the deere plates when they are listed like that.
Still using plate planter in the garden for sweet corn, beans, and sorghum! Love the runner planter, but I think the seedbed needs to be finer tilled and very level for optimum emergence...
The augers might still work if you run them faster to move the pellets and maybe crush them some. just thinking. Good luck. The 56 with disc openers is a very good planter
Could you use the augers out of a stirator bin dryer ? I don't know how you would get left and right flights on the same shaft. Just a thought! Good luck Pete
My plan is to buy a couple feet of left hand flitting and a couple feet of right hand flitting, I’ve found a couple sources online. Then buy some shaft locally and assemble it. Thanks.
Hey Farmer Pete, International 56 plate planter. My drive chain is spinning up to the sprocket connection when it is supposed to spin the fertilizer bar n the corn plate chain. Any advice?
There is a place to buy plates for old planters, and if you send them a corn sample they will help you choose a plate. If you need their info, just let me know and I will look it up.
Thanks, I might take you up on that. I’m going to contact my seed company and see if they have a plate recommendation for the variety I’m going to plant.
I'm not sure but due to the size of what you are calling fertilizer boxes but because they are so small are you not sure they are not granular insecticide boxes
Good day Interesting video. We never had corn planter, hired fellow with 7000 plateless planter. Now will those plates work for manure. I never heard of pellitize manure. Is that cheaper than fertilizer, or are you, yes you are organic? Thanks for now , looks interesting.
Most of it looks pretty good!
Thanks for the show and the explanation!
Thanks

Thanks, I agree that the down tubes will likely be a choke point.

- based on what you wrote this could be where the tricky part is at. but I got a dollar that says Farmer Pete can make it work.
*Flightings. No need for the apostrophe.

nice project update on your planter. show me some more as you move on with the project. thanks.
My first planter was a 56 6 row 30” spacing. I used it for beans and corn, did an ok job.
Like those commercials "Just ok?" 🤣
Farmall Fanatic lol

I agree, that was my experience.

These augers are in pretty bad shape, probably not usable. Thanks.

Don't use the snap rollers off the corn picker. Lol. Good luck with the project.
Well now you’ve shot down my best idea! :) Thanks.

Maybe shoup will have some things you’ll need
Thanks, I think shoup can fix me up with some of what I need.
I don’t see anything in the Shoup catalog for anything older than an 800 IH planter.
I think in my uncle shed he has original cast plates for a 56 planter
I got about 20 of the steel plates with this. I’ve cleaned up the plastic plates but haven’t got around to looking closely at my steel plates yet.

Yes, I’m using pelletized manure because l’m organic. Thanks.
Does anyone have a pdf of the manual for this planter? I cant seem to find any online.
I found mine on eBay, but that was over a year ago. Messick's website has the parts manual online if you poke around the website a bit.
