Rain Queens: I’m about to do what’s called a pro gamer move
Lots of drought here at the moment
@@JL-ti3us there are droughts in the southwestern parts of the country... but there in the northeast (where the Balobedu live) it's still pretty wet. KZN even had floods back in June
@@jlategan8327 fair enough. But even in johannesburg they wre turning water off at times now becsuse we are so overdue for rain. I'm glad it rained along the capes now though
There is no rain queen, let hope from 2024 she will bring rain. Foreigners will have left our land.
Currently we dont have a rain Queen thats why it's dry soon as she climb to her throne we will see rain
I have never come across a CZcams video that made me as happy is this one. I am of the Balobedu tribe, I feel seen. For a a white non-African this guy really nailed the pronunciations of the names. 👏🏿👌🏿
Thanks! I really enjoyed making this video and learning about these queens.
You could say that they literally...
Bless the rains down in Africa
I came here looking for this joke and was not disappointed 😂
Lucas Bevins also down in Africa
These queens really "reign"
BOOOOOOOO
They “bless the rains down in Africa”
Lmao
Lol
Pun intended
Props to you for pronouncing their names 👌
Most of them at least😂
Jarec von Laasenberg I wouldn’t be able to pronounce any of them 😂
Not "Piet Joubert" though. Not even close
It's pronounced Pete, like in Pete Sampras. Not Pee-et lmga
"Near the end of their lives they commit ritual suicide"
Yes, I think you'll find the ritual suicide often happens _very_ near the end of their lives
A fascinating look into a family and a tradition I never would have heard about otherwise - looking forward to seeing where you take your series in the future!
The fact that it happened in November strikes me as eerily similar to "the Harvest of Pomona" and "Samhain" in Europe!
@Dylan L can you give me more details about the fact that matriarchy are suicidal by nature ?

1:07 Fun fact: if the UK had made the change to absolute primogeniture during Queen Victoria's lifetime, the next ruler of Great Britain after Princess Victoria (then Victoria II) would have been her eldest child, one William V. This individual is far better known to us as...
...Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.
(Of course in practice, had Princess Victoria actually been heir to the British throne, she would never have married the heir to the German throne.)
thus she would be married to another royals and have a child not Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, he would be something else
If that happened and William V or Wilhelm II
Became King of Great Britain and Kaiser of Germany
Britain would joined the Central Powers

I believe Pre-Islamic Arabia have a lot of Monarchies like this, we just mostly lack documentation of it. but Kedar did indeed have like 5 or 7 straight ruling Queens. And Some traditions say Sheba was all Female for like 70 generations.
Islam ruins everything
First time a user with anime profile pic that reinforces his opinion! we need Lucky Star S2
thats because for sheba's kingdom..there were no sons born in the royal fam..hence y there is a queen..
@ShalakumX Simba Hold up... which crimes did Neo-Paganism commit? lmao fear the wiccans
@@dinosaurusrex1482 Explain it in detail how Islam ruins everything. As far as i know the Pre-Islamic Arabian history was mostly lost to time due to lack of interest. Even the documentation of islamic history was done mostly through the Quran, Hadith, other oral tradition and preserve document of early islam by Islamic schoolar during the golden age of islam. For some didn't natural disaster and war destroyed the pre-islamic kingdom and it's history ? Beside, Pre-Islamic Arabian Kingdom also faces threat from Roman and Persian. The kingdom exist along time ago, the lack of interest especially at the height of islamic golden age causes it's history to lost to time after a long time ago the kingdom was gone. Most of arabian achievment and the most extend of it's empire could reach as recorded by history happened during the height of islamic golden age. Beside the coming of Muhammad also mean the new time and era where arab was changing it's culture and as far as the recorded history goes, the first unified arabian desert was established for the people at the time, also most of the citizen live in arabian desert was muslim so you could guess the where the interest go. The current flag of UAE, Palestine, Jordan, and also the flag of Arabian Kingdom that proposed by King Hussein of Arabian which was a Sharif of Mecca all clearly pointed out the colour scheme meant the 3 Arab Empire which was also recognize as Islam Empire. Most of Arab state nowaday told the history of the region from the Muhammad time, not many will continue to the earliest recorded of history and archeology of the earliest kingdom in the region, they mention the existence of the pre-islamic kingdom and described a little bit but they will not go to depth

The other day, a descendant of Napoleon married a descendant of the Holy Roman Emperor.
Are you planning to update your "king of France today" and "kings of Germany today" videos to reflect this?
Or will it be wiser to wait until they produce a son?
:)
The kaiser of Germany would still be the hollenzoller prince georg friedrich von preußen. Nothing would change there. Also the current head of the house of habsburg thus title as holy roman emperor and austrian emperor is karl von habsburg. Not the habsburg bonaparte married. So the only thing that changes is king of france today if bonaparte has a child which he doesnt have now.

How about the roman video? 2 of the options are now one. This makes the Habsburg or the Napoleon claim stronger

Awesome work Matt. As usual, a beautiful chart which brings much insight into a terribly underappreciated part of history. Happy to have taken part in this collab with you!
“Theres never been a queen of France”

JordaniusVonRhod there really hasn’t ever been a Queen of France. Their has always been a Queen Consort of France. But that just means they are married to the current monarch. Once the king dies his wife’s title changes to the Queen Mother or Dowager Queen.

There are several different stories relating to the creation and history of the Rain Queens of Balobedu. One story states that an old chief in 16th century Monomotapa (South eastern Zimbabwe), was told by his ancestors that by impregnating his daughter, Dzugundini, she would gain rain-making skills. Another story involves a scandal in the same chief's house, in which the chief's son impregnated Dzugundini. Dzugundini was held responsible and was forced to flee the village. Dzugundini ended up in Molototsi Valley, which is in the present day Balobedu Kingdom. The village she established with her loyal followers was ruled by a Mugudo, a male leader, but the peace and harmony of the village was disrupted by rivalries between different families; therefore, to pacify the land, Mugudo impregnated his own daughter in order to restore the tribe's matrilineal tradition. She gave birth to the first Rain Queen, known as Modjadji, which means: "ruler of the day".
This is correct.
May you pleas recommend a book where you got this information please
That's really interesting. I'd love to see more videos about the lesser known monarchies of the world.
I am glad to have started watching the various videos on this channel. These charts are well done and quite interesting! :)
Rain queens, rulers of the day...now that's some badass title
I legit never thought this day would ever happen. Thank you.
Honestly never heard of the rain queens before, ever. Thanks for the interesting video, I like learning new things.
The rain queens feel like the spiritual diametric pole to Queen Amina of Zazzau in terms of rulership, legacy and persona, yet both are equally fascinating.
Thank you for doing the rain queen lineage. I enjoyed it
Could you make the Pedi or Sotho or Tswana Tribe lineage?
Pedi/Sotho/Tswana are literally like how different Scottish/Irish and English are
Great video Thanks!
Looking forward to more African monarchies 😊
To be fair to England, it's best not to have a king Richard IV considering the bad luck that comes with that name.
Samwise Jay Morgenstern He probably would’ve picked a different regnal name lol
Nice video, Matt. I've never heard of this monarchy before. Could you please make a video about Indonesian monarchies? Perhaps you could make a video about the Sultans of Yogyakarta, a monarchy inside a republic (like the Rain Queens of South Africa) that is officially recognized by the Indonesian government.
PS: This monarchy is currently facing a succession crisis as the current sultan only has daughters. He recently appointed his eldest daughters as his heir even though the monarchy traditionally follows a male-only succession. His younger brothers disagree with his decision.
Ryan Widjaja as a Solo citizen I’m also terribly curious. Our record keeping pre-1500s isn’t exactly stellar
What a great interesting video I loved it. Thanks for teaching us this 😃
Great video. Excellent presentation!
It;s very interesting. I've heard people mention the Rain Queens before but I never learned anything about them until now. It's so awesome to find a matriarchal dynasty the not only existed but still exists today. Even if they don't hold very much political power.
Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video.

Loved this!!!!
the 50s movie SHE fascinated me & I watched it many many times.
it was set in a mythical ASIAN kingdom similar to Tibet's 'Shangrala'
I read about warrior queens from Nigeria that went to war & reigned during Middle Ages
I've been waiting for a subsaharan african video. This is really cool and interesting. I wonder if the tribal kingdom have some autonomy within South Africa.
they don't really have any autonomy. but each of the recognised monarchies can send a representative to The Council of Traditional Leaders at Parliament
That and a certain community's African Customary Law is recognised in South Africa if the people of said community accept it. Which mean these monarchs effectively have any power awarded to them by the communities they live in, so that gives them a lot of potential and cultural power. But being a part of these monarchist communities is also basically a choice, and the monarch may never decide something that goes against the constitution. They are therefore more cultural leaders than political leaders.
Nice video..new subie here..i am from Bolobedu Ga- Modjadji. The Rain Queen land ..i offer Khelobedu lesson, culture and tradition..🤗🤗I love my tribe
This was a fantastic video
According to wikipedia there is a completely new development: the older brother of the crown-princess is about to be crowned, thus reverting back to a male monarch after 2 centuries.
Wow I never knew anything about the Monarchs of Africa outside of Egypt.
@Admire Kashiri I think he's joking since we only hear about Egyptian monarchs

I LOVE usefulcharts.
Poor Vicky would have had as short a reign as her husband as she passed away just 7 months after Queen Victoria.....her story has a great deal of heartache with it....a very sad and VERY painful ending. Cancer of the spine.....
Then history would've been very interesting leading up to WWI, with Wilhelm II of Germany also holding the throne of the UK, probably as William V.
@@Gameflyer001 WWI would have had a very different outcome or there may have been a Republic declared in Britian - it would be fun for some "alternative history" channel to map this out
@@Gameflyer001 she probably wouldn't have married who she did if they knew it could happen..
@@FOLIPE I think the marriage would've still happened, because it was arranged, and Victoria was definitely interested in getting either her kids (or her descendants) on the thrones of Europe. Vicky would've been that much more high-profile if ultimate primogeniture was observed, and Victoria preferred unions with German royals, as she was a Germanophile.
@@Gameflyer001 Well, it's one things having a descendent on the throne, and it's another unifying the crowns of Germany and Britain, which amounts to risking them. I am no expert, but it would seem to me that marrying a high rank but not heir nobleman would have been more likely in this case, to preserve the balance of power.
Awesome learning about something I knew nothing about!
So you mean an Enatic succession? Clearly superior to Absolute Cognatic, Agnatic-Cognatic or Agnatic.
You can always tell the CK2 players in the comments
How is enatic succession superior? Or are you a feminist?
Haha my favorite is equal succession because both men and women can be good rulers but I can see how some people prefer enatic 😅 Enatic kingdoms have really cool history

"Promise of rain making skills"?!... So many Storm/Ororo feels here
Karon Channel she was based on rain queens.
Unfortunately there's been a very disturbing change at the Modjadji Royal House, Prince Lekukela was installed last year over Princess Masalanabo who was to be the 7th Queen Modjadji when she turned 18. Prince Lekukela is the older brother to the overthrown Princess Masalanabo. There's a court battle raging on currently over the matter.
But I've heard that Queen Mosalanabo's coronation is in August 2023 🎉💃🏽
Very interesting!
Apparently the Modjadji Royal Council appointed Masalanabo's older brother, Prince Lekukela, as king of the Balobedu nation with the support of Prince Regent Mpapatla. This was something that happen last year and there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. Some Balodedu protested that they didn't had a rain queen and stuff is going to the South African Courts
According to a reference link in the wikipedia article about the Rain Queens the Balobedu royal council endorsed Masalanabo as the next rain Queen. The linked article from the SABC News is from April 16th 2023.
Could you do a family tree for the Mani Congo?
Ever considered making videos about the Mexica tlahtoanis (emperors, for lack of a better word) lineage? Also the different viceroys of New Spain and their links to European nobility? Note: There's a ton of other prehispanic civilizations in Mexico but probably for this type of video there's more and better information on the mexicas.
The Iroquois Confederacy was traditionally a matriarchy.
@ShalakumX Simba based
Kind of, but not really. The Iroquois had Clan Mothers, but their role was spiritual rather than political. The Clan Mothers appointed tribal chiefs, who were the actual political rulers. Extra Credits has a great series on this.
I thought they were matrilineal but still had male rulers, kinda like Egypt did at certain points
The Iroquois were matrilocal, and female seniors had significant power inside the long house, but it was mostly domestic. The chiefs were men, and important decisions were made by males.
You know what you should do some what if history using your genealogy tree charts ?
It’s possible that one queen died from grief over her daughter... didn’t Carrie fisher’s mother recently die something like two days after her distraught with grief?
I’ve heard of that happening with old couples too.
Yeah it was two days after.
Wow, didn’t know Storm was based off the Rain Queens. Pretty cool.
1:35 If that rule was made in 1901, you would get a few months where you would have Victoria II, then a king William V, aka kaiser Wilhelm II.
Love this
Would love to see charts for the Sekhukhune and Mphephu Ramabulana Royal families, they are reigning in Sekhukhune and Venda in Limpopo province, South Africa
actually if the UK had a male only succession, the King would have actually been Ernest Augustus, Prince of Hanover as he is the senior agnatic descendant of King George I, who was the first monarch of the reset royal line after the Act of Settlement, Richard of Gloucester would not have been King because the entire House of Windsor based their claim to the throne via their descent from Queen Victoria, something that could not happen in a male only succession line
@bbonner422 Tell that to the 44 countries that still have monarchies. They don't its a relic at all. If a country wants to keep a monarchy in their constitution, then they should have the right to do so
@bbonner422 The argument for hereditary succession of a Head of State is that it has the advantages of continuity and predictability of who one can expect to control the means of governance and patronage. No politics is involved because succession is predetermined.
Christ! You only showed me a graph an it was still actually interesting!

Can you do the oba of Benin royal families
Who would be the king of new Spain today? The sons of Moctezuma, the sons of Cortez, the sons of Iturbide ir the royal family of Spain?
I doubt any scions of the Aztec royal line still exist.
House of Bourbon has the legitimate claim, they still maintain King of the Indies and Mainland (New Spain). That would be current King Felipe VI of Spain.
@@cpegg5840 There are probably thousands of descendants. The noble Aztec families were still powerful within the Spanish crown, and there are a lot of documented descendants of Moctezuma II, with the last name "Moctezuma".
The Moctezumas were granted a title after the Conquest, Dukes of Tultengo, and then moved to Spain, and have lived there for more than 400 years, In fact we were still giving them a state pension until 1933. Juan José Marcilla de Teruel-Moctezuma is the current Duke of Tultengo
