We are terrible at listening to warnings about disaster.” In this powerful and prescient talk, Helena’s Sam Feinburg speaks to the threat of a catastrophic blackout, what each of us can do to protect our grid, and the quirk in the human mind that makes problems of this ilk - like pandemics or nuclear proliferation - so desperately hard to solve.
Sam is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Helena, a problem-solving institution that addresses urgent societal issues through for-profit, non-profit, and legislative action.
Helena's first project, "Factory in the Sky,” supported the construction of the first commercial carbon capture factory by the Swiss company Climeworks, which is now operating in 15 countries globally. Its second project, "Shield", catalyzed state and federal action to help protect the North American electrical grid from threats due to solar storms and cyber-attack, including a 2019 Presidential Executive Order. Its third, 'America in One Room', organized one of the largest political experiments in U.S. history in an effort to improve the way citizens evaluate candidates for public office, featured on the front page of the New York Times, and was hailed by US President Barack Obama.
Helena operates its projects with a small group of leaders it calls "Helena Members". They include Nobel Laureates, Academy Award winners, former CIA Directors, Olympic athletes, NGO leaders, technology entrepreneurs, explorers and more.
Outside of Helena, Sam serves as Social Entrepreneur in Residence at The Boston Consulting Group. In 2014, Sam won the World Schools Debating Championships as a member of the England Debate Team.

I grew up in rural GA on a farm. Did not have electricity as a child. Grew most of our own food and raised animals. Had Kerosene lamps, an outhouse, and used wood for fire. It was a beautiful existence. I just did not know it at the time.
We had power but the rest is the same. Also had a petrol pump to get the watr up from the river. Everything we ate was organic.From the milk to the lettuce. 🥰😋

Unfortunately most people do not have the resources or the skills to live off the grid the way our grandparents or great grandparents did. Preppers may survive the longest but I doubt it would be a beautiful experience given how much they would have lost.

Revisiting this essential TED talk and it's been almost a year since the February Texas grid failure. The event caused over 700 deaths and many many people were without water, heat and food for a week. BE PREPARED my fellow citizens.
I have a water source, a food source, and enough solar to get by. If I need wood for a fire the woods around me are full of it. Maybe these people learned a lesson. A portable gas heater can be purchased. Portable solar batteries and panels can too. Water comes from the tap.

Price Uhh, I'm pretty sure hospitals do need electricity to keep monitoring systems, etc running, people with pacemakers also need electricity (their blood flow is artificially kept at a constant rate via an electronic system), and all communication systems rely on electricity (without them no business would function properly and I don't need to say how important businesses are to civilization as a whole).

@@hearing4267 Hospitals have generators capable of supplying all the hospital's electrical needs. Regional blackouts are quite common so critical facilities always need backup generation. Even the communication system in the electric utility I retired from had propane generators on every important remote site.

For three decades I have read and studied the potential risks and damage from a “hit” by a CME or a nuclear explosion causing a large EMP. This is the best, most informative, and level-headed presentation on EMP / fragility of our nation’s power grid that I have ever seen. Kudos! IF by some miracle it does come back it would be something like 10 years. Within thirty days of the grid going down nuclear power plants will blow up. No communications, warning systems or transportation-evacuation for those in the immediate area or downwind from a nuclear blast zone.

The real solution to most of these problems is decentralization.
Centralization is usually very efficient at doing or producing ONE thing, and very bad at doing everything else.
Moving to a decentralized model of energy production, storage, and distribution will increase the robustness of the system many times over, for a (relatively) small decrease in efficiency.

You cannot now divert, store or harness power from flowing water. Saving rainwater without a permit is now illegal even though the demented EPA mandates that local governments require rainwater conservation on new homes in drought areas, requiring you get a permit to harvest rainwater, now required, by paying for the required right to save rainwater for domestic use.

I started 5 years ago. I have been totally meds free for 7 months. I did it without my doctor, because otherwise they would have admitted me to a mental hospital. i lived in a canadian community growing up in the 80/90s that regularly lost power several times each winter, for hours usually, but often as much as a week each winter with a big storm. in the ‘old’ world of that era, phones generally still worked when the power went out, most people had a woodstove to heat their home and at least boil some water, we pulled out boardgames, lit candles and invited the neighbours over. we all had food in the cupboards from out ‘big trips’ to the urban centre two hours away, but the small town grocery store/pharmacy would open up a few hours on a generator, as the shopkeeper knew how to make change.. and still existed before urban box stores ran them out of business. point being, in the last 20 years we’ve lost even these basic capacities in our technologically improved dumbed down societies.
In a massive blackout people in the city would die of starvation while in rural America I’d just die of boredom.

Yes preppers on you tube are constantly warning of what they expect is going to happen. They cover everything from mayhem, pandemics, droughts, natural disasters, nuclear war, government over reach and more. What I didn't hear mention was those of Christians faith who are in their own way spiritual preppers. Many read the Holy Bible and see still more than what was spoken on this vid. It's not a matter of if but when everything hits the fan.
"Prepping" is essentially a way of extending your life by a short time after most others have died. Unless you can quickly learn how to live completely like our caveman ancestors did... You'll die too, it'll just take a little longer, months most likely. Eventually, the bullets, the dried food, toilet paper, and water are gone, and then the REAL fun begins.
For anyone who, like me, thought for a minute that this was from this week, just take a second and know that it says "given in September 2017."

in Tx we had a huge near collapse of our power grid in 2021, our state govt. has known about this for over a decade, the last session of the legislature still hasn't solved the problem, it's incredible

Thank you for sharing this with us. Today I read about the possibility of us having a x flare as soon as a week from now. We are all going to suffer a slow death if it happens in any way. Besides not having food or transportation, we wouldn't survive the oppressive heat or cold in our homes. It is truly unimaginable.
I suspect your great-grandparents (and all those who came before) did okay with no electricity, since electricity has only been in common use for a little over 100 years. Mankind, as a whole, survived the last ice age with little more than animal skins for clothing and wood fires for heat and cooking. That event began over a million years ago, but ended only about 12,000 years ago.
Our survival isn't based on what we have, but on our ability to adapt to what we don't have.
The given stories are perfect examples of powerful people or groups silencing the ones who were warning others, because they had interest about disasters happening. The problem aren't the non listening warnings, the problem is who will get benefit with disasters.

Jack Phillips never went to sleep that night, the night before the collision he stayed up all night trying to fix the Marconi device even though the rules said he should have waited until New York. Can you imagine what would have happened if it hadn't been working when the Titanic hit? The lifeboats would have been left adrift and only would have been found by the Oceanic 29 days later most likely with zero survivors. The Marconi operators took shifts so Phillips probably had a couple of hours of sleep that day. Now he had to take care of the hundreds of messages that had piled up over the last few hours from passengers who wanted to send messages to their loved ones. The other ship which intercepted him that this man was talking about started transmitting their message while Phillips was transmitting his message. Now you have to imagine that the place he was transmitting to was 600 miles away and the ship that was transmitting to him was less than 50 miles away (Some even say 5 miles but that is still an ongoing argument whether it was the mount temple or not) So now the Sleep deprived Phillips who was catching up on all the messages he hadn't sent during the 12 hours while the machine was broken had this other operator interrupting his transmission. Phillips replied with "Shut up old man! I am working Cape Race!" When the wireless operator on the Californian heard this, he shut down for the night.
Another piece of false information is that Philips did not get one minute of sleep until he died that night, he was still transmitting messages when the ship hit the iceberg, when the captain came in and told him to send distress calls to nearby ships, he did. @Ava369 I disagree, we are "blessed" with unreliable supply of necessities from inept parastatal utilities. So, businesses are started to fill the gap, the power goes off all the time, so you get a gas stove and some solar panels, and a water tank for the garden. Post office doesn't function, so people start using private courier companies etc... Most Western countries have harsher climates, but yet people lived there for hundreds or thousands of years without all the modern conveniences. I don't think climate has anything to do with it, I think you just make a plan for the situation you live in.
@@sophieb.8115 We have rolling blackouts all the time where I live, so now we have a gas stove so we can still cook, gas heater and wood burner for when it's cold. Rechargeable battery powered lamps, a UPS for the PC and router, good old fashioned candles. A generator for when it's off for a long time, to keep the fridge and freezer going. Lots of people have solar geysers for hot water, and water tanks in the garden just for rain water harvesting. Of course many of these things only work well for short blackouts, not the prolonged scenario he's describing, and this situation didn't happen overnight, so people had time to gradually buy things, or convert existing home infrastructure.

I’m glad for everything I’ve learned from my Amish neighbors. I can feed myself and many of my neighbors from my barn long enough to bring a newly planted crop to harvest.
And I have a great collection of mantle lamps, candle making supplies, and a well in the back yard if needed.
Nothing beats knowing how to do things, real things. Without electricity. Helps to have a couple acres of trees. But in the end, knowledge is power as it always has been.

In my opinion too much money is directed toward projects in unhabitable spaces (like over 10 millions in Antarctica, and more money in space) instead of thinking about improving our world here where we all live right now, and also being prepared for an upcoming catastrophe. The expenses are often mindblowing and questionned by many. Instead it seems like contributing to more social catastrophes as well as gaining control and power is more important than caring in building a truly better world for all.

He didn't mention that many Powerhouses are remotely controlled, often by one person who is monitoring two or more facilities. A long blackout is horrible but a short one can be nice. I remember the 2011 San Diego blackout. Everybody was in the streets hanging out with neighbors. You couldn't shop -- cash registers weren't working. You couldn't work. You couldn't get captured at home by TV or CZcams! Best afternoon in my life :)
