Hot take, but zero-waste swaps aren’t always going to be the most functional version of a product you’ve ever used (sometimes they are tho!). By buying an eco friendly product, you’re accepting the fact that we have harmed the environment to convenience ourselves. It’s not always gonna be easy to stop using these convenience products, but for me I’m fine working a little harder to keep stuff out of landfill.

Same, I actually bought one because of shelby, I wanted my room mates to stop using the disposable cans and it's never done a proper spray. I disagree with her saying everyone is using it wrong (some probably are), but it's definitely quality control. Mine isn't completely unuseable, its just very annoying and often messy. I didn't want to buy a new one, or get a refund and have it just be thrown out so I kept it

In regards to the final straw. I have the first one they released and mine did also crimp and won't open up despite using a straw cleaning brush. HOWEVER, this happened after I drank a smoothie from it and forgot to wash it so I just blamed it on myself not the product as it was user error 🤷🏽‍♀️
It's so frustrating when people blame the product for their own misuse. But I would suggest that if you're someone who will struggle to remember to wash the straw before everything inside it dies up then it might not be the product for you.
Btw loved the video and such a great concept to film!

Wait...if you use a product the way its designed, it can actually work as advertised. Ugh, user error should def be accounted for in negative reviews. I can appreciate negative reviews for personal experiences and general design flaws, but its also important to be mindful of whats likely caused by improper use by the reviewer

Ive definitely had issues with mold in my final straw! not on the inside of the straw, but in the spaces between the metal and the silicone (if that makes sense?). its REALLY hard to clean in that space, so ive kinda been grossed out by my final straw, unfortunately.

I never liked straws as much, so I didn't feel the need until now to purchase a reusable one. But that thing you said about the cups made me think. You're right, it would be more sanitary to use my own reusable straw. Sometimes glasses and cups are washed so quickly and badly you can see someone else's lipstick mark on them...

This should be a series! It was such a good video! Especially for people like me who depend a lot on reviews when making a purchase on something. Then again, people can have their own opinions but you shouldn’t put your personal opinion on a review cause people might get the wrong impression.

I've been using a bamboo toothbrush for 2+ years now (and actually got my sister to use one as well). I do remember there being a little bit of "woah, this texture in my mouth is kinda weird" but I was never grossed out by it or anything. I don't plan on ever going back to plastic toothbrushes! 😁

  • @ClaireCaoimheRaeMoonshadow

LOVE LOVE LOVE my Stasher bags! As for toothbrushes, I have used the bamboo brush and had not issues with the taste. Surprising as I often have issues with a lot of things like that (I have had trouble using plastic flatware since childhood). Currently, I use a motored toothbrush, as muscle weakness and pain has made it difficult to brush my teeth adequately these days. If you know of a power brush that is more eco-friendly, that would be awesome.

I think many of these swaps have an upfront cost of wither just money or time spent looking for the best fit for you, so that people who are "casually" eco-conscious get put off from trying.
I feel like you really have to shop around for good bamboo toothbrushes. Many of the brands I tested made me bleed from the raw ends of the wood (on the outside, not like bleeding gums from brushing too hard) and some had also much too big heads. But I found one shape that's okay, so I can just rebuy that brand if my current brush ever needs replacing. If I wasn't so keen on swapping, I could easily see myself switching back after the first failed attempts

I was hesitant to buy Stasher bags because of the price, but after doing some research it really does seem like the consensus is that they are the best and that you get what you pay for. The trouble is that while I don't use that many plastic bags, when I do use them it's almost always in the freezer. So I don't get the bags back for months!

This brought back a gross memory. I used to just drink out of a cup when I was middle school. But someone took one of the cups and wiped a napkin around the rim and lipstick came off of it. And now I use straws unless it is my own cups that I washed myself.

I HATE the texture of popsicle sticks, so transitioning to bamboo toothbrush was tough but I stuck with it. Then, last week I had to use a plastic/rubber toothbrush when travelling and I found the texture even worse (after years of bamboo). It was so squeaky and slippery and weird.

As to the Misto, I don't use a product like that. I had purchased another brand that just didn't work AT all, and probable ended up in a landfill after I returned it, which made me feel awful. But my hack for this is to use a tiny bowl and pour maybe a tablespoon of oil into it, then use a silicon basting brush to give a very light coat into whatever pan I'm using. It works PERFECTLY. I also have never liked the spray getting everywhere in my kitchen (it seems like no matter how careful you are, there's always some overspray). Anyway, there's another idea.

Now, I’ve never owned a Pela phone case before. I haven’t needed to replace my old one yet. But I recommended the brand to my sister, because I’ve heard great things about it. And I’ll most likely get one when I need a new case.
However, my sister did not like her Pela case. She would give it a bad review if she left one. It was falling apart, it started fading a lot, and the back of the phone cracked one time she dropped it. This all happened within a few months.
    Great video, as always!

Common reason people get rashes when switching to natural deodorants is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)- i learned that when i actually got a rash from Schmidts deodorants. Ever since I have purchased natural deodorants without baking soda (labeled as "sensitive") I haven't had a problem since.

The thing I don’t like about Stasher bags is that they’re smaller than regular ziploc bags and they don’t have a 2.5 gallon size. The opening in the bags aren’t as wide as ziploc either.

I actually enjoy the taste of my wooden toothbrushes. As for stasher bags, that was a swap I made between jobs so I opted for an off brand. They're pretty good and I'm glad I got them. They were $5 for a 6 pack at Walmart. So probably not the most eco conscious, but still lessening my waste.
Even if you get a product that you don't like using for its intended purpose, there's almost always a way to repurpose it.

I’m actually so glad for this video bc I had not figured out how to solve the native deodorant slipping back down when applying, but was just dealing with it. (Was sticking my finger up the tube to hold it, but then towards the end of the stick my finger couldn’t reach and I’ve just not been putting the cap all the way back on to keep the deodorant up). I have a miisto and haven’t mastered it yet, I do think the instructions leave something to be desired. I think I have like a 30% success rate at getting a fine mist, normally just get squirts of oil, but either way, I’ve committed to it.

I agreed a lot on the fact that I don't find a reusable straw useful. But as she explains in many videos, we don't have too and if some people always used once, why not not buying a sustainable one. I personally ended up buying one because I was struggling more often to drink water out of a glass... Yes it might looks ridiculous but until I find a way to fix my body, it is helpful to me today to avoid swallowing water the wrong way.

  • @elizabeth_marie99

I"m with you on a lot of these products! I personally love my bamboo toothbrush (got over the slight wood taste within days) and I am a huge lover of stasher bags. Now some downsides... I don't wash my stasher bags in the dishwasher because I find that discolors them, so I hand-wash them. Totally worth it to me because they are perfect in every other way!
I also have the FinalStraw (don't remember where I ordered it from tho) but I'm pretty sure it's legit, but my straw does crimp in the middle and I find that very annoying. It crimps to the point where getting it un-stuck is a hassle. I personally prefer just a regular old metal straw that doesn't collapse.
