MAE JEMISON TAKES US OUT OF THIS WORLD FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In honor of Black History Month, we’re celebrating Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel to space! Not only was she an astronaut, she was also an engineer and physician. Mae studied chemical engineering at Stanford University and went on to get a doctorate in medicine from Cornell. Yaasss Ivy Leagues! After this, Mae joined the Peace Corps. Mae applied to NASA’s astronaut program after doors opened following Sally Ride’s flight to space in 1983. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. Mae also said that Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura on Star Trek, was her inspiration for joining. At 31, she became the first African American woman to be admitted into NASA’s astronaut training program. Five years later, at 36, she became the first African American woman to travel to space from September 12-20 in 1992 as a Mission Specialist on STS-47.
