But he is still a deranged, cold blooded killer who cares about no one except himself. Plus when you consider the body count between murdering everyone in this museum, the poisoned cosmetics and the hundreds of people at the parade, he still to this day one of the, if not the, most deadly (body count) comic book villain movie adaptations.

Honestly I feel the same way about M Keatons Bruce Wayne. So much more nuance to the character.
I love the Nolan movies but Bale’s Wayne is more like revisiting Patrick Bateman at his most sane moments. Keaton put a depth to the character I don’t think has been matched since.
The whole movie is just spectacular.

@@RustinChole I think because Nolan has taken these comic books far too seriously, and it’s lost it’s charm. They’ve become oh so serious violent ‘epics’, which inspired a mass shooting at a movie theatre, and the the actor who played Joker killed himself. I think it’s a reflection of our times, where we must take comic book heroes so seriously, probably because Hollywood has run out of creative ideas. Tim Burton is one of America’s great creative directors, and Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Bassinger play their roles so perfectly. Tim Burton’s Batmans are gothic, charming, funny, goofy, terrifying, creative, beautifully shot, and perfectly cast. He was the perfect director for Batman

That line at the end "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" has stood out to me since me and my wife saw this in the Northgate 1&2 Theater outside Northgate Mall in Chattanooga in 1989. Ive never forgotten it. I remember the movie not being what I thought it might be totally but it was awesome.

1:48 I mean joker actually did a nice job on graffitiing that painting, adding his signature on the clean wall of the subway really makes this art Gotham style. This really set the difference between the joker and his goons since one is modifying a classic artwork into his ideal and the others just destruction.

Tiny detail, but I really like how he spares the Bacon piece because he "kinda likes it" (at 2:49). Captures his Joker pretty well, his violence and shock as a form of art, much like how Francis Bacon painted.

This movie should never be underestimated. If you've grown up with marvel movies etc you'd be surprised at what a huge risk a batman movie was perceived to be! Up to 89 if you said Batman, sure us comic book nerds where deep in dark storylines like Death in the family or books like killing joke etc, but on screen..? Yea you thought Adam West.. Kapow (no bad thing, I still love it) but the public would just see Lycra and "camp". Burton had a job to do.. A BIG job. And he nailed it. Nicholson is having a BALL in this film and his joker was VERY similar in story and tone to the comics of the time. Keaton had a lot to prove with negativity in the press. That he just wasn't Batman... And look how he nails it from his first scene.. But for me the most important point Burton gets right is in a character that most of the other movies forget to include... GOTHAM.. This is the Gotham of the comics.. Stylish.. Noir... German expressionism.. And fxxxing dark.. For me that was missed by the post Burton Bat movies. For me Batman works in HIS environment not just some random generic city. Anywho the battle for the best joker will go on and on thankfully.. And I'm sure he'd like that cos like in the comics... he contains multitudes

I was born the year this came out. I was obsessed with Batman from the time I was like four years old. Watched The Animated Series like every day. After getting into comics and reading the books Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, etc... I always though this movie was just that- perfect atmosphere and totally nails the Gotham of the comics. I’ve always thought Keaton was the best Batman, hands down.

Michael Keaton was an odd choice until he turned out to be the greatest Batman ever. People expected a Christian Bale look not Beetlejuice. A century from now I think 1989 Batman will be considered the superior film. Bale's is already a distant memory.
