  • Only have one mic or one channel to record drums? No problem. This is classic mic shoot out set up, but we change positions too. You don't need a cassette to employ this technique, either.

You can also record the different parts of the drumkit on different tracks so you can position the microphone where you want for the different tracks/parts of the drums you are recording. That makes it even more of a way to equalise drums.

Well executed video ! Thats how to do comparisons, back to back, can hear the differences clearly, don't need to use memory.
So good to hear the comparions of different positions back to back, aswell as the different drum styles.

I pretty much exclusively use a one mic technique for drums. I produce mostly 50’s and early 60’s influenced bands and that’s the way they did it in that time period, so it gets results that just sound “right”. But another big part of the drum sound on those old records is the bleed through the vocal mic(often a U47). So if I’m not recording a band live and just recording a kit, or kit and guitar, etc I’ll put up a tube condenser mic where I would place a singer just to get that room bleed. For the kit I either use crotch or overhead technique, depending on the drummer… one’s definitely not always better than the other between players. And with overhead it helps to have the mic not facing straight down but at an angle, not too steep but say like 30 degrees.
And my favorite mics to use on the kit are a 1. A pencil condenser like an akg or a budget friendly oktava. 2. an electro-voice 665. There’s many EV mics that would get you this sound tho, such as the 666/RE20/Pl10 to name a few… they’re all in the line of development that became the modern day RE20. 3. another broadcast mic actually, the Shure SM7. It does that snare grabbing thing the 57 does, but without the harsh mid hump and with more detail. It actually sounds pretty close to how the beyerdynamic did.
Anyway… Cool video, I thought the 635a had some interesting results. I liked how it dulled the crap out of the cymbals. If there’s one thing I hate it’s loud harsh cymbals… oh, and rape. I don’t care much for that either. Well then, on that note… toodles

Mac Demarco used a single mic on drums for the albums 2, Salad Days, and Another One, I think. There's even video of him doing this on a YT video or two. And they sound great, the drums. The mic looks like (and is often referred to as) an AT2020, but it's actually a Roland DR80c.

Interesting stuff! I've made lots of great sounding drum tracks with 1 mic. I liked the SM57 the most, on pretty much everything, followed by the m201, then the EV635a. I have a bunch of 57's for my drums, etc.. They do good on just about everything. I prefer a hi-fi sound and clarity, but the 635a would be perfect for lo-fi type stuff, being darker and kind of muffled. That m201 was great though.. Kind of the best of both worlds. 🤘

Basically, however you place the mics and play diferent styles you get an contrasting sound betwen styles.Depending on music and mic placement you should always choose the best variant for what sound are you searching. As a live guy, mics and placement depend from venue to venue but in the ears of studios, most guys choose the two technically ways in various patterns depending on the artist, album, feeling they try to give and so much more things that needs to be put down on paper.I also think that this representation is purely focused to give you a comparasion betwen the two techniques. Great video. I have done a lot with a single condenser mic about 3 ft over the snare. I believe a lot of early Rolling Stones albums mic’d it this way. If the tracks make it to the daw you can duplicate the track and filter the highs to create a separate kick if you need more punch.

Jack Richardson was my production teacher in college. He did a lot of jingle work before producing The Guess Who, Alice Cooper etc. He recommended the 57 on kick for jingles or music for played on low fi speakers. The mid punch made the kick present. Works well on laptop speakers and crummy 70’s televisions. I’m gonna experiment with the single mic thing for the kit at my next gig. I think the crotch position will work best for sound reinforcement but I won’t know untilI I try it. I wonder what a pzm mic would sound like. Hmmm.

I think the 635A mixed with another mic would be kinda sick. Get that dark full bodied sound with a more detailed high end.

  • @EgonSpenglersTwinkie
    @EgonSpenglersTwinkie Před 10 měsíci +1

I think the EV was probably me least favorite of the bunch in all positions. It lacked high end clarity, and as such, it kind of make all of the drums/cymbals sound a bit cardboardy and dead.
I think for a price-to-sound ratio, the SM57 wins for me, hands down. The 201 probably sounds the best overall, but the 57 is also a quarter of the price, and I don't think the sound gains by the 201 were noticeable enough to make me want to go and spend 4x the amount on a mic.
Overall, I think the BDM201in the crotch position is probably the most usable of all of them, with the Shure SM57 an extremely close second in the same position.

Another great video...but then suddenly on the Jazz it's way too shrill and thin like Rick's Snake Jazz.
Full on video, far deeper than than most.
It's like the old HIFI adage "Rubbish in Rubbish out" buy a good stylus first kinda deal.
    But really, really informative.
The 635 on hip hop reminds me of Greg Bissonette's Drum Loops in RMX drums in the "hip hop" section.
    Amazing!
Whet's weirder is the rock beat room test.
It sounds as drastic as an electro beat where the DJ uses a HI Pass sweep... from the 57 to the 635
The 635 sounds like my old "vinylistics loop sample" CD, pretty much the same ..no eq no compressors,
Awesome again and food for thought when I may get my space set up in the future, I'm gonna make a drum riser on locking scaffolding wheels to move around the warehouse area for different reverbs, and have a small mic collection, knowing this is awesome.

Obviously different positions give you different "mixes" of the kit and some are better than others according to the music genre. I totally see your point and obviously i respect that.
