- Orangutans spend most of their lives in trees forests in Sumatra and Borneo. They get their food from the trees, and they build nests in the branches to sleep in. Their long arms help them swing from tree to tree. They use their hands and feet to grab and hold tree branches and food. Orangutans are very smart. They sit under leafy branches for protection from rain and sun, and sometimes even put a very large leaf on their head like a rain hat!
Family life
Orangutans don’t live in big family groups like other great apes. An adult female will live with her children, but that is the largest grouping. Adult males usually live alone. Orangutans have a very loud call they use to find one another during the mating season.
Threats they face
Orangutans need trees to survive, but they are endangered because forests are quickly being cut down in their habitat. They are also threatened by the pet trade because hunters will often kill the mothers to capture baby orangutans.
Only 1 out of 6 orphans are lucky enough to be rescued - over 1,000 orphaned orangutans are living in rescue and rehabilitation centres. Care of these infants is costly and requires 24hr staff, veterinary, and nurse care to ensure they are in a healthy condition and have the best chance of returning to life in the wild.
All adoption money goes directly to helping orphans at the care centres we support and providing opportunities for a safe return to protected forests.
We are in regular contact with the staff at the centres and our team visits regularly to get updates on the orphaned infants to see how they are progressing. For a small monthly sum you can make a real difference and help these orphaned orangutans survive.
The Orangutan Project supports our ground partners to rescue stolen, displaced and injured orangutans and provide them with care and rehabilitation at our funded rescue centres across Indonesia.
Most of these orangutans are very young, and have often witnessed the brutal killings of their mothers before being sold on by the illegal pet trade.
These young orangutans are usually kept in horrific conditions and when they are found, are often highly traumatised, malnourished, and sick. Once they’re rescued, these vulnerable orphans undergo a full medical check and quarantine period. Many of the orangutans are very young and require 24-hour care, nurturing, and regular milk feeds.
After the orangutans have completed their quarantine period, they can take part in forest school where they develop the skills they need for release into the forest. Young orangutans would normally spend many years learning these skills from their mothers in the forest, so this rehabilitation journey is a slow process.
Caring for these orphaned orangutans for many years is expensive; however, nothing is more heart-warming than seeing an orangutan return to their true jungle home after having overcome so much. When you join our Adoption Program you’ll be helping orphaned orangutans regain their strength, hope, and freedom.
Once you adopt an orangutan, we will email you adoption updates and photographs in April and October. Our adopters love to see how their adopted orangutan is progressing on their rehabilitation journey.
Due to the extensive costs involved with the care, rehabilitation, and post-release monitoring, these orangutans are available for adoption by multiple people. This ensures that the orangutans and others at the care centres receive the best possible care and forest school training to help them once again live free as wild orangutans. Our adopters embrace this and love being part of our adoption family to help these youngsters on their journey back to the forest.

I really envy them. No administration, no household, no husband. Just me and my baby in the trees. Born with the perfect hairdo. You just have to wacht out for a jealous auntie who wants to snap your baby. It’s hard to be a human.

Orangutans and Gorilla mothers are the absolute BEST primate mothers. Very attentive, affectionate and nurturing. They are so patient with their little ones while they learn how to live by watching the mammas example. How anyone could harm them is beyond me

Another great way too help, am assuming the ones that put up the videos are the recuse sanctuary, and by watching all commercials and watching the whole video, and too get as many viewers as possible. The get a little $$ which is put back into the great work that they provide....and a thumbs up never hurts anyone..

@@catg.9034 that's the spirit cat, that's exactly what I do. Although some of the commercial are longer than I like, I'll turn down the volume let it play through. And turn it back up, if it's a documentary. but too be honest the sanctuary and recuse mission, for any type of human or animal are usually the ones I make a point too watch... ( but good for us cat, God bless and stay safe 🙏 )

The color of that baby is very curious to say the least... those orangutans look a lot different than ones that I normally see.
There are 3 subspecies of the genus Pongo, which includes all extant orangutans---Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli. These two look Sumatran, meaning they have lighter color hair that's longer in length than the Bornean.
The Mona Lisa has nothing on this mother and baby.

I absolutely love watching these moms. They are amazing. They hug and kiss the baby and you can see the love in their eyes. The babies are so stinkin cute it just makes me want to hold one just once in my life.

It rarely works that way. The mother is killed to be sold as food. The baby is just a bonus. But in modern poaching the babies are often just killed since the penalties for trading them get more severe.

But by far the largest source of orphaned baby orangutans are the palm oil plantations. When they clear the forest for the plantations there’s no food left. The mother travels trying to find more food and is able to suckle her baby for a few days but it eventually starves, leaving the baby alone. But hopefully her travels brought them close enough for the locals to see the lone baby and it gets taken to a safe place.

Out of all the primates I think orangutan mother's take care of their babies the best. They are so protective and loving with their babies.
