Following on from my 5A and 5B London Bus restorations, I bring you the 5C and 5D Routemaster Buses. While the 5A and B were based on earlier Leyland Titans, the Routemaster was an AEC product with design specification provided by London Transport. It was first exhibited in 1954 with four prototypes entering service in 1956 until 1958. From 1959 the Routemaster was in regular service up to 2005. 2,876 Routemasters were built and due to their iconic status and excellent build quality, 1,280 are still in existence.
The Matchbox 5C Routemaster replaced the 5B London Bus in 1961. It was slightly upscaled but it was unmistakably a Routemaster. It had superb grille detailing and came with BP Visco-static decals, though there were a few rare variations on this. It was replaced by the 5D in 1965 which was again upscaled but it now had a white plastic interior added. However, this came at the cost of the front silver trim.
My 5C example was terribly paint-thinned and had significantly rusty axles. The 5D was in slightly better condition but was again a bit thin in the paint department. Both received a fresh coat of red paint and a very nice set of reproduction advertising decals.

I prefer the 5D because it has the interior and i notice that you have improved on the original by getting tge decals on straighter than they were out of the factory.

I live in Dublin growing up in the 70's the route master was a familiar sight in the black and Amber cie livery always remember the soundtrack of the six cylinder engine 👍

I liked the family picture at the end where you show 4 generations of Double Deckers.
I’m surprised that current Double deckers don’t have lifts in them for handicapped people…..

lovely. :) not sure which would be my favorite, maybe the 5D for it's interior.
I went to London with school class back in '85. we did many thiungs tourists do, but I missed out on catching a ride with the bus... London is a bit big for getting lost. XD but I caught a taxi at least, and the flea market at Portobello Road. :)

Complete shot in the dark, but would you be able to do my grandad/dad's mk 1 Ford escort? I have the model, which I had a go at years ago, but it's the wrong colour and the details aren't there. The actual car (stanley) was in a very bad crash, causing it to be written off. I have the photos of the car before and after the crash.

Is it sacrilege to do a custom of these old Lesney Matchboxes?
Not really. They are still incredibly common 60 odd years later, and those in this kind of condition are very low in value. It’s only pristine models, boxed models and rare variations that absolutely should be kept original. I can’t afford to buy perfect examples of everything Lesney produced so this is the next best thing!
