I never realised that Matt Monro recorded this - very good lyrics added to a great instrumental.
I was unaware of Van Der Valk but I used to hear the instrumental version of this as background music for an Airline commercial in the 70's. It haunted me over the years until one day I heard the instrumental version on one of those elevator music FM stations. I wrote to them asking for the name of the tune and that pointed me to an album by Manuel called "Music Of the Mountains" where if was identified as "Eye Level". I never knew that there was a vocal arrangement to go with it!
It was a legendary 70s British TV crime series.
Ah, "Manuel and The Music of the Mountains". The Latin inspired alternate orchestra of Geoff Love. In both personas he did some wonderful arrangements. Well worth searching for either.

This was played on the radio a fair bit back then, I'm surprised it didn't make a small dent in the chart. Interesting to see Zack Laurence of Mr.Bloe fame on the credits - small world.
There were a lot of covers of this tune at the time - not least 'It's a Tetley Time of Day'...:-)
I guessed this might have got some airplay on radio 2 but was still into radio 1 in the early 70's. Didn't realise Zack Laurence was Mr. Bloe thanks for the info Joe
ferrarial There was a bunch of people involved in Mr. Bloe - Zack was the pianist. I think we all latched on to him cos he played that great piano bit at the beginning. I think he was the main-stay though.

TheSmithDorian ....the instrumental theme to the 'Van der Valk' TV series had already been hugely popular - sadly some tunes do not lend themselves very well to a lyric after the event.
