Today we are talking kettlebells. Again. But specifically today we are talking about how mastering kettlebell swing technique can make your exercise and training experience much better overall.
The hip hinge is a foundational movement for stability and recruiting force and power. Power Cleans. Deadlifts. Snatches. Box Jumps. All these movements are rooted with a good hip hinge and insewrt kettlebell swings to create fluency and confidence in all these movements.

It's the dog constantly bringing the frisbee for me
I just started doing kb swings every morning after I wake up. There’s really no excuse for anyone to not wake up 11 minutes earlier than usual so you can do 10 minutes of swings. I do 10, finish the minute resting, and do 10 more until I get to 100 after 10 minutes. I feel so much better mentally just knowing I’m starting to do something.
10 for 10 is almost the perfect way to go. First thing in the morning. Excellent primer for the day.
That’s a major keystone habit - benefits far beyond just the direct physical benefits from the workout
Just started kettleballs this week. I thought I was in pretty good shape. LOL. I've also started "intense" exercising last week. So doing 3 reps of 30 swings in my warm-up before doing my 3 primary intense exercise (rowing/Stair stepper/ dreadmill) I have now added another 3 reps of kettleball in my cool-down.. All this has taken me to another level. Who knew? BTW, I turn 75 this yr.
I can only hope to keep up with you brother. You’re doing phenomenal!
@@WhoIsJonHarris LOL. I get that a lot. Genetics I guess. Also, I wrestled in high school and I think dieting and at least being mindful of some sort of fitness, went along ways. But it wasn't until 2010 when I ruptured 3 lumbar that I seriously began taking better care of myself all yr round. Except when graduating from boot camp, this might possibly be the time in my life where I am the most phyically fit. Also, I have biked 3K miles for the last 4 summers and 5k the summer before those. Headed to Florida to bike on the 12th. I tell people, no matter what shape you're in, just do something, even if its only 20 min of walking. Thx for the reply.
Swings have absolutely transformed my life! Hard to beat them, as far as what you get out for what you put in.
It’s very reciprocal! As with many things. Match the energy!
I’ve started doing the “hike pass” with bands to warm up, every day, and have implored your 100 KB swings a day.. thanks, brother! Has been an incredible game changer for me. Absolutely love your channel!
the dogs took my whole attention. One hyperactiv, the other one cool as a blues brother
That’s a solid assessment. Creates a very dynamic household haha. Thanks for watching!
this man is genius. i never get through a video of chatting like this
but here i am, focused on the dog....
i'm now armed with more information than i have clicked through in the last hour!
Thanks for hanging out friend. Amos is my best friend.
Throw the Frisbee throw the frisbee just throw it🤣🤣🤣had to rewatch to listen cause I couldn't stop laughing at the dog!!!
so I watched video two times, for the first time looking at the dog and its energy to fetch and for the second time listened all tips
Honestly your first time through was probably the most enjoyable. But glad you stuck around!
I give this explanation 13 points out of a possible 10. KB swings are one of those amazing exercises where everything in life gets easier once you've been doing them for just a few months - carrying the groceries, lifting the kids, changing a tyre, carrying bags of concrete from A to B. It's a superpower. Thanks for laying it out. Appreciated, and greetings from Australia. (60yo - doing a 2-3 thousand 24kg KB swings/cleans/snatches a month now, since the pandemic. Hip-hinge ones, not squat-dominant...)
Thanks a bunch friend. I see so many people getting weaker and weaker as they age. It really warms my heart seeing people that are still making the effort to keep some sort of strength and fitness no matter how old they are. I meet so many people who say “once you get my age you won’t be able to do that” and I have members at my gym twice their age banging out the work. Excuses for days. Swang and Bang brother.
Currently walking with a couple of 5kg dumbells doing various exercises over 20-30 mins, 24kg kettlebell swings 12-20 mins, occasional run 30 mins, chin ups and push ups micro workouts during the day every hour or so which is possible as I'm 67 and retired, 30-50 minute walk without dumbells in the evening with the wife, two sessions in the gym per week etc it keeps me interested when mixing it up. Currently playing around with OMAD 74 kg down to 71.5 kg this morning occasionally two meals 173cm tall male. I enjoy your talks much appreciated I'm from Perth Western Australia.
Sounds like you got a solid regiment!
First time I ever saw a kettlebell was in 2004 in Estonia on a trip. I learned the basics then and have been using them ever since. Now in mid 40s they are about all I use at home. I have dip bars and a pull up bar and kettlebells. Super happy with my health and fitness level.
Thank you for freeing me from glute bridges and hip thrusts…I hate them! Even though I would like to build my butt, I’m gonna keep with my kettlebell workouts…it’s easy for me to do with no gym membership while I finish school and work full time 👍
Happy to help!
I’m 44, started kettlebell training about 6 months ago, I’ve been weight training for a few years & doing Pilates. The kettlebells have transformed my body like nothing else. I superset 1 minute of kettlebell swings after each exercise during my session. I’m so much stronger, I was looking at pics from my track days in college and my 44 year old ass is better than it was at 20! I know that’s because of the kettlebell swings!!
Thank you for this video Jon, I've been wanting to get into kettlebell exercises. I can't stop laughing at your dog lol
Right now all I do is kettlebell swings and pushups, stretching and riding my bicycle. I also do the clean > squat > push press swith kettlebells every once in a while. Throw in some ab roller exercices, and my I get a pretty good overall training routine, which is made of simple, basic movements, which make the body work as a whole. I do not like to isolate muscles, I like to make them all work together. Cheers and God bless !
You’ve got a good plan it sounds! I like it.
Just found your channel Jon. Love the dogs, your shepherd reminds me of my two golden retrievers, who loved their frisbee catching. I'm 72, and been doing Kb Swings since I'm 53, missing a few periods after some wear and tear surgeries, but it's my focal point before I do anything else. I shoot for a 100 min. and some days it's 60 or 80, and then days at 130, 175, 150(past two weeks). Still doing deadlifts, but now lighter and for higher reps off a 3 inch high platform. I totally agree with your idea, to have a process, then good things happen. Epic beard by the way. Looking forward to more of your videos.(No ass shots). GT Sipe
The doggos are a big part of my life. Especially my new Malinois. He’s the frisbee boy. The older pup is a Shepard rescue we got a few years ago. He’s my noble old man. And the little white dog is the crotchety old lady in the neighborhood. Always knows the new drama. And is usually the source.
I’ll do my best to keep my cheeks in the background of the content. But sometimes it just make it’s presence known haha.
Great explanation!
Teaching my dog to "take a break" after this video and thanks!
Probably my most favorite command at this point haha.
Great explanation of the benefits of kb swings! 👍
Good info..... Agreed
lol i love the difference in dogs. The one dog who is always on and the white dog falling asleep sitting there haha
We have a diverse group of pups haha.
same here. a border collie/great dane who is a mouthy, energetic dog and a pitbull mix who just wants to cuddle.@@WhoIsJonHarris
Your dog is awesome. Reminds me of mine. RIP swat.
Godspeed Swat. We definitely don’t deserve them.
Thanks so much, man. You have really motivated me to push forward when quitting was the easiest option. Also, love your dogs!
Reframe. Realign. Take a breath. But never quit. Stay classy!
Great Video!
Thanks friend!
Finally figured out how to do a swing without my back hurting. I'm so old and out of shape that I'm hiffing and puffing after 5 swings using an 8K. I'm also 150 plus pounds overweight 😢 and 65. Im decommissioned condition 😢
I would encourage you to WALK more. Along with the swings as long as their safe. Anyone can make a massive change in their body at any age. Walk a lot. Eat less. But eat more protein l. Always prioritize the lean protein. You can do this!
@@WhoIsJonHarris Thank you for the advice and encouragement!
Thanks Jon. I was hesitant to do KBS at first due to having my right leg/hip, my pelvis and lower back rebuilt after a motorcycle accident. I have found though that I have less back pain once I learned how to do the KBS and I use them regularly in my workouts now.
That’s awesome to hear man. And a hefty recovery! Glad you’re killin it. Godspeed!
Beautiful cool dogs !!!!
Love your dog!!! Great video.
He’s a swell guy.
Love your videos Jon, thanks buddy. Hi from uk 👍
From across the pond, I bid you a good day.
Thanks, great vid.
Thanks for hanging out!
Well done. Thinks I’ll up my kb stuff. Thanks.
My job is done here.
Love your dogs!!
How to make a 2 minute video 7.30 minutes long
Not unique to this video, though. It's like 90% of CZcams videos can't get to the point.
For real.
I mean the dogs stole the time slot
And now I have the watch it because no one summarized it in the comments haha
I believe he is coaching here, especially the reasoning and need behind the movement. I hadn't put much thought into building the hamstrings also to combat sitting for long periods of time.
Firstly, I am Jon Harris. Thanks for a great instructional video.
Absolutely
Thanks will need to try swings. Nice pups
You better!
Godd that throw of the frisbee at “more efficient” was amazing 😂.
Great video tho!
I'll swing 3-4 times per week. I love them.
The difference between a Mal and other dog breeds is evident in this video 😂 Bundles of energy.
I subscribed once you said you watched Robocop. And the dogs. And the advice.
That pup is energy
I agree
Those smart beautiful dogs!
Kettle bells helped my performance on the pump track.
Haven’t been in one in years. But I could definitely see that helping!
I’m so focused on the cute dog 🐕 coming back I had to rewatch and rewatch 🤦🏻♀️🤣😂
I support that.
Good thoughts! To warm-up for the KB swing, I always do banded pull-throughs. It seems to match the movement pattern perfectly.
I do something similar during a video I put out about mastering the hike pass. This exact drill really fires up the lats.
Great content brother subscribed 👍
Thanks for hanging out!
Thanks man
Anything for you brother.
Aww… your adorable doggies. 🥰
ain't they just precious
Cool Frisbie dog 😄
The white dog 🥰❤️🥰. Omg. He or she looks so sweet? Sleepy or old doggo? IDK but I wanted to hug her/him so badly. Just Adorable. Maybe hypnotized by your voice 😊
Robo Cop and fell asleep, more better? I like an honest dude. I'm in, subbed.
The dog is a bonus as well
I am who I am. I appreciate you appreciating me.
You gave an in adequate explanation on how to do them.
I agree. Don’t watch @6:20. It’s a waste of your time. Did I mention I’m a sucker for bean burritos as a bedtime snack? Probably should have put that in there too.
Great video great dog
The dog is crazy he’s chopping the air😂
The Instagram girl comment was funny LOL.. I also like cable pull throughs with a light pullup assist resistance band too to prep for kettlebell swings
It is my dream to get a cable machine for the gym. CrossFit blasphemy!
Take a break ❤😂I’m here for the cute dog and the frisbee😊
way more entertaining for sure
The guy at 0:54 can say bye-bye to his healthy lower back.
Let’s hear it for Belgian Malinois! Best breed ever!
Awesome dogs!
No diggity. No doubt.
That Mali has its own favorite WOD 🤣
in the last 4 months. i have switched from 6 day PPL split to 3 day full body and 3 days KB swings, snatches and Cleans. My shoulders have really grown alot and I don't feel as sore. Before I got into KB i was wondering if I could switch to only KBs but i see now I need both. I am looking forward to see where KB can take me. i have worked up to 100 snatches without putting the bell down.
I think kettlebells are great for a lot of things. Others not so much. It’s all about what you’re trying to get out of your own fitness experience. You should check out the Tactical strength challenge. It’s cool take on strength and fitness I think.
Hi thanks for this! I stopped doing KB swings bc they always hurt my lower back as obviously I wasn’t hinging properly and like you said was trying to use my quads
Would you say still better to do more reps with lighter weights if still have back issues ?
Hard to know what’s going on without seeing it. I would say adding in some planks. Or modified planks can help build the core as well. That’s usually the foundation of the issues. A weak core! If it hurts… don’t do it!
Thank you. I will say this, if you make a slight change into more of a KB Sport swing.... you'll end up with Crossfit Lifters with a better advantage. I'm not saying that what you're doing is wrong, I'm saying that a slight modification into more of a KB Sport swing will give you and and all your athletes a better result.
How dare you show up on this kettlebell hard style video with your kettlebell sport propaganda. It’s insulting. And unwarranted… hahaha! I kid I kid. I’ve actually talked about this a lot with my coach. He’s also a kettlebell nerd. I’ll be honest I haven’t really spent a lot of time with the sport style approach. Always been hardstyle. Throughout my entire coaching career. But here’s my thought. While sport style may be more efficient and endurance focused. It doesn’t seem… fast. It strikes me as methodical and “in it for the long haul” type of technique. Not necessarily applicable in the “fast” environment anaerobic CrossFit methodology. What day you?
@@WhoIsJonHarris you'd be surprised how much more powerful and fast you'll become by simply adopting some KB Sport skills. I'm not sure where you're located, but I'll LOVE to come and share some knowledge with you
Kettlebells, German Shepherds and Malinois! All my favourite things combined. Is your mali as much hard work as people say? I regularly look after a young GS my neighbours have and it can be exhausting. Cant imagine how much work a malinois is.
Totally relate to the frisbee. "Hey, how about you throw this ball for me. Constantly. For ten hours" 😂
I would agree that they are “work” but I’m able to do the work. And I want to. I’d say most people shouldn’t have a dog like this. But he keeps me moving and I keep him moving. That was the intention behind getting the dog. He’s a project! But right at this morning he’s dead asleep right next to me haha. We are side by side pretty much all day.
If you play video games, then you gotta try the new Robocop: Rogue City video game. It's such a good tribute to the OG 80s films. Even has the OG actor doing the voice lines. And yes, you can shoot bad guys in the nuts.
i love that melanoise dont know a rest day
Those dogs are magnificent !
We are on the same page yes.
New to your channel. I’m 77. I have done KB swings in the past, I’m 5’10 160 lbd. Do you have a beginner kb program for we older guys?
Hey my friend. Shoot me en email at jon@whoisjonharris.com and we can chat.
I need some good ideas or plans on kettle bell swings is there a daily plan?
If you search my channel I have a video that talks about that very thing. Lots of options!
I'm here for the dog.
I'm finally learning KB after decades of typical freeweights. Do you find value in Girevoy sport style or go hard style only?
I was talking to my coach about this very thing recently. It’s almost like you’re going to end up landing in one camp or the other. I believe the REAL benefit is commitment to a practice. If you gravitate towards one have at it. Me personally I’ve never found myself intrigued with the sport style method. But to each their own. Sport style seems very aerobic based to me. But hey if that tickles your pickle be my guest.
Just learning KB. What's the difference in the styles?
@@PainterLady czcams.com/video/YBW2wkH5qEw/video.htmlsi=xllEt20oAqSG_xTz
Thanks a lot man,, I want to know how many days I can do swing kettlebell for a week?
Every day. Forever.
If there is any better I like, it's much more better
Double speak is best speak.
Swing on King.
Forever and ever amen.
You're a dog lover? I've subscribed. Beautiful Malinois. Used to to live near Malines
We don’t deserve them. Amos is the Mal and he’s been my project the past year or so. Learning to be an amateur dog trainer has been a new adventure for sure haha.
I can’t get over that dog😂 im paying attention i swear.
Watch again to catch things you missed.
Came here for the kettlebell clickbait, stayed for the dog interaction. I love it.
I support these actions.
Some more demonstration of the exercise would have been helpful...
I see doggo i press like :)
I support your support with appreciation.
your dog is cool ha.
I'm really hoping his coolness rubs off on me.
Nice dog….
Hey Jon, content request: addressing angry QL 😡
Got it. In the meantime…. Pigeon Stretch. Dead Bugs. Look em up!
Is the blonde puppy on valium?
Much more better?!
Unable to agree more than what you just stated.
That dog is awesome. Hope you can answer my question. Just scribed to your channel. What would I look for in kettle bell purchase. Do not want to spend a lot.
Thanks! As with most things, buy NICE or buy TWICE. I can’t tell you how many times I wish I would have listened ti my own advice. Good thing is now most bells are manufacturing in the same place. Regardless of brand. I think most companies now have a similar quality honestly. I would avoid the big box stores though. Those are still pretty bad. Poor craftsmanship. Bad burs that cut. Unbalance. Weird handle centering. Just garbage. If anything save your money for a bit a buy quality. Let me know if you have a certain brand you’re looking at.
If I was only allowed to do only one movement for the rest of my life, it would either be the KB snatch or Swing.
Agreed. Best bang for the buck.
Awesome picks. Personally, if go for the turkish get up.
Dogs a trip
You are correct.
i want a dog now
Der Mali😂😂
Wrong form 2:21
Precisely
@@WhoIsJonHarris that was just a timestamp for me to replay. So I know how not to do it. Thanks for the vid!
Yep I don't do squat swings lol yikes
But…. Why?
@@WhoIsJonHarris Doesn't look very good for you. I have a back neck. Whole thing is fused front and back. I dont mess around.
@@chrisw5742 I would agree. And don’t encourage it. Some of us THINK we are doing it right. But a lot of times were are NOT.
@@WhoIsJonHarris I meant BAD neck lol
If a move is messing me up I will know right away. Good form swings = no problem :-) Squat swings would pull on my neck muscles in a bad way. The ones that were cut...
Thank you Jon! Stay open, even when the communists try to shut down gyms again.
That was for sure a once in a lifetime event. Never again.
You could have saved yourself a lot of time by editing more
You didn't show a proper kettle bell swing.
You never came over and cooked me a steak dinner. Very disappointing. But then again you never said you would. Just like I never said anything about a proper kettlebell swing in the title of the video or even mentioned that I’d be going over that. That’s not the subject of the video. But you can look here at @6:20 and get a glimpse at one. That’s a proper kettlebell swing. Or go to a few of the other videos on the channel.
@WhoIsJonHarris the only person I grill a ribeye for is me. I watched another one of your videos showing proper form. I'm new to KB, tryna learn everything I can.
@@Crimepaysaskapolitician you wouldn’t grill me a ribeye? Even if we were best friends? A tragedy. Swing away Cap’n.
@@WhoIsJonHarris Lol, sure I would.
Holy crap that's a lot of talking.
argh . A dog in the the gym. Hard pass
5:39 into this 7:29 video and he is yet to show a proper kettle bell swing. I'm done not even going to finish the last 2 minutes. I'm going to tell CZcams not to recommend this channel to me again. Big waste of time.
If the title of the video was “how to do a proper kettlebell swing” I think I would understand your frustration. Maybe you don’t know how to do a kettlebell swing. And you were hoping I might cover that. I do have quite a few other videos on the topic of technique. I usually title those accordingly. Please don’t leave me man. I was really hoping we could be friends. Go to my channel and check out the other videos.
Why are we watching a video about someone talking? This could have been a podcast
Too much talk, useless
Is the white dog a Lab/Pittie mix?
Actually we had a DNA test done and she’s mostly Boxer and Chihuahua. Not even close to what we thought haha.
@WhoIsJonHarris Whoa that's crazy. Beautiful dogs.
