    Hey, I'm Sven from This Guy Edits, a YT channel with over 350K subs. I've recently become a Tesla fan boy and want to document my experience with the Tesla Solar Glass Roof as it is being installed on my house.
    It's been years in the making and this version three roof is supposed to be finally ready for prime-time. Generally, I try not to be an early adopter, and would rather like to see proof of concept first. But since the Federal Tax Credit is about to run out, I decided to take the plunge now and see if it works out.
    How long will the process take? Will there be any problems along the way? Will it perform? These are all question I'm eager to share with you and finally get to the answer: Was it worth it? So if you're into that kind of stuff, subscribe. I'll post update videos as the project unfolds.

      The creation of batteries create pollution, not to mention the pollution after a battery is depleted.
      We first need a global ban on garbage export so nations will have to take recycle serious.

    • @kobalov1
      @kobalov1 Před 4 lety +4

      @@Bill-zp2mt nah creation of batteries doesn't create much pollution, its concentrated in one factory that has filters and the whole process will soon get upgraded to dry battery that will not pollute, further once battery is depleted you just recharge it, further once battery is faulty in crazy amouint of time (could be 10 years or 300.000miles) you just send it back to factory where they just recycle it and pollute a tiny bit probably 0 because again they have filters on the chimney but mostly its 0 pollution if factory runs on solar pannels

      @befer Před 4 lety +5

      @@Bill-zp2mt you're mixing up reusable batteries with the ones you buy and throw out. These batteries last, and you charge them up all the time. It's not some toy batteries that you throw out after the toy dies

      Sources? (other than tesla itself)
      Let's say it's true, so all the pollution is "just" kept in filters. That doesn't mean no pollution. And what do you do with the filters?
      For creation of batteries you need raw materials which need to be extracted and brought to the factory. Have to see the whole picture.
      www.wired.co.uk/article/lithium-batteries-environment-impact
      For the recycling I think you are "just" dreaming or "just" never read anything about lithium-ion batteries.
      "As of 2019, the recycling of Li-Ion batteries in most cases does not extract lithium since lithium-ion battery technology continuously changes and processes to recycle these batteries can thus be outdated in a couple of years.[11] Another reason why it isn't being done on a large scale is because the extraction of lithium from old batteries is 5x more expensive than mined lithium.[12] However, it is already being done on a small scale (by some companies[6][13][14][15]), an industry in expectation of large quantities of disused batteries to come."
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_recycling#Lithium_ion_batteries
      As far as it's less expensive to mine than recycling there will be no real effort from big companies to recycle. Welcome to capitalism...
      You "just" rid off the ennergy problem thanks to solar panels. But solar panel have equivalents problems (extraction, recycling) and if you want to run the factory at night you need... batteries.
      @_Beferrr all batteries (reusable or not) have to be thrown out sooner or later. It' needed when capacity became too low for reusable battery. So eventually reusable battery create pollution when you throw them out.

    • @shala2840
      @shala2840 Před 4 lety

      @Donald Trump
      Normal house roof pollutes same as roof with solar pannel minus the pollution of solar pannels (and minus the pollution of batteries if you have some). It reduces pollution compared to what? Dam? Nuclear plant? I dont think so but I look forward to seeing your sources.
      My argument is "try to see the whole thing not just the energy production itself". Am I wrong?
      I'm not affraid of change, actually for some things, I want it to change faster (recycling batteries and solar panels for exemple).
      Denial? Of what?
      What do you know about what I try or not to do that benefits the environment? Do we know each other?

    Will be interesting in how long it takes to get it installed. I've been waiting since early October to get my powerwall installed (4 months). My install date is set for March 11. So a 5 month wait from order time to install. If you want to get a powerwall installed at the same time (highly recommend it if you are living in CA), order it way earlier than you are wanting it installed.

    I do not have a car (electric) but Do have 3 A/C units on the house that need to be fed. Power for the entire year is $2691.80. So the price for solar at this time has a poor ROI fro me. It would be more cost effective to better insulate the main house (Built in 1978 Cinder Block), I plan on doing that in a year or two. That should cut the A/C cycle times during the summer.

    • @ThisGuysTesla
      @ThisGuysTesla  Před 4 lety +2

      Next to better insulation I can also recommend a Whole House Fan, that shaves about 2 months of A/C usage over the course of a year and they run at a fraction of the costs.

    Check specifically if you will be able to rely on your Powerwalls in case of a power outage. I know it might seem logical, but this might require planning and additional hardware to allow for the switch when power goes out.

      I was told but Tesla that the power wall will act as a power generator in blackouts.....it may not power them entire house, but essentials will remain powered

    • @ThisGuysTesla
      @ThisGuysTesla  Před 4 lety

      yes, it comes with a switch that cuts off the grid the moment there is a black-out. It then keeps providing electricity as long as the batteries have sufficient charge and/or get recharged by the solar tiles. I've seen DaErik go off-grid for a week just to see if they would be able sustain themselves and they did manage to.

    The other topic:
    i thought of an idea for marketing Solar further (basically a way to help people envision their roof as an energy producer). I thought of making a video of me presenting the idea for a solar company to use in their marketing brainstorming. I had Tesla in mind, but it could work for any company.
    Since I have not developed my channel, the chance of the idea reaching its intended target (the solar company marketing team) is very slim. (and that is assuming that the idea is useful in the first place.
    May I describe it to you? (I don't care who gets the credit for presented. Once again, providing that it is a viable idea to start with)

    I think you are wrong to want electricity when others in the community don’t have it. Your will to be responsible and independent is actually anti-social and obviously you have personal traits that are not to be honored.
    Best to not stand out and let people know you have you have leadership characteristics.
    Just let the government do to you what they will - you will be happier in the long run.

      Because tree hugging is more of a political branding generally associated with liberal viewpoints and defended by individuals that are socially combative about their ideals and most people are quiet, reserved, and not in a position to pay twice as much or more for products that are environmentally neutral.
      I personally will pay more for green products and love our planet but technology and products must be consumer viable and competitive if we are ever going to reach the masses and stop having to be on soap boxes about the environment.
      I think what he is just saying is he is thinking practically and wants his channel to appeal to the masses and show them if this really makes sense at this point in time with version 3 of the Tesla Solar Roof System...
      Elon Musk is a true leader that cares about the next generation of people. He is pushing sustainability of autos, solar, transit, freight, efficient commuting, etc into the market where it's mass produced and engineered to be not just competitive but compelling, cool, affordable and actually overall better in every way than wat was being sold to us before by old school status quo entrenched ideas and powerful special interest holding better ways from surfacing...
