We're getting a Tesla Solar Glass Roof: Order, Pricing, Inspection, Permits, Install

Hey, I'm Sven from This Guy Edits, a YT channel with over 350K subs. I've recently become a Tesla fan boy and want to document my experience with the Tesla Solar Glass Roof as it is being installed on my house.
It's been years in the making and this version three roof is supposed to be finally ready for prime-time. Generally, I try not to be an early adopter, and would rather like to see proof of concept first. But since the Federal Tax Credit is about to run out, I decided to take the plunge now and see if it works out.
How long will the process take? Will there be any problems along the way? Will it perform? These are all question I'm eager to share with you and finally get to the answer: Was it worth it? So if you're into that kind of stuff, subscribe. I'll post update videos as the project unfolds.

We had solar installed 5 years ago. I think they took more time and effort doing the paperwork. We had to wait 6 months until the state legislature doubled the amount of 100% net metering. It took 15+ years to use up the first block of net metering. They doubled the amount. The second block was gone in less then a year. We were not told that they delays was because the state net metering was exhausted and they where waiting for the stabilized. Oh well, we are now grandfathered into 20 years of 100% net-metering. The net metering will also carry over from month to month. I don't think it carry overs from year to year, but we use up all the carry over before December. And now that we have a Tesla Model 3, even earlier.
We did pretty well on rebates. on a $34,000 system $11,000 federal, $2500 state.
One thing to consider is to move one of the bathroom vents if that helps to open up useable roof area. It's not too difficult or expensive to put a horizontal PVC section in the attic to move a roof vent by 6 feet or so. The turbine vents are easy to move too.
that's an interesting idea. I'll run that by them tomorrow.
I have to thank you. I ran this by Tesla and they went for it. We now included active solar tiles on the bigger of the two SE facing roof-sides and this increases the system by another 1KW. This wouldn't have happened without your comment! So thank you.
@@ThisGuysTesla what a great moment right here.
@@ThisGuysTesla Cool! Glad I could help. Hopefully the Tesla install design team will take this option into account for others as well.
It was immediately obvious as soon as I saw the roof plan. Once the original roof is off, one can relocate most things that penetrate it. But there again, I _am_ an industrial designer - retired.
BTW, knowing how electricity and solar systems work, their explanation makes sense. They need to wire multiple panels together in series to get the voltage up high enough. All the panels that are in series need to have the same output or the lower ones become resistors. One single shaded panel in a series string can shutdown the entire panel. So, that all makes sense to me. Good luck with the system. Even though I already have a conventional solar system I am very interested in seeing how yours works out.
you can add micro-inverters per panel, does Tesla offer that?
100% NOT accurate in your statement. It takes DEEP shade to shut off a panel affecting the string. The whole string will work at lower efficiency of the shaded panel which means power collected/area is lower which means $$$/KWh increases. Mppt controller does not care.
@@w8stral Shutdown was an inaccurate word. All of the panels will work at the shaded level, which in the case of mine is extremely low. It might as well be shutdown.
@@HitechProductions Well no. If you have ever worked with panels with your own hands you would know this to be inaccurate. WOrk poorly? Yes. Shutdown? No. All this really shows is that TESLA's roof, sucks for installation and the designers have been given VERY stringent criteria for what they are allowed to do for COST reasons, NOT reality. Permit denied... oh wait... here is a solution... cost increases, but a solution... Of course for same increased cost could literally buy 3KWh of normal panels, or for same damned cost(less actually) they could get off their asses and move the roof plumbing vents and attic vents onto a different section of roof allowing the correct orientation and superior efficiency.
@@w8stral sooner or later we need to remodel rooves, certainly new builds that are just right angle right orientation made up of the interlocking panels themselves, solar tiles are I am afraid up there with hyperloops, tunnels and satellite arrays, he needs some mechanical engineers on the team to bring him down to Earth, we can't afford these billionaire dreams in ecological terms
That’s a great price for a new roof AND solar panels AND 2 power walls. Hope it all works out!
It's called Azimuth, the angle towards the sun that you mention :)
Your content production is really excellent. You should have many more subscribers! 😊👍
My brother has all venting to one motor that’s right near the vent on the side of his house. Many switches, kitchen hood, washroom, dryer, control one motor and fan. It’s very quiet. A light was installed on the switch to indicate “in use”.
Interesting to see another Tesla install coming along 👍 The power of the system is interesting because the total amount would equal to about 22 conventional PV panels. Would be cool to compare maximum output by a conventional installation compared to Tesla Solar on your particular roof👍⚡️
6:15 thought I got some discord notifications
samee
i legit paused the video lmao
I opened discord while watching and then I realised I don’t have notifications switched on anymore 😂
Yup me too
Bravo dude. Too many give up at the first hurdle. When they do it ends up costing them more for the system or they are no longer able to afford going green.
I've flipped a few cottages like this. The best way to improve curb appeal and increase the value small cottages, aside from adding square footage and new bathrooms and a kitchen is increasing the pitch of the roof. Of course there is the initial expense. But you would get more panels provided there is enough room for each sequence.
I'm at ta similar point with my solar roof. More power company said they received Tesla's application.
I converted my house to electric and removed all the furnace vents. This increased my solar rating dramatically. The current design is 10.06 kW, with one more change pending. The pending change should get me to 10.25 kW. I'm only putting in one PowerWall for now.
I wonder if you could have rerouted some of the vent pipes in the attic to combine with another penetration that already exists or a new one in a better location. If it's code legal to use PVC pipe, this would be an easy installation.
Amazing! Great to hear all this news. Makes me excited about doing something like this in the future!
6:15 really threw me off and I couldn't find my Discord notification.
Thank you for the information. It is very useful!
Glad it was helpful!
Best of luck, looking forward to seeing the process
That Self Generating Incentive sounds awesome! Definitely gotta let my parents know about that one.
Great job on the research, and the savings!
I‘m not from the states so let me ask; why the heck do you need a permit for using energy you accumulate through solar panels you paid for?
Safety
What was the city's reason for requiring a balance of solar to storage? Are they just trying to prevent people from charging batteries when rates are low to provide when rates are high?
Very helpful information
No updates in 2 months??! :(
Thanks for the update.
Angles or pitches in solar terms are called different azimuths angles.
If you go with solar panels on top of the existing shingles, you have to remove the panels if you ever have to replace the shingle roof. Not a good idea.
Put on a metal roof and never have to worry about it
FYI ~ it is: Pitch and Yaw
Sven, I love your editing that's how I got here ;). Looking to order the solar tile too myself. But you have net metering. Whats your rationale behind buying the power walls
Protection against blackouts
@@ThisGuysTesla it's not just that. You can produce and use energy during the day with the batteries and charger them at night at a 66% discount as well.
Batteries provide a place for excess load to go during power outage, otherwise solar will shitdown
Did you manage to get the rebate for the powerwalls? Any chance you can share some info about the forms to fill? I tried to find them but got lost...
still waiting. I've been told that it can take up to a year to hear from the government department. They paperwork is done by Tesla, but you have to request them to go through the process.
The roof panels which they will not install, will it have original shingles or they have maybe some kind of non-solar tesla shingles to match the remaining roof?
They do
Whats your microphone?
Will the roof have a cooling effect, due to converting sun energy into elektric rather than thermal engergy?
I'll find out in the summer :)
Why are Tesla and the dealers so reluctant to max out the systems?
Did you get your Tesla roof installed??
Can Tesla install regular solar panels over top of inactive tiles to increase total output?
Do you have to do the net metering with the city? Can you run your system with it is all my power all the time and pretty much go off grid? How many days to you expect the batteries to last if zero sun? If if you do need power, my friend runs a generator the few times he might run out of power. He had issues with the city going completely off grid, the city and power company were not fans, but for the amount of money he needed to pay to stay hooked to the grid, he could buy 20 gallons of fuel to supply the generator and that was a limited as needed basis, so basically he would pocket his over priced solar connection fee to the grid.
you have to have net metering if you are connected to the grid. I have no intention to get off grid, at least not until I have a working system that can get me through the year with access. I have no intention to run a gas powered generator.
@@ThisGuysTesla The way the oil market is falling, the cheapest way to power your home may be to forget the grid, forget solar, and just run a small diesel generator
@@cindytepper8878 but its not going to go for long tho
@@BlaqZ Depending on how bad this covid19 thing lasts the grid could go down. Then I'll be using nothing but coal
Beware of going off the grid, even tough you can technically. You won't be able to sell your house and I've heard PG&E will charge you 40K to reconnect later.
Sven, random question, but your name makes me curious... are you/ your relatives originally from germany? :)
We had ours installed in April and it Sat, unused for 2.5 months. Tesla told us we Had To Have Gutters B4 they would let us use our system. 🤔🦇💩🤪 We had a contract with Tesla for that....they refused then they relented and had gutters installed (those guys came out, ran a machine and left in 3 hours! They were Great). Now we have solar from 8-5!! That's it! 🤔😳🤪 Makes ya angry. We'll see what happens next
Input, output. Capacity.
I just had my PW installed and was told that Tesla had used up their SGIP allotment with PG&E. If you get that rebate, please let me know!
I will.
@@ThisGuysTesla - I'm also a PG&E gas-only customer. What or how did you approach your gas-only provider for the SGIP rebate?
The point is, Tesla knew very well that a 6.2 kw system would never be able to charge two Powerwalls even if all the energy produced went into the batteries. Smacks of dishonesty and/or incompetence.
so why dont builders build a house with roof shaped to take tesla tiles the best way ?
Because in 1949 (when the house was built) they failed to predict that I would want some Tesla tiles :)
Where are the following episodes?
Did you get roof???
Did you get the roof?
more = better :-D
We need solar sod.
👍
why no roof?=
Please log all expenses, not what you want to reveal.
Which way is north in relation to the roof.
top right corner of the screen (on the sketch)
You have to watch those contracts. The power company will screw you over.
If i put power back into the grid i will be paid for it.
Hi Sven, I just wanted to tell you that we are neighbors (I could tell right away by the trees where you were at). Any chance you and I can compare notes? Ps:. I also knew you were very close to me because of our electricity rates. I was thinking of getting solar, but I also need a new roof. If I do get a solar roof I would be more than happy to give you the referral as well.
Pss:. I live about 7 blocks away from you. I can do by. I will also tell you what you need to remove from your videos to not pinpoint your location.
I've watched your later videos before this. So far I am not impressed with how Tesla handled your project. In this you mentioned they could not increase the kVA then after the city rejected your permit they suddenly could. Then when they had to install wod panels they raped your with a charge even though they knew from the beginning that the panels would be needed. Maybe it was just their contractor but very suspicious.
You mean 5800 back in your own tax money you’ve payed them
I’m early. Yay
Biggest rip off . Sunpower is the best solar system in the world .
Looks good but I wouldnt want it on my roof. For at least 10 years to allow testing.. call CRsolar in Texas if your looking for more affordable solutions to exceed many tesla solar ideas.. many manufacturers around the world have better solutions. That are proven with better warranties I bet. Plus why not install a proven roof product also.
Cause these look great and make the house look amazing, unlike the awful looking old style panel, tacky.
@@leebruce9668 yes agree they do look a little better, But you can have them and I pray all hoA s dont become to picky making more rules to cater to 1 company with really an unproven product, i will put my good looking proven panels on my home . But in 10 years I may see how your fancy roof tiles are doing and use them one day so yes please do test them As yes they look better.
he needed to change the tiles as well thats why he just went with Tesla
