  • In this video, I show how to make the very simple but very attractive kasane rindō pattern.
    The saw I use in the video, and the one I strongly recommend for all kumiko work is the Nakaya EAKS D210C crosscut dozuki saw. An excellent saw with perfect balance.
    The timber I use is hoop pine.

    Hi Hajime Mashita, Des san!.... I’ve just found your channel.....amazing... as a woodworker I was stunned by an all Japan National Shioji Exhibition in Takamatsu on Shikoku, while hitch hiking in Japan in the 90’s. Your instruction on this subject was at that time very hard to access. I have made shioji in NZ and some lanterns and now in retirement have the time to revisit and re-hone some skills. Thanks for posting these, I will be investigating your other books and videos. The magic for me is also in applying the shioji paper, as yet I haven’t seen your instruction on this. Arigato goziamas Jimu...Ps my Nihon Go is a bit rusty!

    Des your back! Love the video as always. I've been making cabinets for a spell and am now back doing The Journey. Haven't gotten to this one yet. On the 4th family. Did you move to Japan or still down under? Glad your back at it.

      Hi Checkers. Good to see you're getting back into the kumiko work. Still in Australia, but provided all this bug nonsense settles down, we're hoping to make our permanent move to Japan around July next year (end of our tax year here). And with that, my kumiko journey will come to an end.
      Cheers

      That will be sad for me your kumiko retirement, but hopefully it's been a fun journey. Best of luck mate.

    Do you set your block plane up in any special way for trimming the pieces? Awesome work btw, looks amazing!

    • @kskdesign1
      @kskdesign1  Před 4 lety +1

      No, the block plane is set up as normal. Just a matter of setting the blade to make a heavier or lighter cut as necessary.

    Absolutely beautiful work. I’m about to order your books from Amazon and was wondering in the books is there a list of tools and jigs you’d need to do the work ?
    Many thanks Steve ( UK )

      Thanks Steve.
      Book 1 gives a list and photos of all the tools you'll need. All the jigs are explained with detailed dimensional drawings in the books as they're needed.
      Cheers.

    Sir, off-topic, I was looking at your video on making coasters and was wondering if a cork backing would be in order to prevent moisture getting onto the table surface? Thanks, stay safe Ralph

    • @kskdesign1
      @kskdesign1  Před 3 lety

      Hi Ralph. That's certainly possible, but I've never worried about it. It wouldn't be too difficult to attach a cork base to the bottom of the coaster, but unless the cork was a contrasting colour, the kumiko pattern may get lost against the cork colour.
      Cheers.

    I've searched the Internet and I'm trying to source ha ganna blades , i can make the dai myself, joiner of 35yrs, just getting serious about kumiko

  • @Ashe_Fenrir
    @Ashe_Fenrir Před 4 lety

    I’m sure you’ve covered it before but do you ever use the purpose built kumiko planes instead? I’ve found that they are incredibly difficult to source in the US.

    • @kskdesign1
      @kskdesign1  Před 4 lety +1

      I have the set of four Adam. I only use them when I make very small patterns. Other than that, they're not really necessary. They're very expensive, and very difficult to set up accurately, and to maintain that accuracy. In all my books and videos, I show how to make the patterns using just normal jigs. The kumiko planes (ha-ganna) don't make the pattern-making process any easier, just faster, and they enable you to work with much smaller pieces. Unless you're doing this full-time and making a lot of patterns, I really can't see the value for the amount of money that has to be spent to get them.
