Ted flies in a GROB G115 Tutor T1 | Spinning Sortie / Stall Alarm | 115 Sqn RAF Wittering

- Ted's first flight of 2022 and he starts his flying in the Grob G115 Tutor with 115 Squadron. Ted's flying career started off at the top with his famous flight with Flt Lt James Sainty with the Typhoon Display Team in the Eurofighter Typhoon and then flying with the world renowned Red Arrows.
Ted, However, wanted to try things from the start and let us ask our selves, how and what did these amazing pilots fly before they took control of such amazing aircraft?
Well, firstly the Red Arrows actually fly the very aircraft they would have been training in but let us go further back. There are many Universities that have air training schools, air cadets and other aircraft related sectors relying on the training. Let us take Sainty for example, he would have had to start somewhere. The very first aircraft (apart from a Glider) that today's pilots of the RAF for example would be a Grob G115 Tutor T1. Now, there are stations such as RAF Leeming and RAF Cranwell that fly the Tutor, but here we are at RAF Wittering.
Flying the Tutor T1 at RAF Wittering is 16 Squadron, 115 Squadron, various University Air Squadrons and flying schools. Ted gets booked in and is given his flight path and sortie. He is on a Spinning Sortie which you can see the briefing at 00:17 and you can pause to appreciate the intricacy of Ted spinning around. 115 Squadron train flying instructors for all three UK armed forces.
So Ted is flying with 115 Sqn, let's have a look at their history:
1917 - Formed at Catterick, Yorkshire.
1918 - Joined the Independent Force Squadron carrying out the first strategic bombing raids into Germany.
1950 - Began operating the B-29 Superfortress.
1958 - The Squadron operated as a radar calibration unit using a variety of RAF transport aircraft.
2008 - Became the Grob Tutor instructor training squadron.
2022 - First flight of Sqn Ldr Ted Coningsby
Flt Lt Andy Tagg departed on the 25th February 2022 in G-BYWH with Sqn Ldr Ted Coningsby.

Hehe, you can see I was so intrigued with all the dials and instruments on the Tutor and the stall alarm was fascinating, well, I hung on for dear life 😁😎 was a great experience and once again, will never forget.

Your minder needs to get you some flying glasses, either dark tint or yellow, that sun 🌞 must have been a but of a git..... either during the spin or its recovery, must have been a bit difficult to concentrate on your gauges with not only the stall alarm but all that dazzle of the glazing and no shades.... your minder dropped the ball this time.... I really hope that you remonstrated with him afterwards 🙃🙃🙂.......

Hi Nicholas, it was brilliant sortie and although I started my flying career right at the very top in a Eurofighter Typhoon, I felt it was important to show where it all begins for a pilot. I will see if I can get into a Hawk (or the Texan) at RAF Valley which would be the next stage.
Flying glasses do sound great so I will see what can be done but I’ve only got one ear so they will have to be specially modified.
The world needs a bit of a cheer so I do my best and try and bring what I normally do, a smile.

Hi Stephen, thank you so much. What a great start to my flying for 2022. I know I already started my flying experience way up the top with Sainty in the Typhoon, then had the wonderful experience flying with the Red Arrows in the Hawk T1, but it was time to show the start of the road for our RAF pilots, in the Grob Tutor T1.
I had another wonderful experience and was looked after by the Flt Lt of 115 Sqn. Oh the spinning experience and hearing the stall alarm was amazing. Wahhhayyy!
