Another fun thing about the series: Eve's mentor and Aoi's mentor (and father) are voiced by Char and Amuro's voice actors, so this is secretly also a Gundam series.

Seeing this show's success has really rekindled my desire to see a good anime about pool, or billiards in general. As a competitive player myself, I can think of ALL KINDS of ways to "anime" it up, from being set in a specialized school for it to having dynamic, changing tables to supersizing it! And with how many game modes there are in actual pool, there are an endless amount of twists you could throw into the game that I could see it as being tense, comical, or even deadly. The potential is about as boundless as the possible amount of different configurations a set of balls could be on a pool table.
Speaking of references, am I overthinking that "Eve Aleon" in the first golf tournament, apart from being a reference to the Aleon mafia family is also an Evangelion reference. Especially since Eve's full first name is Evangeline.
I started this from your original mention in the ones to watch. Thanks for the suggestion it's been an amazing ride. My favorite bit currently is now that Eve is in Japan she never bothered to learn her new name and pulls out her passport to read it each time she's asked her name. It really is the perfect anime.

I started watching this from the first episode because I thought: 'if anything can make golf interesting, it's anime.' Birdie Wing has vindicated that thought many times over to become my easy favourite of the season. And I completely agree with you on your scoring metric of how anime this show is. Even the secondary waifus/husbandos have enough going on that they are easily at least high-tier in other series. It's just that Eve and Aoi outshine even them. ...It's still wild to me that there is every possibility that this takes place in the same universe as Madlax. Hell, in many ways Eve is Madlax, just with golf instead of guns.

Geoff, you forgot to mention that Eve was trained by *Char Aznable* & Aoi was trained by *Amuro Ray* if you look at their seiyuus. Aside from the Gundam reference above, there's also Saint Seiya reference where *Reiya* *Amuro* is serving under *Athena* company (Reiya & Seiya's seiyuu is the same person 😉). Furthermore, if you actually followed the legendary *Captain Tsubasa* soccer manganime, Birdie Wing is actually replicating the age-old rivalry between the pure & well-raised genius (Aoi/Tsubasa Ozora) and the rough & thug-life ace (Eve/Kojiro Hyuga).
You didn't even mention the fasion outside of the catgirl avatar. As far as casual looks go, my favorite is the outfit Eve wears when she first goes to Japan, though I also SERIOUSLY dug that green athletic number during her brief training montage. Also if there was any doubt that Eve and Aoi's rivalry was meant to become romantic(where there wasn't any), it went out the door when Aoi tried to tackle-hug her, and then got the door slammed in its face when she peeked through her fingers at Eve's naked body. The only negative thing I can say about this anime is the fact that even though the OP slaps, I can't take it seriously. I KNOW they're saying "Venus line", I KNOW it's a golf term, and I'm fairly certain I know what it refers to, but every time I hear that song with it's heavy Engrish, all I can hear is "penis slide".
I did not expect this show to go so hard and suck me in so much. One of the best anime originals I've seen in a while. We need a 1-3 episode OVA to show us what happens in that post credit scene in the last episode.

I picked it up after your Best of Spring 2022 Video and got hooked on the sheer insanity of the show. It gradually increases the dosage making you much more amenable to the places it goes. First Eve propels a drive through a moving train, "okay this is anime." Then you get introduced to the golf mob, "considering the train I accept this." Then the transforming hole, then viper lady. By the time the slums were being demolished and Eve had to the death match I was willing to accept any plot development. They could have an arc featuring a lunar golf course and it wouldn't feel incongruous with the rest of the series.
One of the few shows I've seen where one episode does something wildly crazy... the next ep says "Hold my Gfuel".... and one ups it... then guess what the next ep does?
Listen MB I gave it a watch under your recommended "check out this season's anime" and thought okay I will give it the good old three-episode watch. To then be sucked in on the freaking roller coaster of a ride that this show puts you through. By far one of my favorite shows that I can't wait to force all my other friends to watch.

Housemate and I watched the first episode at the start of the season mainly to cross it off the to watch list, and were absolutely blown away by just how much this ridiculous show really is Peak Anime. We've watched it every week since and not once has there been a dud episode, if anything it just keeps getting better. It really has no business being this good and I'm so glad it is, absolutely one of the best of the season and maybe even the whole year.

Having seen the criminally low MAL score, I am so pleased to see this show that is so ridiculously stupid that it loops back around to being actually amazing get the attention it deserves. Probably the show I look forward to most each week, and that is in a season that includes Spy x Family and Kaguya-sama.

I started it hoping to laugh at the meme concept but was hooked on episode one. This season of anime has been filled with so many diamonds hiding in plain sight. Between this, Konming, and Bookworm being back I always have something to look forward to (aside from a few other pretty good shows).

Honestly, getting people to watch THAT moment is like those folks on Twitter who have just started watching Game of Thrones, and everyone is waiting for them to get to a certain episode that everyone who's already seen the show knows is coming and waits to see their reaction...
I also enjoyed the fact that the final dramatic twist is (spoiler) that one of the main characters is suffering from the incurable too-much-golf disease that is a literal disease literally from too much golf.
I feel like I wished this into existence. I was streaming Mario Golf one day and was talking about how much I would love an over the top Golf anime, and a week later Birdie Wing was announced. Been watching since episode 1 and I haven't regretted a single second. I have the biggest grin on my face seeing how much Geoff loves it too. This anime is everything I wanted and so much more.

As a lover of ridiculous sports anime, all I needed to see was Eve hitting a ball between moving train cars to know I was in for a good time, but I was woefully unprepared for how awesome this show actually is. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get my friend to watch it for weeks now, but I have finally managed it after telling him one of the dudes who made s-CRY-ed wrote it. Every time I learn something new about the people working on it, I am more and more convinced someone at Sunrise REALLY wants to out anime everyone else this year.

My old man (Santa Claus) and I are always cheering hooping and hollering over my old woman (Mrs. Claus) because SHE is a grand golfing champion! Granted, she has to change her appearance and alter her face through magic, but she IS at countless golfing tournaments around the world and she is a real serious pro at the end of the day! Not only that, but plenty of other female elves here at The North Pole are also happily playing that sport as well (when it's Summer and the snow has completely melted)! So with all of that said, all of Christmas Town is going to watch this anime or I will do my darn best to persuade them to watch it! I'll keep everyone updated!

Seeing this show's success has really rekindled my desire to see a good anime about pool, or billiards in general. As a competitive player myself, I can think of ALL KINDS of ways to "anime" it up, from being set in a specialized school for it to having dynamic, changing tables to supersizing it! And with how many game modes there are in actual pool, there are an endless amount of twists you could throw into the game that I could see it as being tense, comical, or even deadly. The potential is about as boundless as the possible amount of different configurations a set of balls could be on a pool table.

My favorite bit currently is now that Eve is in Japan she never bothered to learn her new name and pulls out her passport to read it each time she's asked her name. It really is the perfect anime.

I started watching this from the first episode because I thought: 'if anything can make golf interesting, it's anime.' Birdie Wing has vindicated that thought many times over to become my easy favourite of the season.
And I completely agree with you on your scoring metric of how anime this show is. Even the secondary waifus/husbandos have enough going on that they are easily at least high-tier in other series. It's just that Eve and Aoi outshine even them.
...It's still wild to me that there is every possibility that this takes place in the same universe as Madlax. Hell, in many ways Eve is Madlax, just with golf instead of guns.
I was trying to figure out how to spell Nafrece (the country where Eve and her orphan friends live at the start) and the first hit on Google is the Madlax wiki about Nafrece in Madlax (I know nothing else about Madlax other than what I read there), so yeah...
tbh it's rather easy to make things at least somewhat interesting just by having a bunch of cute waifus performing the activity. as great as this show is being so over the top I still think it'd be worth watching even if it was just normal golf like Sorairo Utility.

Aside from the Gundam reference above, there's also Saint Seiya reference where *Reiya* *Amuro* is serving under *Athena* company (Reiya & Seiya's seiyuu is the same person 😉).
Furthermore, if you actually followed the legendary *Captain Tsubasa* soccer manganime, Birdie Wing is actually replicating the age-old rivalry between the pure & well-raised genius (Aoi/Tsubasa Ozora) and the rough & thug-life ace (Eve/Kojiro Hyuga).

When I first saw Aoi with her Athena bag I was like wait is she the reincarnation of the goddess, so I got it slightly wrong.
You didn't even mention the fasion outside of the catgirl avatar. As far as casual looks go, my favorite is the outfit Eve wears when she first goes to Japan, though I also SERIOUSLY dug that green athletic number during her brief training montage.
Also if there was any doubt that Eve and Aoi's rivalry was meant to become romantic(where there wasn't any), it went out the door when Aoi tried to tackle-hug her, and then got the door slammed in its face when she peeked through her fingers at Eve's naked body.
The only negative thing I can say about this anime is the fact that even though the OP slaps, I can't take it seriously. I KNOW they're saying "Venus line", I KNOW it's a golf term, and I'm fairly certain I know what it refers to, but every time I hear that song with it's heavy Engrish, all I can hear is "penis slide".

I did not expect this show to go so hard and suck me in so much. One of the best anime originals I've seen in a while. We need a 1-3 episode OVA to show us what happens in that post credit scene in the last episode.

I was watching the vampire episode and was screaming at my TV, "She's just doing the Mai Valentine bullshit!!" BEFORE the big reveal
I picked it up after your Best of Spring 2022 Video and got hooked on the sheer insanity of the show. It gradually increases the dosage making you much more amenable to the places it goes. First Eve propels a drive through a moving train, "okay this is anime." Then you get introduced to the golf mob, "considering the train I accept this." Then the transforming hole, then viper lady. By the time the slums were being demolished and Eve had to the death match I was willing to accept any plot development. They could have an arc featuring a lunar golf course and it wouldn't feel incongruous with the rest of the series.
This show has been the platonic ideal of anime. Your video really does it justice.

Listen MB I gave it a watch under your recommended "check out this season's anime" and thought okay I will give it the good old three-episode watch. To then be sucked in on the freaking roller coaster of a ride that this show puts you through. By far one of my favorite shows that I can't wait to force all my other friends to watch.

"The arm" blew my mind. That's the most surprised I've been in a long time. Very glad I came across this video and then watched all of birdie wing. Being slept on for sure. This show is great.
Housemate and I watched the first episode at the start of the season mainly to cross it off the to watch list, and were absolutely blown away by just how much this ridiculous show really is Peak Anime. We've watched it every week since and not once has there been a dud episode, if anything it just keeps getting better. It really has no business being this good and I'm so glad it is, absolutely one of the best of the season and maybe even the whole year.

Having seen the criminally low MAL score, I am so pleased to see this show that is so ridiculously stupid that it loops back around to being actually amazing get the attention it deserves. Probably the show I look forward to most each week, and that is in a season that includes Spy x Family and Kaguya-sama.

I started it hoping to laugh at the meme concept but was hooked on episode one. This season of anime has been filled with so many diamonds hiding in plain sight. Between this, Konming, and Bookworm being back I always have something to look forward to (aside from a few other pretty good shows).

It's amazing how golf of all sports received one of the most anime anime I've seen. And as someone who's played golf, and likes it because playing golf is actually very fun vs playing it, so much of the stuff they pull in this series has made me scream in disbelief

I feel like I wished this into existence. I was streaming Mario Golf one day and was talking about how much I would love an over the top Golf anime, and a week later Birdie Wing was announced. Been watching since episode 1 and I haven't regretted a single second. I have the biggest grin on my face seeing how much Geoff loves it too. This anime is everything I wanted and so much more.

But as you said, this series hits on so many levels beyond that feel and I couldn't love it any more for it

As a lover of ridiculous sports anime, all I needed to see was Eve hitting a ball between moving train cars to know I was in for a good time, but I was woefully unprepared for how awesome this show actually is. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get my friend to watch it for weeks now, but I have finally managed it after telling him one of the dudes who made s-CRY-ed wrote it. Every time I learn something new about the people working on it, I am more and more convinced someone at Sunrise REALLY wants to out anime everyone else this year.
