We just got 4 California rabbits so I had to make a hutch and this is what I came up with, hope you all enjoy and any advice you have for me about raising rabbits would be great.
Great hutch.. love the design except most people add a "foot rest" for them. Basically a small piece of plywood somewhere in the cage where the rabbits can get off the hard cage. They can develop sores on their feet pretty easy..
When driving screws through sheet metal it’s a lot easier if you give your drill a good smack after you have the screw in contact with the metal. Starts the screw much faster! Great video!!
I've raised a lot of rabbits over the last 30 years I never had any luck with the 1/2 by 1/2 hardware cloth it always separated with the big meat rabbits hope you have better luck, I use the 1/2 by 1 inch 14 gauge flooring enjoyed the video new sub.
I know this is not a new video. But I came across your channel while watching Good Simple Living :) Thanks for sharing, I am beginning my journey into rabbits very soon. I hope I have half the success with my channel as you have with yours!
Sweet video. I will be building this spring and have been watching vds to get ideas or maybe even to calm my nerves lol. im very new to this and only have a quarter acre but rabbits seemed like a good fit and I heard that you say the rabbits a mostly new to you so im looking forward to your vids on them. lucky you to be outside in a T-shirt in January lol. I would build nw but VT is extremely cold and I have to buid an Enclosure then a few Hutches ad a couple of growout pens, id be frozen. glad to have found you. Have a great day and God Bless
Rick J heck ya bro it was nice that day, from what I have learned so fare is that rabbits are pretty easy to raise on the winter just make sure you water and feed them. I water then 2 times a day when the waterer is frozen.
Nice work on the rabbit hutch. It might be time to get some tin on the chicken house, that osb is only going to last so long in the weather, and now there will be more moisture pounding on the one side from the rabbit house. We all learn my watching others and then doing it ourselves. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for sharing this video!! We have 2 bucks that needs hutch like this with the divider!!! My husband will be using your video to build us this today!!!!!
Just found this video, I have been watching your newer videos and liked this one as I am looking at rabbits as meat source on my new homestead. Keep on keeping it Dutch!!
Just a couple quick questions, do you still have rabbits? Could the hutch be modified to raise quail? I have been watching your quail videos and am considering them as well as an egg and meat source. I do not have any room in a shed or garage and thought a hutch may work good What are your thoughts? Thank you so much for all good information!!
I really like the hutch. It looks very nice. My only question is wouldn't it be better to put some plywood down before the tin so the tin won't heat the cage up more in the summer time?
Glenokla Thanks, you know I personally don't think it will matter much bc I have all 4 sides open for ventilation and I plan on putting frozen water jugs in with them during the summer. But I could be wrong this is my first time raising rabbits. but my friend has the same roof setup and he has never had any issues. Thanks for watching and the question.
great looking rabbit hutch! I seen your momma dog run in the background, she's looking really good..was gonna ask if you still had any of the pups, or if you had found them all homes? Thanks
anita gasper yes she is doing awesome. we found them all homes. was going to keep one but decided we better get our fence up around the house first so we can have a 2nd dog stay outside to protect the homestead..thanks for watching the rabbit hutch build
Not sure exactly how big the holes are on the wire that you used for the floor but if they are too small the rabbit poo won't fall through and will get stuck there.
Your cage is perfectly large enough. I recommend using window screen under the bottom of your cage. Connect one end up high and allow the other end to be lower. This way you can collect your rabbit poop lol and use it in your garden. Best fertilizer ever!
Mine were siblings but when talen out of a big area and then evacuating i had to put them in a small area like yours mine immediately fought and mangled their siblings ear
Measurements??????? PLEASE Also, i know first hand from raising chickens, tin gets very hot. You need a air gap, and take some tree branches and cover the tin in the summer. This is what I do .
where do they sleep, get out of the weather , get a break from the wire bottom ? sorry but you forgot one of the elements of a hutch ! the Nesting Box!
The whole size of that is good for one rabbit. So you need 3 and closer to the ground that way you don't have to worry about the wind. And better meat rabbits are continental giant rabbits..why stand 4ft tall but you need a big cage for them and I mean big.
When I was a kid I used to go down the street for my home and visit with an old man who raised New Zealand white rabbits for meat. He claimed he could get more meat to eat in a year from any good breeding doe than raising beef cattle. His cages had a hardware cloth bottom and a nesting box. He rabbit poop would fall through the mesh into a sheetmetal bin below where he could mix it with top soil and then he would mix in some planting soil and add fishing worms which improved the soil for a nitrogen rich gardening soil. He would sell most of the meat, sell the gardening soil and the fishing worms.
I recommend using a water bowl for your rabbits. Because then they will be able to drink more water easier and also the mesh at the bottom is not good for your bunnies feet. They can get sores from the mesh. And one more thing i wanted to ask if the bunnies are staying in there all day long? Besides those 3 things their cage is wonderful.
I see this mistake all the time where they use 0.5 by 0.5 inch AKA chicken wire ...rabbits will chew through that with a breeze, then you have to redo . Some people never learn...
Essem Sween there are mixed reviews on that, I'm putting a nesting bix in them so they will have a place to get in off the wire if it does bother them.
Cookie Cat ive kept rabbits in wire floors for 9 years and never had a single issue with sore hocks amd you wont as long as there healthy rabbits andbyou have a small area for them to get off the wire and the wife is 10x more sanitary than a solid floor what actually is the main cause of a sore hock is the rabbit being on a solid wood floor in bedding thats covered in the urine and feces and that itself also leaves room for bacteria and diseases to grow n muliply rapidly due to there consistently being moisture in one concentrated area
Hi man I just recently found your channel and I’d like to tell you that bunnies aren’t meant to be housed outside. Rabbits are very delicate creatures and having them in a hutch isn’t good for them or their health. First of all predators can cause serious damage to the hutch, break in easily, or taunt your buns to the point of shock. The right place to house them is in a dog pen inside your house actually or have them be free roamed. By having them in a pen will make them much more happy and they will be able to hop, do zoomies, and binky. Having them outside is also very frowned upon and can cause aggression, anxiety, depression, sores on their paws, and weight gain. Please your buns deserve to have the best life possible and they aren’t gonna in a tiny hutch like that
@@lianarice Hahaha....Welcome to Homesteading! Livestock have a purpose on a homesteading farm. Once you watch a few more videos let me know if you figure out what "freezer camp" is!!!
@Keeping It Dutch If you want rabbit meat just hunt. Rabbits are very shy creatures and aren’t supposed to be cooped up in a hutch with each other living in their own filth. By raising rabbits this way they are in constant fear from predators, weather, boredom, and lack of exercise. They’re loving creatures that should be able to interact with you and live in your house just like a cat or dog. Please stop this cruel act and just hunt for wild rabbits instead of raising animals and make them be in constant fear of everything.
this hutch is far too small and the rabbits have no where to hide/sleep !! Also the wire floors can give the rabbits leg sores! the hutch isnt even big enough for one rabbit never mind all them, you need to google requirements! Once there food, drink and toys in there, there is going to be no room
Just awful. Way too small.. rabbits need to jump and hop and stretch up. They need as much freedom as a cat or dog. They will go stir crazy and aggressive in here cos they can't move. There is no protection from rain, cold and predators. It's just dam right awful and cruel!!!

Beautiful buns! Cage should definitely be larger though. Thanks for the video

I built mine almost the same. Looks good.
Question,,,,how did you attach the 2 by's to each other to make a door? Did you have to Screw at an Angle to attach them? Thank you .
Nice hutch! Simple is usually best.
Nice job on your rabbit hutch. Really nice looking rabbits do you have there too! They are big and healthy looking👍👍👍
MAE HAY I have 3 does in the video, I have the buck in a different house. I didn't show him. thanks for watching.
u gave me some good ideas...thanks
Nice video, thank you! What angle are the side rails cut to?
U can use the poop for plants plus u dont need to compost it if you dont need it u can sell it
Thanks for the idea i will keep it in mind ! :)
Good look'n hutch Dutch ! 10

Okie Farmer hahaha for sure
Nice hutch bro, nice chicken coop too.
+Roman Brown thanks a lot
Nice!
Wow that's good
Nice video...What's the size of the wood? 4×2's? And why is one of the rabbits separated from the rest?
Kim we only keep 2 of the does, so now each rabbit has her own apartment.
What size lumber did you use
Any chance you could share your dimensions? lol Im looking to build something like this except I dont have much building experience!

You're a brilliant, logical DIYer. Not so great handling the bunnies tho lol you need one hand under their butt for support just fyi :)
Let's pretend we didn't split the shit out of that wood lmao love ur hutch tho
nice job! do you need to be concerned about keeping them warm??
denise harris yes I'm going to winterize it tonight, the Temps here are in the 60s now but we got cold front coming in tomorrow. thanks for watching

Nice hutch. I used to raise them for a guy who sold some at a trade day and he ate some also. I'm thinking of getting back into it.

It that tin roof not going to be really loud if it rains
👌👌👌
About how much did this cost to build?
+MarieGaming -Minecraft less then $75
Nice and good simple hutch but what if rain or cold ? How can we provide any small champer connected with it? 😓
where do they sleep, get out of the weather , get a break from the wire bottom ? sorry but you forgot one of the elements of a hutch ! the Nesting Box!

Miranda Stafford this worked great for my rabbits, plenty of room.
Keeping It Dutch plenty of room?? I think not
Do you have a blue print!
Aye Time no sorry, I just came up with it in my head.
Well it's been a few years how did it go? It does look like they need more protection from sun and wind
And they need something other that wire for there feet and its too small for 3 bunnies
Hey that's a great looking hutch...what size wire did you use? I'm gonna have to build one soon...
Teal House Farm 1/2. I think that is what everyone uses. When are you guys going to get rabbits? these are our first ones
Homesteading With Dutch we'll probably get them whenever I get around to building a hutch...😬...so the pressures on!

Real hard to tell but judging from the amount of brown on the nose I'd say Californians.
Nice hutch Dutch.
Okie Farmer thank you
Won't the wire floor hurt their little paws?
Essem Sween there are mixed reviews on that, I'm putting a nesting bix in them so they will have a place to get in off the wire if it does bother them.

@@DjehutimasAsarRa yes it will
Needs more coverage the wind will make them sick :(
They need a place to stay worm and sleep in the winter
Rabbits fur is made for the winter!! Give them some hay and they will be just fine!
Nice work man, u should consider doing a video without putting any animals in the cage next time to avoid animal police comments
I very strongly agree with you
Needs some hot/cold weather protection. Small enclosed area.
Why that only took a few minutes Dutch you are especially fast with the wire snippers.😛
Like the hutch Dutch
It looks great but too small for all those gorgeous bunnies!! But then you said raising bunnies up and butchering them for their meat O.O :'(
Pls be careful how u held that first bun their backs break easily...they can break their own backs squirming...
Hm these rabbits love the wire ground :-/
Cem Özdemier hm they have a soft floor now bub
Hopefully they have.. and hopefully the hutch was only a solution for a small period of time. But nice skills
Cem Özdemier no the hutch is their home long term.
It went from sawing the first board to being halfway built, not helpful :/

It is??

hate the fucking wire hutches.. it hurts.. people should try walking on those wires for 1-2 days before putting speechless animals..
Not how you hold and carry bunnies. Good hutch though. Forget meat. Go vegan.
