  • In this video, we wanted to show you some of the problems we encountered with the wooden style rabbit hutches and why we transitioned to the wire cages that we recently built. Also, we want to show you how we have our wire cages setup, and give you a little glimpse into our future plans with our rabbitry! Thank you for watching!

Hey from central Michigan ! We have raised meat rabbits for about 10 years . The wire cages are far superior to anything else you can use. They clean and sanitize with no problem . Hose down , scrub with dish soap and a brush, spray with alcohol to sanitize and hose down to rinse and dry in the sun . No moldy , smelly wood . No problems with bacterial issues, ammonia build up or mites . The rabbits have alot of fresh air which they need for good health . We use draft shields like metal or wood , sometimes even heavy cardboard. Keep em dry and out of the wind (drafts) and everybody is happy.🐇 Great job and content as usual 👍 . Really enjoy your channel. Keep on keep'n on . Happy homesteading 🌞

As always, want to thank you for your service, Sir. After multiple tries on breeding...both does finally had kits...5 from one, 7 from other...unfortunately, the doe with 5, we lost all the kits...went down to 24 and even tho we had tarps around a heat lamp and small heater...temps still were are 32 freezing...we think the kits were still latched to doe and she went to get out and they were scattered...inside nest box ( ours is permanently attached on side), but not huddled up and out of the fur...was heart broken...the other doe still has 7 alive and praying we make it with them..it's been a journey for sure...

    Hi
Vic here, Penny's asleep and I like to use her phone.
5:52 "And when it gets really really cold"
Sir, you folks in OK don't know what cold is. We live in northern Minnesota (less than 10 miles to the Canadian border) and let me tell you, cold is February up here.
Sustained temps of -30° in the day time and down to -48° and colder at night . . . for two - three weeks straight.
    THAT'S COLD !
12:53 Have you considered a slide in/out concept here instead of physically "popping" the floor boards ?
I once built a Degu "Condo" for my degu named "Buddy". The slide in tray worked really nice in my situation. I could clean the entire cage floor thoroughly without disturbing my critter at all.
You two are doing a great job.
    I'm a new subscriber.
Thanks for the great ideas, like the raised bed construction and the hugelkultur method. I'm going to do some research on this. :)

Oh forgot to mention , we got almost all our wire for the cages from a friend of a neighbor who used to raise fox. These huge cages were just sitting empty and he really wanted them gone .(free!) My husband took them apart and reconfigured them for our rabbits. You can find alot of materials to repurpose if you look hard enough and talk with folks. 👍 Craig's list and classified ads in the newspaper are also good sources. Take care everybody!

A trap door with hinges on the bottom of the permanent nest boxes might remedy the poop build up problem. Make it so that you can unlatch it and let it fall out then latch it back. It might take an extra 20 seconds per cage but, could save you a lot of repairs and would be fairly simple. You would want to make sure to do it in a way that it wouldn't cause a large draft but, it could be done. That is ofcourse if you plan ahead and build it into the design.

May I suggest on the "feet off the floor" thing, put in a piece of tile. It's also good for them to cool off, laying down on it. If you put it under the water and the occasional drip happens, it's a win-win situation - will help keep the tile slightly damp when they lay down on it. Most of my adult does lay down under the hanging waterer and let it drip down on their face! I'm custom building my own cages. Two rolls of 1/2X1 inch wire, 30 inches by 10 feet. It's enough to make a 60 inch cage, divided into 20X30, and it's 14 inches high. So you cut one piece down the middle (lose 2 inches each side) to make it 14 inches high. The rolls are about $25 apiece and that means I made a 3 hole cage for about $50! Not including J-Clips. Also get some thin sheet metal and make "sleeves" to extend the feeder up to the top of the cage - you can pour in feed from the top. I have my feeders on the INSIDE and NEVER cut holes in the side of the cage! Only for a door.

First of all thank you for your service young man God bless you!. I would have to agree the wooden cages are cumbersome and also the wood will absorb the urine and rabbit poop which can lead to bacterial infections growing because it doesn't dry out and that can cause issues with the rabbits and their babies. Have you thought about using PVC pipping as frame work for different cages frame work? they would be easy to clean as well, the wire cages you built look really good and are very practicle. God bless you both.

I prefer solid bottomed cages with lino and a short handled squeegee. Have the bottom of the doors set to the floor and it only takes a minute to remove any mess. Pine Shavings where they like to go will ensure they don't get wet rumps from their urine.

If you will go to Jnull0's channel, they make cages out of the coated white shelf making materials. It started with a closet organizer and grew from there. You will want to start with Mary's first cage build. She raises show rabbits for sale, as well as, has rabbits she takes to shows.

    • @SawyerRidgeFarm
      @SawyerRidgeFarm  Před 4 lety +1

That’s kind of tough to answer because it would depend largely on how often y’all ate rabbit. Our does can have anywhere from 7-10 kits per litter. Their gestation is 31 days. So they could almost be having that many every 31 days. Now, I wouldn’t recommend back to back breedings like that. I’d say a good number to start out with would be maybe 2-3 does and 1 buck. You’d be surprised how much meat you get with just that.

The ones indoors who free roam!
Rabbits should not live outside. It's a living being!
It needs care and you are the only one who can give them that! They need space to run around!
If you treat them right you know they aren't pets... But family who needs love and care
    This is NOT propper care

LaPorte Indiana 4-H rabbit club has a restaurant they run at fair time. All of the meat is rabbit. They serve three different meals a day. They are run by the kids and the families. They work in the restaurant and earn rabbit bucks. It’s bunny money that can only be used at their restaurant. So you work and earn money to buy your breakfast lunch or dinner. That helps the family save money on food fair week. The restaurant buys the rabbit culls from the kids all year long. The families butcher the rabbits and process the meat. Some meat is made into sausage for biscuits and gravy. Some is ready to go for rabbit and noodles. They also have rabbit nuggets. So many dishes they carry.
That restaurant has been a huge success to the club. The prices are the cheapest at the fair. A can of pop is only $ .50.
They have never raised their prices in many years.
Just wanted to share. You all have a wonderful holiday.
