China rolled out the red carpet for Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday with a welcome ceremony held just after the Russian leader’s arrival in Beijing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping greeted Putin as the latter stepped out of his trademark Russian-manufactured Aurus Senat limousine at the Great Hall of the People.
This is Putin's first foreign visit since he took oath for a six-year presidential term (Putin’s fifth) earlier this month.
Both leaders held bilateral talks and issued a joint statement on deepening China and Russia's comprehensive strategic partnership. A host of agreements on trade and infrastructure was also signed. Both countries had declared a 'no limits' partnership in February 2022 when Putin visited Beijing just days before the war in Ukraine began.
"China will always be a good neighbour, a good friend of mutual trust with Russia,” said Xi. We will continue to consolidate the friendship and work together to uphold equity and justice in the world, he added.
Moscow and Beijing have a great background of practical cooperation, remarked Putin. In 2023, bilateral trade grew by almost a quarter to reach $227 billion, he said.
China has strengthened trade and military ties with Russia in recent years as the United States and its allies imposed sanctions on both countries, particularly Moscow, for its military operation in Ukraine.
He also visited Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and laid a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of bilateral ties between Russia and China. And both Xi and Putin attended a musical gala to celebrate the occasion.
Putin announced the launch of the year of Russian and Chinese culture. "We will continue to act in unison for the successful development of the two countries, the prosperity of the two peoples, to increase the authority and influence of Russia and China in the world," he said.
And as Putin realised he had spoken too long without pausing for the translator, he said ‘excuse me’. “I felt very much at home, so thought everyone here understands Russian.”

China is constantly increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean and has also financed the development of ports in Pakistan.
Eight Hangor class submarines will be acquired, with four to be constructed in China and the remaining four at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) in Pakistan under transfer of technology (ToT).
Pakistan’s Gwadar port (part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in the BRI) can serve as a deep-water port with dual uses for commercial and military interests, as per GlobalData’s intelligence on the Chinese defence market.
My question ? is India just going to be a sitting duck, Why is India not going on the offensive mode to take care of its region.
    Jai Bharat,

The Chinese historical perspective of their neighbors is one of peace and cooperation. On the other hand, United States is used to control and hegemony. Very hard for these two to understand each other.
