I think most, if not all CZcamsrs plagerise in the beginning. They always take or steal ideas.
I mean, how many times you've watched a critique of a game and days later u get recomended another video on the same topic from another one?
My point is: this is how they start, they take inspiration, steal, copy paste content from multiple successful videos, and with time, over the years, I believe they truly develop they're own style and spin on the topics as they grow more confident.
While I don't always agree with his opinions, I think Luke Stephans today is a totally different person than what he was 6 years ago. And I do think he has strong independent opinions.

I didn't even use a voice recording app, I used the video app and filmed the darkness while I spoke.
Usually ANY voiceover work would be through my ZOOM H2N, but trying this out, the quality was good. I wouldn't use a phone to record lyrics for a song, but for basic voiceover? It doesn't sound bad to me. I sound clear enough, the white noise is very very quiet and the Bass-Treble range doesn't sound compressed.

@@MrSomnix it’s not an entry level set up, you can get a cheap audio interface from behringer for 50$ and a cheap better quality mic set up for 50$, which is about the same price as the blue yeti. Blue microphones definitely aren’t worth the value in 2022, they aren’t that good and overpriced, but they aren’t bad either. The set up they were talking about was no-means entry level, the sm7b is like a mic goal for me and a lot of my friends lol.

I actually can't stand the SM7, it just tends to sound congested to me. Is it just me, am i wrong? I would pick a $25 Superlux Pra any day. Added to the bad tone, SM7 is not exactly cheap (though the whole category of broadcast microphones has elevated prices; but an RE20 at least doesn't sound bad) and a little difficult to run with low output level. I think it's a massive viral disease that everyone is buying them.
Yeti is not very objectionable, but at best it's a slightly worse AT2020 with 3 extra modes which don't sound right. I think it was a little bit of a disease as well.

as a person who uses microphones on drumkits, vocals, acoustic guitars, pianos, i can say, with a certain (relatively low amount of) authority on the subject, the blue yeti is perfectly acceptable mic for its price. if you want to record for youtube, whether vocal audio or an acoustic instrument, the yeti is going to deliver, youtube is gonna compress the audio anyway. My only recommendation if your option is a Yeti is to look a little cheaper. Blue is basically the name brand for USB microphones, so they overcharge. Look at Samson or other brands that are cheaper but can deliver the same quality. DONT cheap out on a Blue Snowball or Blue Ice, those are actual dog trash. Using an XLR Mic is the next level. Either youve done youtube for a year or so and have the ability to upgrade, or youre looking to do more professional voice acting or recording for a band, thats when you take the leap towards an XLR connection.

Hey, nice video! Going to jump in real quick and give a quick defense of myself, if I may. A lot of what you said is right on, in that Macks greatly inspired a couple of videos that I made about a year or so ago. We share some similar tastes and styles, and I struggled as a creator to really take CZcams seriously until I saw several niche channels like his turning that style into awesome videos. In that sense, he was a great inspiration on a style that I adopted and began to riff on. However, I would disagree with the notion that I engaged in "plagiarism" as this video suggests. I haven't stolen a single frame of soulbro's work. My videos are original content, and my work is my own. We both cover vastly different subject matters... his channel services one corner of the internet, mine another... and I have never plagiarized his work (topics, analysis, footage, etc.) at all. So, I disagree that our situation with the KFC video I produced is anywhere near the same situation as your first and last examples. I mean, the two "similarity" clips you show here are quite a stretch to say the KFC video is a ripoff. I mean, the "alright check it out" thing I get... But if having structure in video essays where you address a topic point-by-point is stealing, by all means, lock me up, I guess.
For what it's worth, when I became aware that trolls were trying to stir up beef between us last year, I contacted Macks directly, and we talked through the situation one-on-one over the phone, as grown men do. He ran a spot for his comedy LP on a separate video of mine shortly thereafter, and we both have expressed interest in future collaborations, when a project I've had in the works reaches a point where he can be brought on in some capacity. As far as I'm aware, there's no problem between us. I continue to have great respect for him as an artist, and wish him continued success.
CZcams beef is one of the most absurd and childish things on the planet. I prefer collaboration. When engaged in petty drama, I waste time I could devote toward creating. I won't stop creating, and neither should you. Best of luck in your future works! Peace. ✌🏻

      @theoneandonlyjs19 Před 6 lety +256

austinmcconnell I definitely agree with this. Whenever you are a creative in whatever form that may take you are going to have inspirations. Breaking free of those inspirations completely is one of the most difficult things you encounter when going through that journey.
For example, when you are writing music - often it can feel like everything that you understand is coming directly from your own brain and thoughts is really just a picture puzzle of different *micro-inspirations* from creative works you enjoy - or even have come to see as the epitome of a particular ideal that emotionally or creatively impacted you in some way.
Of course that impact is inherently bound into the context of how you create after that because it occupies a certain space within your brain where the want and the drive to create to inspire that impact on other people that you felt yourself - comes from.
You can see how interlinked the two things can become. You can hardly blame someone for birthing their own styles on the foundations of their inspirations when they build the blocks of how you understand what is special about a creative medium in the first place.
As long as you don't obviously cross the line into recreation and aren't attempting to obviously profit from non-reworked, stolen ideas it would be crazy to say every creative work had to hide away from its influences.
I don't think your work does that at all, albeit it may take a few too many building blocks from a few other places but you mention that yourself.
I'm not sure that video really hits the very legitimate points that HBomber was really going for...

But even still it was so in-line with the decades long fanboy yawping of how special FROM game's were back then it struck me as utterly bland and unspecial of the time, and that was before knowing how thoroughly he plagiarized.
"Bloodborne was cool because no shields" This meme wasn't original, it was in people's heads since the first of the e3 trailers. It was passed around as shorthand for how much more hardcore it was going to be over Dark Souls or something.
Luke just took the ideas with mass appeal like that and ran with them, inserting his own vapid praise for the game between segments.
Hbmob uses it in his video as a jumping off point to how DS and BB informed gameplay differently.
In retrospect, it would be obvious where to draw the line between other''s takes and his own happy little anecdotes if for how detached they were from what he was actually talking about. He probably didn't have enough critical or editing know how to make a smoother transition between idea and just glued them together that way.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if his interest in games as mechanics exists solely to affect an air of someone who knows what he's talking about on the internet. I hear he's grown pretty toxic in recent years, but it's really kind of pathetic when you put it all in perspective.

There's a short story by BJ Novak, "J.C. Audetat, Translator of Don Quixote," where the protagonist is an obscure poet that catapults into fame after releasing an English translation of Don Quixote that's so well-received that it revitalizes worldwide interests in the classics.
Afterwards, he releases a new translation of classics like Anna Karenina and In Search of Lost Time and gets more and more recognition, which grows to such an absurd degree that he even releases a rewrite of 'The Great Gatsby', which is considered better than the original.
The joke at the end is that he doesn't know any language other than English and just rewrote other translations into a more poetic style, essentially ripping off other people's work by rewording it.

Just to add another layer to this... undoubtedly Novak himself was inspired by Jorge Luis Borges's "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote", itself a short story in the form of a fake litcrit article on the titular Menard, a 20th century French writer who "rewrites" fragments of Don Quixote line-by-line in the original Spanish. It's an interesting (and funny!) work re: authorship, reader context, and a work's "meaning" that's not *too* woefully tangential to the topic at hand.

Richard le Gallienne did something like this in real life. He was a member of the Omar Khayyam Club and published a 'Paraphrase from Several Literal Translations' of the Rubaiyat, as (despite knowing no Persian) he thought he was familiar enough with the spirit of the poem to make a better attempt than actual translators. Although really the impetus mostly stemmed from the bizarre views of the Omarians, who were inclined to discount any genius the original author(s) of the Rubaiyat may have possessed in favour of celebrating the original English translator, Edward FitzGerald. le Galliene said: 'the petals came from Persia, but it was an English magician who charmed them into a living rose'.

All of these accounts immediately remind me of Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov, easily my favourite author. The plot centres on a brilliant, deceased poet and his mad "friend" who parasitises him by analysing his last poem to be 100% about his own life.
It not only captures the essence of the sort of solipsism that would grow widespread on the internet many decades later, but does so in a mega-referential manner reminiscent of hypertext, making it feel like reading a wikipedia article despite predating wikipedia rather substantially.

I used to watch his videos but unsubscribed a year or so ago because at some point I just didn't feel like he had anything interesting or unique to say. Most of his opinions felt like they were just the already-dominant opinion on the subject.
This isn't true for literally every video, but it feels like he's extremely risk averse and doesn't want to present a challenging opinion to his audience at all.
Hearing that he will categorically steal entire original concepts really only adds to the sense that he wants to present himself as a thoughtful critic whilst taking as many shortcuts as possible to achieve that goal, either too lazy to think for himself or too cowardly to present an original argument or idea, or both.

It's a bit disheartening that some observations you make in this about CZcams trends and plagiarism of style, ideas, and content remain so relevant, but I'm also glad that you continue to bring attention to it now. I hope that some creators out there have actually taken these messages to heart and made an effort to improve. Even if they may do so simply because they now recognize the potential backlash they could receive if they continue shameless copying of others' work, it does open up the door for more original and inspired work, and might even result in some people finding their own voice when they otherwise might not have. This one instance of plagarism still bothers me, because i dont see anyone else mention this particular event:
This really old CZcams channel called "Tats TopGaming" or something like that made a video about Game-Breaking Glitches in games. Shortly thereafter, one of those generic, corporate "gamer" channels called "TGN" made an identical list about game-breaking bugs. The kicker is that TGN used the *_same_* bugs from the *_same_* games in the *_same_* order with the *_same_* footage and the *_same_* script. I'm not kidding, the similarities are so uncanny that no one could look at those two videos and say that TGN didn't straight up rip off Tats TopGaming's video. I'm also pretty sure that TGN knows this, because i had posted a comment on their video when it came out calling them out, and when i returned to that same video to look for my comment, it was mysteriously gone.

Hi, I’m commenting on a six year old video. Good to see you.
A lot of people might get paranoid about accidentally ripping someone off, and I’m here to alleviate your worries.
First off, good on you for caring about that in the first place.
Second off, genuine plagiarism is a very conscious act. It is not an accident nor cannot BE an accident. Even if two people create two very similar ideas in the same time range, it’d be obvious that no plagiarism happened because those ideas had an equal amount of care put into them.
Plagiarism is born out of ignorance and laziness, and you can see that in the quality of the plagiarist’s work. It’s sloppy, nonsensical at times, and boring, because they’re trying to copy a style that doesn’t suit them. Write down another’s unique thoughts they didn’t think. Mimic a mind that isn’t theirs.
There is a world of difference between quoting or getting inspired by someone. Notice how Hbomberguy notes repeated instances of the same video resembling his? Because that’s plagiarism. It’s not just one quote or one inspired line. It’s the conscious, repeated thievery of someone’s voice.
It’s akin to fraud, because they’re pretending to be someone they’re not. Someone who puts in the time and effort to make something of their own.
    You’re fine.

Wow, the pretentious claims from the "sound experts" are just killing me. I'm no expert myself, but after 10 years in hobby music production and recording and being a vocalist in a band, I can't help but laugh how things like Scarlett 214 and SHURE SM7B are considered "real professional audio setup". LOL - it's home\enthusiast broadcasting
ecording level. It's decent, but faaar from professional (although built on the similar\same platform).
Too many guys just looking for a mic setup to have this boring compressed, EQ-ed sound with a mic that has wide low-end just to get this deeper\darker tone from their voice, because a) it's what radio narrators did for a long time, b) it's supposed to give you more confident, more convincing (with a proper intonation) voice.
Both Yeti and your Shures are designed to do just that. And both are fucking fine for this purpose. Especially considering how this content is being consumed (and this is the most important consideration, really). 'Cos it your shitty ear pods\dr. dres\MacBook or other laptop speakers you'll just hear this - a lot of high end and a lot of bass with no original clarity of sound, nuances and "air". Phef, glad I got this out of my system :D Rant over.

I loved the Cloudlifter in the picture, necessary only because the "professional" rig included a preamp with insufficient gain.

ikr. not to mention that the sm7b is a podcaster mic iirc. it's built with talking in mind, so yeah. no fcking wonder it sounds better than an all-round ~$100 mic lmao

What would you recommend that's got a flatter sound profile in the amateur price range?
