- In today's vlog we're sharing how to defrost a RV refrigerator. Instead of using a hair dryer we like to turn the power off for a couple hours and that make the coils a lot easier to clean off.

I sure liked your recommendation better than a different video!
My aunt (she just turned 80) taught me how to defrost a manual defrost refrigerator/freezer when I was little. She had a cooler, wrapped all her frozen stuff in newspaper, put in cooler and then put a casserole pan in the freezer compartment - and filled almost to the top with boiling water. Close the door and then check back later - either it was all melted or she would remove what thawed and refill pan with more boiling water and repeat process. No damage with accidental melting/warping of plastic with hair dryer. We would play a game of cards while waiting for the defrosting! Card games - another lost art!
In my RV is a Norcold refrigerator and I follow a similar approach. I heat a tank of hot water, 10gal in my rv, then I have a plastic dish washing size container. I fill it with the hot water, place it in the freezer bottom and come back in 10-15 minutes. I use a plastic putty knife and many times the ice pops off because the sides of the fridge get warm first. A couple nights ago I heard this loud pop, I opened the freezer and my can of root beer blew up. I'll defrost it in the morning. I've been busy.
Water picks help get things defrosted in tight places
Just defrosted our Norcold also, I use a blowdryer and it takes about 15-20 minutes. I take everything out and put it in a cooler because I deep clean the fridge when I defrost so it takes a little while to get cold again.
I have just a small Dometic fridge in my RV and i find I have to defrost maybe every 3-4 weeks while travelling. I also just take everything out ... leave the door open and it generally quick and easy. I don't carry a lot of food since I eat out a lot ... too much actually ... but it is what it is. :)
That do-hockey thing in the back is a thermistor. At it's age is probably bad. You can buy a new one and it is just plug and play from there. You will see where the wire un-hooks and just plug the new one in. As I remember they are less than $20.00. The freezer should not freeze over that bad either. There should also be a drain hose in the back so that water will run out. They get brittle over time and many just fall off. Open your bay on the outside and you should see a white hose coming down. If not it is probably broken off. Hope this helps you a little. There is very little in there that can not be replaced easily.
The chores will keep you busy. Thanks for the sharing the RV maintenence stuff.
We have very similar methods. Thanks for sharing.
I just used a hair dryer.
Thank you. I so needed to know this.
Ben ...... Terrific vid on how to❗️ Hope you find plenty to do while Rebecca is away and you don't get too lonely for one another❣️ Tell Rebecca I said hello❗️ Wendy🌷
Household chores! We boil water and set it on shelf. it softens the ice for easy removal.
great video, love the how to/maintenance videos, thanks. we are just starting out, retired last month, we're currently in alabama, what a beautiful state. how often do you have to do this defrost cycle?
One of those things while on the road ;-)
Use a hairdryer and a beach towel: 20 minutes Done.
I guess it's just par for the course with RV refrigerators and freezers, then. I just defrosted both a few months ago and now it's back to the point of iceberg city and temps flirting with the mid to upper 40's. Time to clean it up again. Is there a way to pull that blasted plastic condensation catcher out? It appears to be stuck into the wall somehow and I don't want to break anything. Ykwim? That triangular trough in the fridge beneath the blades? Thanks.
I leave mine on empty freezer and stick a fan in there and 30 minutes its frost free with a towel to soak up the water!
No hairdryer available? Or no power? Heat up water in a pot till it boils, place the pot in the freezer, wait, wait, wait....works as well. :)
Got a problem. I have defrosted my fridge about 4 times since moving into it a year ago, but this time I watched your video to see if I could do it a faster way. Long story short, it's not working now. Well, what I mean is that everything acts like it's working. No error alarms are going off, but the temperature just isn't coming back down. I don't know what could be wrong. The light comes on when I open the door, the alarm beeps if the door is open past the 2 minutes, everything is working in the digital display. There are no loose wires associated with the cold sensor on the metal fin or anything under the dome cover. Please help me figure this out. I took it off "auto ac" and just put it on "ac" to see if that changes anything. The stuff in the freezer is now getting softish. I hope you can get back to me with some ideas before I have a stroke. Thank you. Anyone! Anyone at all. Thank you.
Is your microwave original or did you replace with a newer one? Sorry, doesn't pertain to the fridge but I seen it behind you and so I wondered.
Actually I heard you will likely damage your freezer this way there must be a better technique
DO NOT use hot water or a hair dryer. please refer to manual and do not listen to anyone here on CZcams. extremely ignorant and horrible advise. you will ruin your electronics if you use direct heat anywhere in the fridge or freezer.
The manual is available as a PDF online if you've lost yours. I was cringing watching him bend the crap of the fins. DO NOT DO WHAT HE IS HE IS DOING IN THE VIDEO, you are going to damage your fridge!! Just use common sense: 1) Turn it off 2) Remove food and put in ice chest. 3) Put towels/pans inside to soak up water 4) WAIT a while. 5) Clean 6) Replace food 7) Turn it on
You can put pans or containers of WARM not boiling water inside to speed up the process.
We take out food and put into an ice chest. Turn off and open doors. Clean fridge and mop up water.
