  • In today's episode Brian walks you through how we defrost our RV fridge. There are a lot of "no tool", "secret trick", and "no heat" tutorials out there and, while we're sure some of those work just fine, this is the method that we like to use. It's fast, it's easy, and it's actually pretty fun!

    Thank you.
    I noticed my fridge wasn't cooling as it normally does a week ago. Today I noticed the ice. Searched on CZcams how to fix the ice issue and I learned from your video. I did it.
    Thank you again.

      There's really nothing to it. As long as you can relocate your food for a little while and don't mind sitting uncomfortably for about 15 minutes, you're good to go! 👍😜👍

    My plan is to put a shallow tray under the fins(ours is a dometic 8 cu ft ) and pour warm water over the coils to melt the frost. Ours doesn't get to bad as we don't go on long trips.(9 days max but after about 5 days the temp starts creppinghing up over time. I don't want to take all the food out, just whats on the top shelf and hopefully be done in 10 minutes or less. Thanks for posting.

    Where I used to live, a casita, I would put a hot plate in the freezer on low and it would melt in 10 min. It would come out in big chunks. FYI it was out of the way of any water. You are correct. The unit cools the fins from right to left. I don't know if it will help or not. I was having cooling problems in the fridge, so I bought 12v cooling fans that connect to the cooling fins. I wired it into the light, before the door switch.

    Hi is it your thermistor settings is in the middle?our fridge is not cooling like it was before 34-36 temp.setting is 3. now mostly it is on 40's even i put it on temp.setting to highest number 5, no ice buildup. I just noticed your thermistor is in the middle,our is on the furthest back,im wondering if we accidentally move it thats why it is starting to not cool like it was before.Thank you!

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před rokem

      The temperature sensors in this video are from a 3-probe weather station. We kept one in the freezer, one in the fridge, put one outside, and the base read temperature at it's location too so we knew all sorts of info. It doesn't use wifi.

      From my research i havent found a setting. People get fans and hook them up on the fins which stops it. Im just gonna go ahead and do this trick of hairdrying and get a good deep clean of fridge too.

  • @joecarolynowen8617
    @joecarolynowen8617 Před 4 lety +1

    Nice video, but I think many of the Norcold refers have a defrost cycle that automatically cycles every 48 hours or so. I know that is for the refer section of ours, but the freezer is on its own to get defrosted.

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před 4 lety

      That's handy! Are the Norcolds propane/electric or just electric? A lot of the motorhomes we've been looking at have residential fridges so we won't have to go through this process any more.

      @@MagicNomadic Agreed! I have the same RV Dometic RM1350 and live in south Louisiana and mine doesn't do that, the defrost cycle is every 48 hours that should prevent this from happening. Thanks

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před 4 lety

      I would just leave the sensor where the manufacturer places it. Some models move the sensor as a way of adjusting the temperature in the fridge though, which is kind of clever.

  • @LisaScharin
    @LisaScharin Před 4 lety +1

    How do you prevent this from happening in the first place?

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před 4 lety

      There's really no way to prevent this from happening because of the way the cooling fins are exposed to ambient humidity rather than hidden like in a residential fridge. It all depends on how humid it is where you're camping too - we didn't get any frost like this in the SW but it happened really quickly back east where it's humid all year long.

    I did this today. It was a mess. Where does the melting water goes?

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před 4 lety

      There should be a little plastic "drip pan" under the fins that routes the water out through a drain tube on the outside of your RV. Without that, I imagine it would be a lot of towels!

    If you have ice in your refrigerator, doesn't that mean it's too cold? It should be between 35 - 40F. Ice should not be forming at all.

    • @Five2Go
      @Five2Go  Před 5 lety +1

      It does operate in that temperature range, but to get the air temperature there those fins have to be colder than that. Ice buildup in RV fridges is super common and basically unavoidable except in very dry areas.

    • @axleman27
      @axleman27 Před 5 lety +1

      @@Five2Go It should be very avoidable. Compressor type refrigerators and AC systems do not ice up as long as there is adequate airflow through the evaporator coil. I put two thermometers in my RV fridge last night. The one on the top shelf by the evap fins reads 27F while the one on the bottom shelf shows 37F. Warmer air should rise, but it does not appear to be doing so quickly enough to avoid this large differential. My fridge is empty, so I can only imagine it gets much worse when there are a lot of items in it further restricting the airflow around the fins. I think a fan or fans inside the fridge to keep air moving around the fins would likely prevent the large temp difference and most likely solve the icing issue.

  • @iair-conditiontheoutsideai3076

    The ice is actually a result of the ammonia evaporating off of the fins creating an extremely cooling effect causing the ice over time it builds up because it's an absorption refrigerator
