İstanbul Başakşehir have just won the Turkish Süper Lig (2019/20) for the first time in their history, only the second time a team outside of the Turkish “Big Three” have done so.
An underdog story for the romantics. But as James Montague finds out this club MIGHT have some strong political influence.
Is İstanbul Başakşehir President Erdogan's club?

One thing every turkish fan hates in Turkey: Don't mix politics with the game
how can you not mix politics when erdogan is involved?
@Fighton Daka Hakan Şükür was a great football player. There is no player as versatile as he is in today's football; in addition to his dominance in air balls, he could overtake his opponents by dribbling and likes to storm the wings. But with all these, because of his political stance he was always a disappointment. As a successful football player, he accepted to be the garniture on the unsavory meal of political Islamist groups which they used him as only a puppet. Nowadays, he has chosen one of those two political Islamist poles over the other, so
the disappointment caused by him does not seem to end anytime soon.
@lastmandanny What he means by “politics” is apparently the political interference to how things should be run in football. Plus, agree or not, that is perceived and accepted as a “military operation” against PKK, which has been listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union, not a war or attack against civilians. Players say they intend to support the army and commemorate soldiers who died, not “salute the attack”.
lastmandanny I agree with you, but let’s not pretend that in other countries (like the USA) the military is not present/advertised almost every sports game. It is no doubt political, but all conservative societies attempt to do this.
@lastmandanny You should be sure about nothing, particularly on cases that doesn’t happen where you live, unless you are an all-around expert. As an anti-war activist in Turkey I can say that nobody include those players hail the death of civilians, apart from few racists and ultranationalists who don’t hesitate saying that. Plus, majority of people are not aware nor believe civilians are dying, it’s both owing to how media depicts the events and the hatred against PKK which is perceived as liars and “child-killers” in average person mindset in Turkey. I am not argueing about what really happens in the zone because I don’t claim the knowledge of the truth. I try to stay neutral, even though my father as a normal civilian almost got killed and dozens of bright university students and civilians have killed in Ankara by PKK. I just want to say that those players and vast majority of the supporters of the operation against PKK don’t think civilians are get hurted and nobody would “salute” that kind of act, excluding few fascists.
The year before their promotion back to Süper Lig and their privatization, they build their stadium and their brand new facilities. Being a municipality club, their expenses were funded with taxpayer money. After this much investment and the risk paying off with finally good results in the field, they decide to privatize the team. Surely this doesn't have to be a bad thing if the municipality is well compensated for the club, right? But here's the thing. We still don't know the amount these businessman paid to acquire the club. We the taxpayers took the burden with financial expenses of this team and we probably didn't and won't get anything in return from their success. Other than seeing this ugly club taunting us with its mere existence. Nobody even cares enough to watch them in Champions League now.
Well atleast you didn't pay them businessmen extra pocket money for just establishing a team in Istanbul. Here in america we even beg them to come to our cities+tax cuts+cash for the owners.

@@shambhav9534 I’m Turkish myself and I can say that Erdoğan is using the club to make himself look like something that he is not. He deliberately funded a club that was struggling for his own political image. İstanbul Başakşehir was bought in 2014 by the AKP. They’re not respected by the Turkish fans because the “big signings they made” were all spoon fed by the governments money. You can’t be respected in a football passionate country when one of the biggest dictators in Turkish football is using the clubs to better his own image.

My political view is opposite of Erdogan but I can easily say that Basaksehir is the best managed team in last 3-4 years
Coming from a Göztepe fan :)
Yeah but imagine having no fans and no pressure, no debts and great facilities. Things could be much easier then :)
Are they really well managed? I won't compare başakşehir with the rest of the clubs but spending 4.5 million euros on Turan was not a good investment. They are wasting money like the big 3 but they somehow don't have any financial problems despite not having an income from fans.
They are good at finding players and since they don't have any fans they can give their youngsters a chance. But I think them being "well managed" is an illusion caused by their questionable income.
I feel like I now know mesut ozils next club.
Such a curious club. The video also misses off the oddity that the stadium is named after Fatih Terim; a man that has never managed Basaksehir, which is weird. And even weirder is that Fatih Terim manages their city rivals Galatasaray. To put that into perspective, it'd be like Manchester City naming the Emptihad Stadium 'the Sir Alex Ferguson stadium'.
They offered to change it on a few ocasions, but the name stood still.
@Stuart Penman yeah Ok grandpa, having a Scottish person on the name of an English stadium is the issue here isn't it. Christ you're either a massive xenophobe or you just don't get the analogy. There's no exact equivalent in English football to Terim being the name of a rival's stadium. It's a comparison. That's all it is. So get off your high horse you insufferable pedant.
@Ozan Kabak haha surely if I was a plastic I'd be supporting City now? Because City are the better team now. And if you understood English then you'd know that plastic fans are the fake ones that change their team.
And yeah I've never been old trafford. Like, I wasn't there when Rooney scored that overhead and the place erupted, was I? Or when Gerrard got sent off in an FA Cup tie and he had to walk off the pitch to 'Que sera sera' as thousands of us waved him goodbye... yeah that didn't happen did it, because you'd know. From your grotty flat in Turkey you know it all.
they are the 3rd team to win a title outside of the 3 Istanbul giants after Trabzonspor and Bursaspor
Basaksehir is the third club that won the Super Lig outside of top 3 after Trabzonspor and Bursaspor

Before Istanbul Municipality Sports Club became Başakşehir they also had no supporters and playing to the empty stands until an organic fan group formed by the Turkish Teenagers that organized in a Turkish humor website in social media called ''Inci Sozluk'' they start attending to the IMSC's matches, buying their merchs and later on named their fan group as ''Bozbaykuşlar'' aka ''Owls''
Each home match they were making humorous banners writing ''Please be quiet, we are working on our studies'' or one of the most famous one ''The controller is broken'' this group of teenagers quickly became famous and their numbers grow. Name of Bozbaykuşlar also started to get known by the other fan groups.
But after IMSC became Başakşehir, leaders of this group tried to talk with the new management to make their group official and get support from the administration to attend the matches and keep supporting the club even under the new name but the Başakşehir management literally ignored them and refusing to meet with their leaders. So to protest group stop attending to the matches and eventually dissolved but became a good joyful note in Turkish Football History.
After that Başakşehir continue playing to the empty stands which it reported that it made erdogan mad so he ordered his party to form the 1453.
1453 is not a ultras or organic fan group but just AKP youth who actually get paid by the party to attend the matches but still they not make a huge crowd in the stadium, that is why they are like a bad joke to the supporters of the other clubs and some of those supporters even calls them ''Paid watchers'' and jokes about the club and 1453 group.
Yeah, Başakşehir is funded by the government but still have a good administration but just like the Osmanlıspor (AKP's first project club try) Başakşehir also not liked by the other club supporters and still to this day seen as an insult to the Turkish Football.
As a football fan from Turkey I can say that yes they got serious help from the goverment. However we can't ignore the boards great business when it comes to transfers and managers. Is that true??they look brilliant and far better than any Turkish team i have seen.they actually beat Manchester United
@@OptimusDelta well thats the truth. Even tho they are a good team they can not normally win the league without any fans
Turkish football supporters respect what başakşehir played but we hate that team, 2019-2020 season başakşehir and Trabzonspor compete for trophy başakşehir's owner and chairman one of the leadest man in the AKP but Erdoğan's son in love and minister of internal affairs support and push Trabzonspor so in Turkey big 3 team kicked out by the government and partners. They want to politization football like everything else.
Brilliant content with an all-around view. As an Istanbulite with an interest in politics and football, I have something more to add.
Başakşehir has built state of the art training and youth facilities via Istanbul Municipality under AKP rule, with no expenses at all. Mahmut Tekdemir, Turkish international, is the product of these facilities and has been a very influential player in the squad from lower divs until today. Furthermore, they have used more subtle ways to support the club. Allegedly, tenders in Istanbul had a conditionality for the winners - to donate Başakşehir FK. So with all these sponsors, donates and backing from the municipality (until 2019), they could afford having no fans. Besides, having no fans is a quite big advantage in Turkey, since %90 of football fans in Turkey are complete idiots with no patience, so there was no pressure for ex-manager Abdullah Avcı to build his system on the field so that Başakşehir is still the only club with a European/modern football style in Turkey.
But credits should be given of course, both for actions on and off the field. They are the only club who take decisions with rationale (but consider the private ownership effect, having no pressure from fans and state of the art facilities). They were competing for championship with those fringe players of other clubs few years ago. And on the contrary of some fans of big three claim, they don’t have any support from the referees nor Turkish Football Association. But at the end of the day, they are a club which should not even exist in professional leagues.
So just to clarify man utd lost to a team formed 6 years ago. We're truly shit.
I haven't heard anything funnier than Imam Beckenbauer looooooooooool
Just slapped United
The club Ozil should sign for.
He just did 😅
Does he reply ?
I think not....
He does but rarely
Good effort however , It would be better to say somethings about the "BaşakŞehir" the place itself, not long time ago, a "middle of nowhere" and now a haven for shady land acquisitions and the imaginery "Canal Istanbul" which is heavily protested against by the Istanbul people.
Make a video on new isl format where all teams will play in just 3 stadiums due to covid 19
Good video with good details, but i wanna add some point of wiew... 1st of all, I hate Erdoğan so i dont like that out goverment supports our clubs financaly,. But the thing is every football club is made to be a election propaganda , so every team has a big support from the goverment. 2nd is that with the “goverment money” they really invested well and bought some young talents and sold them for more.(which our clubs never does...) so they are really really well ran team, and they have no debt...(Our top 3 clubs have like 500 million $ debt, maybe even more. And because of the fact our currency is worth so much less then a dollar 1₺=8.5$(which is rising day by day) our clubs are in a deep shithole bc of retirement home transfers, which they are still doing) And our “big clubs “ doesnt even try to play in Europe , which Başakşehir tries to do... So in conclusion, they might be supported by goverment, but they really do well finance wise and results wise. So they are not bad in my eyes
