Making an Outlander 18th Century Inspired Costume (but not travelling back in time)

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
After I made my Outlander inspired knitted shawl, on a whim, I decided to make a matching outfit. One of the things I really liked about Outlander was how the costumes evoked the time period without being strictly historical (though a lot of historical research was put into the costuming and I think they did a great job!). I really liked the textures, the colour palette, and so I wanted to make an Outlander inspired costume. Thankfully, past Cat had an inkling, and so I was able to use a pattern from my stash, Simplicity 8161. I think it was a great pattern!
I used exclusively fabrics from stash, roughly 1.5 meters of green linen for the jacket (plus heavier linen for interlining and a light linen for lining), and about 2 meters of olive wool suiting for my petticoat. Overall, I was really pleased with this 'quick' project! The embroidered stomacher really adds something (other than time lol). Just gotta find an opportunity to wear it now!

That embroidery was so worth the time! It is beautiful and really brings the whole outfit together. And such a feat, only using stash materials :)
I agree! That embroidery pulls it together
The stomacher is gorgeous! Now all you need are a pair of matching outlander mitts to keep your hands warm! 😊
This is a great idea! 👀
Lauren from American Duchess gives added details on the blog of how to draft a peplum for this pattern as Simplicity wouldn’t add it to the sewing instructions due to costs. Love the colours. Xx
That's interesting. How did you find that out?
Here I am searching for Outlander sewing content and up pops your notification! Perfect timing. 😂
Great project for the autumnal time. This embroidery in particular is so beautiful! I admire your accuracy - and your patience 😊.
That jacket and skirt with the embroidered stomacher is absolutely beautiful! I'm glad that you went outside of your comfort zone to do something on a whim!
That embroidery is so pretty. Also the the lines of the jacket are just so clean.
Oh the embroidery was utterly beautiful - but then, so was the entire outfit. I love that you threw yourself into this project without the months of planning - I do appreciate thorough planning but I like that you went out of your comfort zone and plunged in 😊
OMG that stomacher! It makes the outfit so much more interesting and I can really see why they would have loved embroidered stomachers back in the day. It kind of looks like a patterned garment peeking out underneath but really it's just a small piece that is decorated.
I love it! The embroidery is amazing! You make me want to break back out my outlander pattern. I had made this before with a curtain. I absolutely love this pattern and I love seeing what others do with it. You did an amazing job.
The embroidery just pulls you back in . . I can relate. I don't like doing pleats or ruffles as a hem, I can do it, it's just so tedious. And every time I finish one, I swear, never again. . . only to think, "You know what would look really pretty on this skirt--" and again, I'm doing a pleat or a ruffle. Love the outfit!
THIS CAME OUT SO WELL ESPECIALLY THE STOMACHER I LOVE IT
The whole outfit is lovely, but that embroidery is perfection.
The embroidery totally finished out the look. It was fabulous.
Whim-sewing, I know that all too well... for anything that's bigger than... oh, say, the hat I made last year when my head was cold or the handwarmers I made last week because my steering wheel was cold and was making my carpal tunnel achy and it's not cold enough for gloves yet... I have to make myself a deal, I will not start a new project unless I finish a UFO and get something off the mending pile... and I did make a mockup of the hand warmer just to make sure I could fit my hand into it!! ...of course, then I made another pair (lined, this time) to match my purple plaid wool house robe for when it's cold...
Oh my, that embroidery is so beautiful I can't handle it 😍😍 The whole outfit is amazing, perfect for fall forest frolicking
absolutely stunning! the embroidery especially is so gorgeous
Me watching @Nerdy Knitting's video about knits in Outlander and here your video pops out, lol :D
You did an amazing job on the embroidery! It looks soooooo beautiful!
10:20 super relatable, it's hard to trust machine sewing for some reason lol
The stomacher is amazing. The ensemble is beautifully done. Well done.

A couple of things: I loved that you liked the shawl to look a bit forlorn! Ha! That embroidery is extraordinary, and made it so special! It’s a pretty fancy project for a whim, and just lovely.
"Even whims deserve mock-ups."
I assume you have merch coming with that one?!
Lovely whimsical project! I feel like unplanned project are some of my favorites especially when they are sourced from stach! I've just completed one of my own (knitting) and am so happy with the results.
I hope you get to enjoy your finished items as much as I do :)
That embroidery is stunning. You have quite the skill with a needle!
It’s all absolutely gorgeous, but that embroidery is divine! What a wonderful job you did.
The embroidery looks beautiful. It really adds to the outfit. I really enjoy the detail.
I'm here for any type of Outlander-related whims :D. Also hints how to tackle Outlander's 18 century "tops".
Love the jacket with the peplum, it's really flattering. Also low-key witchy. 😉
Cat, you're back in that cute little house! Ya! This outfit is gorgeous; the embroidery is to die for, and I just love thistles. Well done you, and the shawl is divine. I want to try everything on. Haha!
Have a great week,
xoxo's Sandie🤗
Stunning work again Cat! I think the metal eyelets that you covered in the linen thread was genius as the metal is stiffer & I think lasts better, longer than plain handsewn eyelets. I will be adopting that trick.
So wonderfully romantic. The embroidery adds beautifully to it. I'll have to try a petticoat/skirt like that. So simple. Thanks for the lovely video
so lovely! nothing better than watching your videos on a chilly day with a cozy blanket
Wow Cat…you never disappoint!! This is absolutely beautiful…love everything about it, especially the embroidery❣️
Beautiful! Your embroidery is gorgeous and just makes the whole outfit work! I almost wouldn’t want to wear the shawl over it!!
I apologize that my last comment (on your shawl video) made no sense. CZcams chose to deny me the ability to locate said comment and edit it after I inadvertently posted it while I was working out my thoughts. I was attempting to say that a lot of patterns marked “Intermediate” are really more “adventurous beginner” patterns, but occasionally you find a very advanced pattern marked incorrectly. It looks like you found one of the latter. Your shawl is BEAUTIFUL!! You’ve got some incredible talent!!
This turned out beautifully! And you look gorgeous in it, it really suites you. The embroidery is very beautiful, brings it all together.
Oh WOW ! Out standing workmanship !! Thanks for sharing ..
Gorgeous work! I am in awe of the embroidery and the sleeves! Thank you for sharing, even if you feel it was a bit chaotic - I loved it!
Absolutely gorgeous! That olive is such a good color for you. The embroidery is stunning! Go you!!
I love that this video is spontaneous. Not scrip or plan just follow the creative flow❤
It turned out soooo pretty! You did such an amazing job!
Everything turned out so lovely! The embroidery is stunning and add such flair to the outfit.
That turned out wonderful! Your embroidered stomacher is stunning!
Lovely. Loved the color green of the jacket, and the jacket is so dear on you. The embroidery piece made the outfit absolutely stunning. Took it over the top. For being a quicker project, it is one of my favs. And, it looks so good on you.
The embroidery is beautiful!!! Lovely outfit.
I really love your knitted shawl! Your outfit came out so beautifully, too!
I love that embroidery!
Perfect outfit for your shawl 😍 Your embroidery is beautiful ❤
It turned out so very lovely
That embroidery is so beautiful 😍😍 lovely!

It looks so good! That embroidery is amazing.
The embroidery is so beautiful!
Really lovely outfit. Love love love the stomacher
Oh! Well done! I have this pattern, I may try it, thank you!
Love the t-shirt, 8 have enjoyed a jug of ale at the Green Dragon in Hobbiton! Also love outlander
The embroidery is so pretty!
That is an awesome book! 😮 super pretty jacket as well
I love this! My husband proposed while playing “the wedding” song from outlander so I have a real soft spot for anything outlander!
Beautifully done. I could watch you hand sew the whole outfit. Lovely embroidery!
I used this pattern a few years ago but didn’t know how to make a full bust adjustment so it never fit right. I should try it again in the future. Thanks. I enjoyed it. ❤
Love it, and that stomacher is beautiful 😍
Impressive and beautiful. The skills! Thank you for the video.
It’s gorgeous! Love the embroidery too!
I'm currently doing a crochet version of Calire's Carolina shawl, to be for mu mum's Christmas present. It's turning out so nice I'm considering making myself one.
Where did you find the pattern you’re using? I can’t knit to save myself, but I can crochet fairly well! ❤
@@mayve42 it's here on CZcams, if you search for crochet Carolina shawl it will come up.
I love it especially the thistle embroidered stomacher❤
That is very nice. Neat and tidy.
So well fitted and the embroidery is stunning 😍 That is a great ensemble.
this is so good! I absolutely love the stomacher and the colour combo of jacket and stomacher is just delicious!
just gorgeous
Just fabulous!
Beautiful embroidery and project.
Turned out beautifully!
This is gorgeous!
That's beautiful!
I too have trust issues with my sewing machine!
So I just got this pattern for Christmas 😄 and I got it originally for that jacket but am going to make the whole thing! Thank you for showing me this pattern!
You do such wonderful work!
I love this. I thik it is my favourite of what you have done. Love the colours, loved the embroidery. I am now tempted to find that pattern and make my own. Unforttunately i don't have such lovely linen and wool in my stash.
Fantastic embroidery!
Very lovely 😊
Very pretty 😀
This is wonderful - probably my favourite of all your projects so far. The embroidered stomacher is 👌
This jacket looks like it could be a good opportunity to try out the English stitch technique (assembly and lining attachment/finish in one step) if you wanted to do it by hand.
For the reveal footage, I assume you were wearing stays. Were you also wearing any kind of hip padding? How was the whole ensemble in terms of comfort and freedom of movement?
Beautiful outfit, and the setting sure felt like the Highlands! Did you opt for a bum roll with the petticoat? It looks like the wool was standing out in a really nice bell shape!
🇨🇦😃 perfect!
I have this on my to do list. But I ran out of steel for the stays so waiting for the person I bought it from to get some in.
just a heads up, steel might be a bit too rigid for stays 😅 I'd recommend reed or plastic boning
@@Judoka26 I need steel for my big bust lmao found out hard way
@@simplybeingelle although every inch is covered in boning? 😅🤯 I feel sorry for your back 😪
@@Judoka26 actually it helps my back. If you have a properly fitted one it is fine. Because I fit them well it helps my back.
@@simplybeingelle of course, I wear my corset for the same reason 😊 My comment was on the times when you don't wear stays 😄
Excuse my ignorance, but are you able to explain what the point of having the pleats on the shoulder instead if cutting the fabric in a different way (with less fabric) to fit the arms eye?
👍👌👏

Can I wear that to work please?!? ❤
Sigh. I have the pattern, lots of appropriate fabric in my stash, and an empty schedule. Guess I get to start on a new project.
Very pretty 😀
