    The wedding gown is breathtaking. The work that went into it is mind-blowing. I wonder what will become of it. It couldn't be used in another series. There's no other dress like it on television.
    I miss Terry.

    You really outdid yourself. So much research, historical comparisons and in-depth analysis of costume patterns and textures... I don't even put half the effort into my school assignments that you put in a single video!!
    Coming back to the video, my favourite outfit is of course Claire's wedding dress, the beautiful silver fabric and those billowing sleeves are to die for. It doesn't quite capture in still photographs but in the show when the cloak was removed, you could see the movement and volume of the fall sleeves. However I have a question. What is that silver band around the neck that she wears, with the wedding dress?

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  Před 6 lety

      Thank you mimiofthemalfoys! I'm not sure what that band is --let me ask Liz to see if she knows. I thought that it looked like a ribbon made of sheer silk.

    Oh the wedding gown!! ❤❤❤...my absolute favorite from season 1!!!! I just don't think it was showcased as well as it could have been on the show, but oh well, we have pictures. Great job and, as always, can't wait for more!!

      Yes, this seems to be a constant issue. I liked that they did show her gown outside in good light with lots of closeups. One thing I've learned is that even with HD it's so hard to pick up all of the details.

    At 8:24 as someone who has spent over 40 years studying tartan and Highland Dress I have to point out that "weathered" tartans (as Lochcarron calls them) are anachronistic by two centuries. That colour-scheme was invented and introduced by the weaver D C Dalgliesh shortly after starting his firm in 1947. Dalgliesh dubbed the new colour-scheme "reproduction colours" due to the claim that the colours were based on a fragment dug up from the Culloden battlefield in 1946. A leading tartan expert doubts the fragment ever existed both because the colours are entirely unlike any known tartan from any previous period, and because Dalgliesh has not allowed anyone to examine the fragment. In short, the colour-scheme appears to have been designed purely for marketing purposes. By the 1970s Lochcarron had come out with their version of "reproduction colours" which they dubbed "weathered colours".

    thank you for all your meticulous research to produce these videos. too bad we could barely see the mica shimmer in the wedding dress. it belongs in a museum. the replica the fan made is incredible. the queen of sweden's gown reminds me of the red dress in season 2. the "and now this?" dress!

      Hi lovey dovey! Thanks for commenting. I'm taking a wee break and then I will look at season 2 costumes. Yes, the sillhoutte of the Swedish wedding gown and Claire's red dress are very close.

    28:45 The embroidery on Claire's stays look to be grape vines. I conclude this from seeing the clusters of round berries. But then the leaves are split leaves with maybe 5 or so divides per leaf, looking more like the leaves of woodruff, which makes me think of the poisonous forest floor plant 'baneberry', so I looked it up a bit.
    It might be bryony?? Not sure. Happily accepting feedback as I would like to try making those stays.

      Have you got a website too? I'd love to share it!!! I'm about to start watching your Reign critique as that's where my inspiration came from - funky costumes that are medieval (and now I've expanded to historical) inspired costumes. (my costumes are very much hacks - such as covering corsets rather than making them and using curtains etc as much as possible - any short cuts I can do, I do! - another reason I love your videos, you give the designer's tricks!) Thank you so, so much for responding and engaging with your viewers!

I don't have a wesbite, but I do have a facebook page, twitter account (the links are in the description) and a pinterest page. Not gonna lie, when I saw the notification for this video, I screamed internally. Would've screamed externally too, but it was nearly 3 am, and my dad needs his sleep.
    I'm enamored with this video. If I knew more that the very basics of sewing (which I'm steadily forgetting) and had enough money...and a sewing machine, I would happily recreate all these costumes.
    I'm so happy you loved my Laoghaire dress! Although thinking back on it, I'd probably shorten the peplum skirt a bit, and maybe divide it into panels; maybe that'll give her more youth.
    When I saw the gorgeous mostrosity of the Queen of Sweeden dress, the only thing that came to my mind was "If that woman was alone and fell backwards or forwards in that dress, she'd be so SCREWED!" Then of course, I exclaimed "DEAR GOD! That's gorgeous!"😍😍😍
    Anyway, I absolutely can't wait until you do the video for the Season 2 French dresses!!!! It's almost offensive how amazing they are!!!! Cause I can't ever have even one of them.😭😭😭
    Oh, and I think I saw the Leeloo's video for when she recreated the wedding dress. She did a damn good job!!!

    WOW!!! What a fascinating video. I have friends that graduated from FIDM, in L.A. I thought I learned a thing or two about sewing and costumes, etc. How wrong I was. I admire the people who design their own costumes. If I were to attempt anything like these costumes (not very likely) I'd have to buy a pattern from Folkwear (or one of Folkwear's UK outlets more likely). (I'm not affiliated with said company by the way, just that I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start drawing up any of these type of costumes from scratch). Thank you for your hard work in these videos.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  Před 6 lety

      Patricia O'Neill Hi Patricia! All of the cosplayers that I've interviewed have their own way of doing things. Some create patterns from scratch, others get patterns from Etsy and others use commercial patterns and alter them. If you ever want to try making something, you could start with something simple and work your way up!

  • @tinahamilton9058
    @tinahamilton9058 Před 3 lety

    That pinking was done with something that looked like chisels, with different design striking edges. A tailor or dressmaker would make repeated strikes on the edge being trimmed. I have a rare book on Queen Elizabeth's wardrobe where I think I can locate a picture. As for warmth, as a Civil War first person reenactor (Mary Livermore) I had a cold weather petticoat that was heavy red flannel with quilting for added warmth. It was great for Gettysburg memorials in November, and laying wreaths in the Lincoln Memorial (unheated marble) in February. I wonder if the 18th century women had heavier underpinnings to keep out cold. I am in awe of the plaid piecing in Claire's tartan dress. A tour de force.

    DIYstopia? Perfect
    Sewcialist Revolution? Just so amazing! Really appeals to me personally. Also, the dress she made is just as awesome as the name she chose 😊
    All of this really makes me want to start watching the show again. I did watch the first season, but fell off after that. I have read all of the books, but the details have gotten pretty hazy in the intervening years. But I think I’ll just start again at the beginning, and see how far I get. Lovely video, great job on the series! Your videos actually confirmed some of the things I thought, such as it didn't make much sense that Claire would have so many different clothes being an outsider with no money in a strange land. But most of them were still beautiful, my favourite is the yellow Paris dress. And the wedding dress was lovely, but to be honest I didn't like how it fit the actor. It seemed like it was too tight and too short for her torso, her chest was squashed and at the same time looked like it would fall out of her too low neckline, it seemed very unflattering.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  Před 6 lety

      Thank you for the comment! Two things that I didn't address in the video. Terry Dresbach originally had a piece of silk gauze (going from memory here) that was on the neckline. According to her blog, the removing of the gown caused this to wear down because it was so delicate. A viewer sent me a picture. I'll try and share that with you.
      As far as the fit of the gown, its actually the stays that are doing this pancaking/pillowing. I'm not crazy about it either to be honest. I'm not an expert on stays, so I can't say for sure, but I think it's likely because they are strapless, so it creates this squished look.

    • @rachaeltrujillo9960
      @rachaeltrujillo9960 Před 2 lety

      I interpreted the fit as a story line choice. It wasn’t made or tailored for her since Ned purchased it from the brothel last minute. So I think it wasn’t meant to fit perfectly. Still loved it though!

    I do have one other Q 4 U. I've been trying to find a way to direct my question to the O- costume dept., but haven't been able to find contact info. No matter......
    Q: In S1 of Outlander when Mrs. Fitz dresses Claire for the 1st time in 18th century garb how many layers and / or how much fabric weight would you guess Claire was carrying once she had completely been dressed from head to toe? I tried to count the layers but the split second editing made it difficult to count. I can only guess that the sheer (apparent) weight of the garment would make a fully clothed lake or sea rescue (a la S3 - Jaime 'fishing' Claire out of the ocean; or Claire trying to walk on the beach with fully soaked clothing, S3, E11 or E12 ??).
    Another question / thought I had was......I would assume the since it took on average somewhere in the neighborhood of a month or more to complete most 18th century dresses that women's wardrobes would not have been that huge. My Gr-grandmother once told me that most ladies she knew got by with only about 3 or 4 dresses total during any given year. You only sought to buy or make another dress when the one(s) you had fully wore out or tore apart.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  Před 5 lety

      Terry Dresbach is on Twitter under Outlander Costumes. That's how most people contact her. I don't know if she would have that answer. I can ask Brenna. She might have an answer for you.
      According to Brenna, there is no way that someone like Claire would have that many clothes. Again, I can confirm this with her. And if you have more in depth questions, I can forward them to her. She is very helpful. 😁
