A C.A.S. story about a hero going in search of his love who has been kidnapped by an evil being? Yeah, this is going to end badly.

This is what I expected as soon as I heard the apes described. And really, Tiglari wasn't pursuing a woman he loved, but a prize he wanted to acquire, so I can't be that sad for him. Since he has his human head, he can now warn off any future questers. If he chooses to, that is; Tiglari doesn't strike me as the most altruistic of people.
Trope inversion would have been that Maal Dweb was a woman, and her entire harem consisted of smart and creative women with no desire to become wives and mothers, and were perfectly happy as scholars, artists, or inventers. LGBT+ themes optional.
The men who pursued them would have been judged on a case-by-case basis, joining them in the world's most exclusive university if they'd truly loved them and wanted to rescue them, but turned into apes if they were entitled stalkers who were planning to demand sex and/or marriage in exchange for "rescuing" them.

Because that’s what good cosmic horror really needs: a tidy moral bludgeon.
