    The advice on cutting out news and toxic social media is gold. News media is entirely based upon keeping us in a perpetual panic and at each other's throats so we will keep watching. It's shameful and we should all stop letting them play us for fools.

      Exactly, peddling fear and hate for profit. We still get to live in the toxic world created by that cynicism, but at least we can take care not to be personally manipulated. I wish we could persuade as many people as they do.

      giving this a like because I think its great how the youtube woodworking community supports each other. Being an introvert it was really easy for me to cut out toxic social media. Unfortunately I just can't give up the news, I often joked that I read to much news, but what I'm really doing is reading deeper into the issues. I'm not reading up on the latest political commentary, because that is the another brand of toxic social media.

    Feb 1, 2022 I weighed 215 lb. This morning I weighed 178. That's 37 pounds in a few months. All I have done so far is cut out the sugar, the snacks and do a bit of portion control. I am pleased with my progress and I passed my goal of 30 pounds. I have upgraded my goal to reach 155. If I can do this at 64, anyone can.

      4/6/22 (height 6'1) I was 265lbs, only cut out sugar and went low carb and just being active around house and garage by July was down to 215-220lbs.

    Great advice. In 2019 I turned 50 and was morbidly obese, out of shape, headed to an early grave. I read a book called "Younger Next Year" and it changed my life. Simple advice, a lot like this video. It boils down to, excercise hard 6 days a week for the rest of your life, 2 days of strength training and 4 days of aerobics and quit eating junk. I started out walking, at first a half mile walk was a pretty good workout, now I can ride my mountain bike for 2+ hours and feel great. I rediscovered my passion for biking that I'd lost 20 years earlier. My wife and I found a great trainer who works with both of us at the same time, worth the money for sure. I'm down 80 pounds, but more importantly, I'm in pretty good shape. I used to count puttering around my woodshop as excersise, what a fool I was. I don't miss the old Dave.

    What great advice Steve! Here's my story... A little over a year ago I was closer to 400 pounds than I was 300. Today I'm at about 230 and really working at getting to 190. On April 1, 2022 after about 100 pounds lost I decided I was at a low enough weight to try running. I was able to get a whopping 0.4 miles and it took over 6 minutes. I was completely spent and was not happy with myself. I got a running app and now 2.5 months later, depending on my route, I can run about 3.8 - 4.0 miles at about 11:15 per mile. I'm set for a 10k on July 4 and while I may not be able to run the entire 6.2 miles, especially since 2nd half is all up hill, I'm very confident I'll run the first 3.5 miles and then run/walk the rest. I'll start doing weight training and flexibility training next. While I still have a pretty good bit to go for my weight goal, I feel so much better.

      Inspirational! Do a run/walk no shame in that. Start slowly so you can finish strong. Adrenaline will carry you if you don't start too fast. Good Luck on the 10K

      How did you do on the 10k?
      If I'd seen your comment earlier I would've suggested no exercise 1 to 2 weeks before the 10k. You've made such progress you probably don't know your baseline when rested and restored from all the constant workout. Also hyperventilating maybe 10 to 15 minutes before the run starts and focusing on getting as much oxygen as possible before your body requires more oxygen while your running.
      Doing these 2 things I would expect to double your expected distance while maintaining the same speed. And feel better throughout and after.
      Take my advice with a grain of salt, I'm no expert, just thing's I've noticed throughout life. Our bodies may work differently as well.
      Glad you got a new lease on life. Hope you are able to keep it up and stay injury free and healthy.

      @@jamesrogers4674 thanks for asking and the advice. I did so running 3 days before the race. I didn't do as well as I had hoped but I just keep thinking about only 0.4 miles 3 months earlier. I finished in 71 minutes and 7 seconds. I was hoping for less than 70 but that is close. The hills on the back half got me and I needed to walk 3 minutes more than my goal. Overall all I'm happy as I finished the race and a year ago I don't I could have.

      @@BronkBuilt that's pretty dang good. I'd be extremely happy with that. Averaged within around 30 seconds/ mile and went 1/3 further with tougher terrain. Can't ask for better than that.
      I chased the 1 mile record for a while when I was in my late teens. 4:08 was my best, I lagged on the last 1/4 mile. Didn't stick with it for long enough to reach my full potential. Was still a win though, I was crippled when I was 7 and 8 so that was plenty good enough.

    Awesome video Steve. Doctors found a melanoma on my chest 1 week after I got married. We caught it just barely in time. Massive wake up call in your early 30s. I have a big ol scar to remind me about sunscreen

      Have had melanoma removed as well. Sunscreen unfortunately is not the answer and neither is staying out of the sun. Get the right amount of sun and very important stop wearing sun glasses as they stop the natural process your body starts to protect itself. Seriously research sun glasses and skin cancer.

    This is life changing advice sir, I quit smoking two packs a day, lost weight, lost my beer keg belly and started intermittent fasting, have lost a ton of weight, eliminated sugar and fast food and it feels amazing. Glad to see you doing better !!!!

    I can personally attest to what Steve is saying. In that I mean, I have been to Steve's house a number of times when we lived in the same town. The first time I went over he had a mini fridge stocked with beer. I have noticed first hand his progression into a heathier lifestyle. Although we are more acquaintances than anything else - I must commend him for the direction he has taken. Great job Steve!!

    Lots of good sensible advice Steve. I couldn't agree more about dropping the news. I haven't bought or read a newspaper for 40 years and haven't watched the news for 30. The "news" is NOT important. As far as newspapers and broadcasters are concerned only bad news is news anyway. I also stopped drinking 9 years ago and have lost 25lbs in the last year including intermittent fasting. I just need to start some more vigorous exercise although at 67 my running days may be behind me.

      I'd be far more forgiving of printed newspapers than any digital (video) source. If a printed newspaper is part of a routine, there's nothing bad about that - but use what you read to think critically. News shouldn't be consumed, but considered. If you aren't thinking about it and its implications, then it isn't worth the time.

      @@ejburke8271 One of the problems is that buying a newspaper and reading it is part of so many peoples' routine which just encourages the vermin that write for them to write more lies and induce more panic. Every newspaper slants the news to fit its bias, just like tv news and every other form of mainstream media so why would you forgive them? The only sources telling the truth about the virus fiasco for example were digital sources but they got censored and even removed by Google, YT, Facebook et al for daring to question the official narratives. Yet they are now being proved correct - even vindicated by the recent Gates interview (who didn't get censored of course).

    I'd like to add one more thing to what was suggested in this video. SLEEP!! I lost 80 pounds in 50 weeks 14 years ago because of a heart health scare. I went from 320 lbs to 240 (I'm 6'3" tall). I did all of the things that you mentioned; portion control, exercise, etc. My weight loss really took off when I decided to become militantly protective of my sleep time. I went from existing on 4-5, sometimes 6, hours of sleep per night to making certain that I got at least 7 and preferable 8 hours of sleep. I found that when I got enough sleep, my body wasn't craving the quick "sugar fix" for energy. It became much easier to walk past Snickers bars without picking one up. I also had more energy for exercise and life in general. My brain function increased, as well. Memory got better, attention to detail improved, and my ability to focus for longer periods of time was a huge benefit.
    I was in my mid-forties when I began the weight loss and am now fast approaching my 60th birthday. Once I lost the weight, I decided to get into officiating field hockey games year round. I have officiated over 5000 field hockey games in the past 14 years, including NCAA Division I contests, and it all started with just deciding that I didn't want to die young.
    Thank you for the motivation to try woodworking during the pandemic, and may you continue to find health and happiness in all that you do!!

    First one is key. So much of what we do is framed around drinking. Parties in high school. Hanging out after high school. Free time in college or the military. It's nonsense. Nothing is to be gained from overdoing it. Great post!

    I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention getting enough high quality sleep. The amount of sleep you need depends on a lot of different factors so it takes some experimentation to get it dialed in. Personally, if I don't get enough sleep, everything else suffers. Work, training, mood, appetite, etc. I try to stay consistent also, going to bed and waking up at the same time, including on weekends.

    I'm a guy in my 20s and need to lose the weight and live life like I'm a young man. I think of myself as unhealthy, and I feel like my weight reflects that headspace. Recently yoga, biking, and calorie counting have entered my life. But you're right Steve, being healthy is a priority. I have tried this before, but I want this to be the moment I keep it going.

    Great advice Steve. I am 56, just got into more serious woodworking recently (during Covid shutdowns) and appreciate your videos on that subject, but this one is just as important. Stopped smoking 7 years ago after thinking I was having a heart attack ( i didn't but it sure scared me), and cut back on alcohol to nearly quitting my last birthday. Have gotten into bike riding recently and it has done wonders for how I feel, I believe it will lead to a more regimented workout routine. I retired from my job of 28 years 6 years ago and opened up a record store and never looked back. Actually I started buying my 1st woodworking tools then because I built my own record bins for the store. Avoiding the news is also great advice, I have cut back on that tremendously as of late and it certainly helps with your stress levels. Stress will age you quicker than anything. Keep up the good work!

    Hey Steve you look marvelous. I have been on no-processed foods for years, meditate, walk/hike daily, eat salmon weekly. One "rule" I heard is eat foods with a rind, a peel, or a skin. I bake my own bread. I do have an occasional glass of wine with an Italian dinner. Did not mention "quality of sleep" which is very important. News radio/TV can be quite depressing. I go right to the funnies if I get a newspaper. People are naturally drawn to those who are happy and laugh.

    Great advice Steve. I've been sober 11 years and quit watching any news about 3-4 years ago after I had a mental breakdown. I've also cut out any true crime shows, dateline, & most recently I won't watch any movies or tv shows based on violent crimes. It's really becoming a crutch in Hollywood right now, everywhere you turn theres some new show/movie making money off some horrific thing.

    Steve, thank you for making this video. I think the advice you give in this video is exactly the type of advice that "man's men" need to hear. I think you are correct in saying that lots of men feel pressured to fit into a particular archetype of what a "man" is supposed to be, and it's really refreshing to hear that myth dispelled by such an influential figure in woodworking (traditionally, a tough-guy space). Like you, I believe we should all be striving to be our best selves, and when big figures like you advertise that stance, I think it has a meaningful impact. Anyway, great video!

    Great advice. I, too, eliminated "news" and couldn't be happier. Nothing wastes your life more than consuming sensationalism and spending hours debating politics (ie, religion) with other so absorbed people. I give a quick (and I mean 30 second) glance at the headlines in the morning to make sure nothing castrophic happened overnight, then I get on with the day.

      Same, getting rid of the news and related content was a big improvement for me. Also started asking people in my life who are busy 'living' the news to tell me more about what's going on with them and less about the news and their opinions of it, maybe a benefit for them too.

    I'll followed your content for around 11 or 12 years. Your woodworking advice is great and this lifestyle advice is pretty much spot on. I lost over 40kg over a 2 year period. That's like 1000lbs I'm sure. Slow and steady, don't crash diet. I just counted calories. Keep it up Steve, looking forward to another decade of your videos at least.

    I happened on your comments about quitting drinking. Just for me, it was the best thing I've done for myself. (40 years ago) And there are a lot of things In my history of 86 years. I do not preach about this, but I looked at a TV beer commercial one day, and said: "how come they don't talk about headaches and constant runs to the head?" And, nobody can possibly have as much fun while drinking beer as they portray. Anyway, it was a personal decision. Quitting smoking over 40 years ago--- huge.
    And, I have been a long-distance bike rider . And, I make stuff in my mess of a shop.
    So, thanks for your video. A lot of us can relate, I am sure.

    I "grew up" 3 years ago at the ripe old age of 47. Put down the bottle and don't regret it one bit. In the last 2 1/2 years I've lost over 100 lbs and am doing things that I never thought I would do. I'm doing some kind of exercise 6-7 times a week including lots of resistance, hiking, and running. I've done a half marathon every month for 11 months in a row. The only draw back is I don't do as much woodworking these days, but that's OK. I still get some in but I'm doing what I like doing and while I still can.

    I will add I too started working out daily (runs/walks; power lifting); quit drinking alcohol (today!), and started back counting calories. The late-night snacks are gone too. With only one life to live, I'd like to live it well. I"ll be 70 in a few weeks and I look almost 20 years younger. Making physically and mentally healthy choices is key. Thank you again for sharing.

    Thanks for posting this important video. You are someone I have looked up to. In 2015 i had massive heart attack at 44 years old. While doing rehab for a few months and not working per Dr's orders, i picked up woodworking and watched a lot of your videos. Fast forward 7 years, and I have a full blown shop and have made so many things. However, i need to make some personal changes regarding my health. Thanks for the insight. You definitely look great when contrasting to your older videos. Keep it up.

    Steve I want you to know your comments on enjoying the solitude of woodworking from a prior episode we’re an enormous help to my mental health. I’ve always been dependent on company for feeling satisfied but because of that statement I’ve found a way to find happiness from within.
    My physical health is ok, ebb and flow with fitness, looove food, and not going to give up the occasional beer, but I really want you to know how you changed my life with that statement.

    Great video Steve! We must be on the same wavelength. I stopped drinking, started intermittent fasting, ramped up my exercise, and stopped watching the news. I'm 47 and feel better than I ever felt in my life physically, mentally and spiritually. It is not as hard as people think to start. Your body is actually the only thing that you have full control over. If you don't believe me try to get a 5 year old to eat his brussel sprouts.

    Steve, thank you for broaching this topic. I am a 75-year-old personal trainer. All my clients are "older adults" working to do what you talk about. This had to be sed and someone like you with your wide audience is the ideal person to do it. Cudos to you by the way for realizing something had to be done and making the effort. One mor thing. I began woodworking in earnest as a result of the Covid lockdowns. I am hooked. You are my inspiration. I love your simple approach and simple designs.

    I cut out bread and other carbs last year and my health and mental outlook has changed completely. I have more energy, better motivation, a more positive outlook and a new channel started. I lost a bit of weight, I eat more nuts and proteins, drink more water. I too cut out alcohol, news, and other time wasting activities like pointless TV programs.

    A book I recommend is "Younger Next Year", written by a doctor and one of his patients, Henry S. Lodge and Chris Crowley. They list out very similar ideas:
    Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life.
    Do serious aerobic exercise four days a week for the rest of your life.
    Do serious strength training, with weights, two days a week for the rest of your life.
    Spend less than you make.
    Quit eating garbage!
    Care.
    Connect and Commit
    I swim 30 fifty yard laps 4X a week, bicycle 100 miles/week, and lift weights 3X/week. I'm 67 and feel better than I did when I was when I was 30 (when I was sedentary and fat).

    Great video Steve! I'll be 52 this year, I've started eating healthier, taking good vitamins and working out. I'm down 20lbs, my beer belly is disappearing, my blood pressure is down and I feel better than ever!

    As a 60-ish woman there's a lot of merit to this, too. My blood pressure has gone up as my sedentary lifestyle increased. Not happy about either so hearing some ways to motivate is helpful. Thanks so much and good for you about your health successes and vigilance.

    I’ve been reading a book called “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport. I struggle to get off my screens, but I feel so much better when I do. This book is providing a lot of insight on how to use technology intentionally, instead of mindlessly. And, like you said, eliminate the noise.

    I can second your tipps Steve! Removing beer and sugars and having a 10-11 hours eating window resulted in me losing 40+ lbs in a year without even really exercising.

    Steve, oddly this is the first time I've seen your channel and its about health and not woodworking. If I were to try and create a video to tell my younger self or anyone in their late 30s-40s the things I wish I had done... this would be it. You hit virtually every single important point about health and happiness. If you are in your 30s or 40s, listen up to us "old guys", start working on your personal health and happiness now, you're 50 year old future self will thank you greatly!

    Hi Steve, First off, thank you for your video series on woodworking. As somebody getting back into woodworking after a 30 year hiatus, I find your common sense, wisdom and teaching style really helpful, refreshing and enjoyable.
    I want to take issue with you a bit about your recent advice about avoiding consumption of news. I totally get how this can help make you happier. And I totally get that so much of the news can seem to be about getting clicks, eyeballs, and engagement through exaggeration and alarmism. As a recently retired 40 year veteran of television news as a cameraman, believe me when I say that I get that.
    Here's the problem with your advice though. Journalism is an essential part of a functioning democracy. If you are only getting your news from hanging out with friends who only (God forbid) get their news from Facebook or CZcams, then you really aren't able to make informed decisions about how you live, and importantly how you vote. What I am saying is that a careful, broad and wide ranging consumption news is probably a good thing for such a smart person as yourself, and it certainly is good for society at large.There are a lot of really hard working journalists committed to doing the high quality work. You seem to dismiss this. You'd be wrong.
    Now, if you want to hang out in your shop all time and just make things, and have no involvement with society at large, I guess that is OK, but I think you'd agree that this is how we get goofy people elected into office in the first place; by uninformed voters making uninformed choices.
    There was a lot of good life style advice in this video about why you are healthier. I just don't think being ignorant in these complicated times is necessarily good advice for a functioning democracy.

    You NAILED IT on not watching the news. I’m going on 2 years and it’s true if something important happens I find out from people close to me… TV in general isn’t something I’m watching….. if I see a series on Apple TV that looks good I’ll start watching. I pick and choose the type of things to watch through categories. I do however need to stop consuming reels on instagram. They suck me in for too much wasted time. Thanks for your tips on getting healthier!!

    I love that you're posting health information. You are a LIFESTYLE brand, not just a woodworker. I love when I do these types of posts on my social media or CZcams channel, because it makes you even more human and likable. And yes, you look soooo much younger and healthier! I have lost about 16 pounds since last year and I now run about 5 miles each morning during the week and I lift 2-3 times per week. I have never looked better. :)

    Steve has moved beyond woodworking and is now a life coach, and I approve!
    About 3 years ago, I lost 50+ pounds by following most of the same steps Steve outlines in this video: gave up drinking, started exercising and eating healthy, and don't eat after dinnertime until the next day. The key is consistency. Set a routine and STICK TO IT. It would shock people at work when they would invite me to lunch when I would say, "No thanks, that's when I hit the gym." Lunchtime was the only place I could fit my workouts in, so that's what I did. And it worked. I looked better. I felt better. And, I know Steve didn't get into this, but let's just say my "marital life" also improved significantly.
    I had a rough time the past year, and put about 20 of the 50 lbs I had lost back on. I have been struggling with staying consistent with my workout and diet lately. Hearing from Steve in this video is what I was looking for to motivate me to shed that 20 lbs again.
    WWMM: It's not just for woodworking. It's a way of life!

    A thing I’ll add to the exercise tip that was the most important thing for me in terms of frequency is find activities that you actually like and do that. I run and lift but I’m prone to making excuses to skip days, but I’ve been playing competitive tennis since high school and even now at nearly 40 I still get excited to go out and play 5-6 days a week, it doesn’t feel like exercise because I enjoy it. The best exercise program/activity is the one that you’ll stick with; don’t lift if you don’t like lifting, don’t run if you hate running, try a bunch of different things and stick w the one you’re excited about

    One thing I didn't expect today was a video on health and wellness from Steve Ramsey; however, it didn't disappoint.
    For me the biggest change was during the first COVID lockdown - just cutting out a bag of tortilla chips every / every other night cut out over 1,000 kCal and throwing in a bit of swimming each day gave me time to think, time away from the noise of life, etc... just those two things stopped attacks of gout, gave me more energy, and made me _feel_ happier.
    I do have to disagree with some points though: I'll never be a shave-a-day guy, and I don't plan on hiding my greys 😅

    Steve,
    Excellent report. I was amazed at your ‘younger’ photos. I had a major heart attack 11 years ago. Died and was shocked twice to get a heart beat. I was around 238 lbs. Started slowly reducing and am now 194. Couldn’t break the 215 plateau. I was only drinking diet soda. Read a report that diet soda is just as bad as regular soda. Stopped totally and started drinking water only. No beer and rarely an adult beverage when out to dinner. Maybe 4 a year.
    Soon after stopping diet soda I got off the plateau
    and kept getting closer to the goal of 200. Interesting that when you cut back your food intake, your stomach shrinks. Eating my original size plate now would cause major discomfort.
    I read somewhere this very important tip:
    “When you feel a hunger pain it means it’s time to eat.
    It does NOT mean how much to eat!”
    I was guilty of this common problem:
    ‘Eating for oral gratification’.
    I have another easy diet suggestion but I’ve
    rambled on enough. Oh, I’ve had TWO melanoma
    operations and will be getting scans forever.

      Instead of saying “I don’t have time for that” I now say “That is not important to me” or “that’s not a priority to me.” The worlds great equalizer is time. Everyone has the same number of hours in a day. The difference is how you CHOOSE to spend it.

    I cut news in 2000 and never looked back. You're the only other person that I know of that has done it! I'm sure there are others, but you don't hear about it often.
