    • @alaric_
      @alaric_ Před 10 měsíci +22

      @Kvarkki The reason for it? The Finnish summer (the time when nothing is covered in ice and snow) lasts for couple of months. The rest of the year, roughly 8-10 months, there is pitch black, cold and wet, even colder and wet or snow.
      So being there in the UK HQ, warm and cozy year around where the windows don't even need double glazing.. Snow is nice little tricle for a few weeks... It's easy to say to "spread the vacations". In Finland, there are two months when the vacation makes any sense...

    • @Kvarkki
      @Kvarkki Před 10 měsíci +6

      @@alaric_ You WOULD need double glazing - it's just that some of the buildings are listed and can't have those adjustments made to them. And many of them are managed by property owners who are able to get the houses rented out even if they are leaky and cold in the winter. I have slept in bed with four blankets on in London because I was freezing.
      The UK would also need a robust energy policy where double glazing was required by law in every house regardless of their age. It hurt my soul to know that the gas heating was on (intermittently) in the winter, but all of the heat escaped in moments. Not to mention that the radiator placement was inefficient in the houses I lived in: it was on the opposite wall to the window, not under it, so the warm air never even circulated properly. The amount of energy the UK must waste every winter is astonishing to think about.
      The cold is also different in the UK than in Finland. Partly because of the housing, partly because of the humidity. It is easier to tolerate -30C in Finland than 5C in the UK.

    In Denmark we have something called industrial holiday.
    3 weeks every summer.
    You have 6 weeks paid vaccination pr year.
    Education is free, doctors and hospitals are free, free dentist til you are 18.
    You get financial support when you go to university, and a lot of other stuff. And that is why the tax is so high.

    At least in Sweden, industries have a set month in the summer where they close down everything (industrisemester), but in other companies there's usually a rotation to have someone present every week of the summer (it's me this summer as I took my vacation in may like a weirdo 😂), but yes most activity slows down considerably at most companies are low on staff.

    I'm required by law to have at least 4 weeks holiday plus public holidays here in Norwat. But most companies have even more; I'm required to have at least 5 weeks holiday per year, and at least 3 of them needs to in July; in addition we all have mandatory holiday between Christmas and new year; and the whole easter week.
    Last year I had to take a "surprise" week off in December because I had forgotten to use all my weeks.

    In Finland, in all workplaces, not all employees are on vacation in the same month, but only some are on vacation.
    But if there are not so many employees at the workplace that there would be replacements during a certain holiday season, then all the employees are on vacation, e.g. during the summer vacation.
    And for the cottage you can get (if you have the money) an additional device for the outdoor toilet so that you don't have to shovel excrement.

    Entire mill towns in the north of england used to do something similar. All the mills and engineering businesses shut for 2 weeks, all the maintenance would get done and everyone else would go on holiday. The different towns had different weeks. And the school hols were made to match. So Bolton hols was the last week of June and first week of July and hols abroad were way cheaper!!! Downside, you'd have to come back in school and Christmas and Easter hols were just a week each. All stopped now as the mills have all gone and the schools had to conform to a standard timetable. So all the parents lost out on cheaper hols.
