Opening 70+ Year Old Jars Of Cherries Vs Microscope 1940s

- Now we are just assuming this is cherries because that is one of the things the guy used to grow on the farm but he also grew other stuff. Under further inspection it looked like mixed vegetables.14:34 Looks like a possible worm
In 1943, Grandma never imagined her jars would end up on youtube for the whole world to see.

it's a wine equivalent for drain, don't mind
"It's gotta be grapes or cherries..." Nah. That's a jar of evil.
Exactly 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I read that as soon as he said it, hilarious!
Looks like an old jar of mincemeat to me.
A few years ago I worked for a local heating company so I spent time in basements of many older homes. I was amazed at how many people forgot they had stuff like this floating around, especially if the homeowner was elderly and hadn't been down the stairs in years. I recall one particular house where these old jars were lined up by the hundreds and each one was dated / tagged with the contents. Some were cloudy and others were quite clear so you could figure out what was inside. The key seemed to be the condition of that rubber gasket. If it was dried / cracked from many previous uses then it didn't hold up over the years. For those not familiar, the home canning process is about placing the jars in hot water, which expands the air and the contents inside. (contents to the brim for less air space) Once the jar is hot you close the wire bail to hold the gasket tight and as it cools the jar is now under a vacuum, which is what preserves the product. The food that lasts the longest is usually anything in pickle juice or anything that was cooked / heated all the way through. (kills bacteria) Anyway, this was 20 years ago and I was looking at product from the mid 30s, of which I would estimate 25% still looked like the day it was put away. The other 75% looked like a science project. Storage conditions? 150 year old basement with a rock foundation and the jars on a wooden shelf. The shelf itself was no longer level due to the wood being in direct contact with the dirt floor. Basically it was cool, dark, damp... and the jars are mouse proof.
That is so neat! Thankyou for sharing your experience!

Here we go again with another backdrop of Classic CZcams video material...
Be sure to let this dude you know you appreciate his hard efforts. For real folks, the dude put food in jars and filmed it going in, just to patiently wait almost a year to finish his project...
He is a serious CZcamsr, and deserves more cred.
Edit: I’m not talking about this video either, since I haven’t even finished it. I’m talking about the recent McDonalds project.
He should have boiled the jar's + did it right they seal with suction as they cool. Read a book or even Google home canning, I used to watch my Grandma do it in the '70's!!
Agree. My parents used to can lots of fruits and veggies in the late 60's and early- mid 70s. They used some of those jars, they found gaskets, when we cleaned out their house I found a few boxes of gaskets and 6 empty jars. I took them. RIP mom and dad.💜Oh, I just remembered they would always make a few jars of brandied cherries 🍒 for the adults but us kids always took at least one. Lol
@@Fran-tl6bx That is something that would have still been good, alcohol + canning 👍
@@frankatchison2519 I was just watching and thinking "run that jar under the hottest water you can get and it will pop right open" What my aunts do when their jelly jars won't open. I think the one on the left is either peaches or plums, the white bits look like the pits to me.
@@Courdorygirl Yeah, that is how they seal jar's if it is done right. Get them to boiling with content's in the jar. And as they cool it create's the suction to seal the cap's or lid's down and sealing them without germ's. So getting them almost that warm when opening release's the suction, so they may be opened with ease.😅😁😋

I saw cherries and some orange or lemon peel and maybe a few more spices, could be a cherry compote. Not all fruit compotes were sweet, some were made to be savory as well.
I was thinking mincemeat pie filling.
Im from the adirondack foothills of NY and our local glass factory was all blue glass in the 1800's when it exploded and scattered it for hundreds of miles (Cleveland, NY) We have some of the highest quality silica sands here, from glacial till. At one point I found canned stuff going back to the 70's in my Grandparents cellar but nothing going back this far !
"I dont want to breath any of this in" takes vigorus whiff. Lol you are a brave one sir
Re: worms ... it’s very common to have worms on produce that people have fermented or canned themselves, especially on apple products. There is even a really specific species of worm that comes from the surface of apples and lives in apple cider vinegar. They don’t hurt you or love in your body if you eat them, but they can cause stomach upset and diarrhea.
They're edible?
My mom's Missouri people (no indoor plumbing and still using kerosene lanterns, smokehouse, too) sealed the tops of their canning jars with a layer of wax along with the rubber rings. They canned everything.
"We've got some liquid there"

Man I love this ! I'm chilling in bed after a day full of food and wine and this is just what I needed! It looks like mince pie filling that's pretty common in the UK!
I thought that's what it looked like too!!
That's exactly what I thought. The little cubes looked like wiggly bits of suet. Reminded me to get ready for Christmas pies!
Good sir, I enjoy your videos very much, but please, for your own safety and for our peace of mind, wear some gloves.
@Im Toxic it's not because of the dust. It's because of the bad bacteria in the food.
Im Toxic Im Toxic What are you on about? You literally know nothing about me so you shouldn’t be making an assumption like I’m spoiled, but either way that has nothing to do with my comment. I said that because I don’t think he should be touching things like that because they might be harmful. My concern for him has nothing to do with disgust. Why would I be watching if I “say ew to everything”. Really try using some sense before being so toxic, especially on Christmas.
@Im Toxic you may want to consider growing up sometime. Nobody likes people like you
@Im Toxic yes you are. You’re very toxic. Just enjoy the video and look at old food.
It's got to be TEAMING with bacteria.
I live sort of nearby Lake Michigan and the glass made out of the sand is beautiful. The dunes are so pretty. I went on a field trip there when I was younger and the tour guide showed us one of those ball things that used to go on street lights I think, the point is the glass looked that shade of blue.
Can't get enough of this channel. Great content! So relaxing and interesting, this is old school CZcams without those prep vloggers and make up youtubers feuds!

I have returned with a spoon
Those look like old style home canning jars
I love those jars! I love to bottle up food, and especially like using older jars. Now, these are just too old for me to risk breaking or having food spoil.
I use some 9f my grandmother's Kilner jars. The trick is to pull on the tab on the seal and the seal will break without harming the glass jar.
Dude, you are incredible.
One of my favorites CZcams channels so far. I really appreciate your naturality and few edited videos.

Those blue canning jars are valuable. Thanks for sharing. I love these.....
Let them sit at room temperature for 24-48hours and then look, and if you have access to peatre dishes, put a sample on them. Incubate them and see the wonderful delight hidden away!
You won't see anything when first opening, because the seal wasn't compromised.
I enjoy winding down at home with your videos playing as white noise. So relaxing. Such a chill environment, and really interesting stuff too.
13:45 : I'm not a hundred percent sure, but that looks really similar to how muscle fibers (maybe meat of some sort) look under the microscope.
That would make perfect sense since I'm pretty sure the jars are mincemeat pie filling.
My first thought is that this looks like canned Mincemeat to me, which would explain the different textures, different types of fruit, and the shortening type substance. If it is mincemeat, then the spices may have been the cause of what you were smelling when you got that baked bean type whiff.
I thought the exact same thing when he first showed the jar@!
I've yet to learn what his name is so I'll just call him NEWL (New England Wild Life) but I wonder if he ever gets a good laugh from some of these comments lol.

“I’m gonna put on my mask” less than a week before covid hit.
An 87-year old relative passed away very recently, and I was involved in the process of cleaning up his old house. We found a jar of peaches from 1959 in the basement. Unfortunately one of my cousins dropped the jar, it broke and stank all the basement for a couple of days.
It's amazing to realize people just go through the process of preparing those big jars of fruit, and then boom, they forget them for decades. There were a few other food items in boxes, like cans, sugar packs and other things that must have fed a bunch of rats and cockroaches over the decades.
No cherries for my Shirley Temple 😢
the food in the jars looked really nasty, but up close some of those particles are cool looking. lol the peas did look edible. maybe they weren't that old, just sitting in moisture.
Gets spoon...
Uses big nail for the other jar 😂 I love him
Sometimes it helps to pull the rubber to open it. It destroys the vacuum.
Great content, love from Germany 😊
I never thought I would find this stuff so fascinating. Love it
The large coloured masses are just the skin cell aspects of the cherry, a lot of times you will find in fruit the most interesting textures on the organic composition of the fruit itself, pomegranate is an interesting one, just as the whole fruit is very fascinating in the way it's structure presents itself, a piece of pomegranate skin also resembles itself with hexagons and geometrical structures. It doesn't seem like to me that you have a whole lot of bacteria going on there, mainly cellular structures, but in samples you tend to get either dominantly bacteria or mould, as they counteract each other.
Also please correct me if i'm wrong, I just spent time on a project at University doing some sampling of random things, so I'm not entirely sure about everything that's going on here!
‘I’ve dealt with a lot of old food’ - No Kidding! You are one brave guy and we love your videos! Keep up the great (and fun for us) work! Happy Holidays!
Ik this is 2 yrs old but ive recently been binge watching your videos. I love them. Its so neat to see old stuff for some reason, imagining and sering what my parents and grandparents ate and drank... Kinda going back in time, except the food is gross most of the time. But lots of the stuff you have are awesome memories and collectables
Home canner's still use those blue glass cap's today...and the jar's!!!! If they would have poured paraffin wax on top they might still be good!
@eddie Dickens you can still buy them at a general store, or maybe at a brewing supply! They would know where to get them, anyway....now they usually use rubber sealed tin cap's and screw down hollow topped lid's.
@@AntzemEmnza Exactly or in bad winter's it can mean starving, eating game if available, which I have done. (One bullet one animal) or Smoking, drying, or canning. I am in Washington,State 🇺🇸 about 50 mile's from Canada. Where are you from? What does new & m, mean in word's??

i love your channel so much, all the old food stuff (and foreign food stuff) is so interesting to me! i really enjoy when i get to see the stuff come out of its container and go under the microscope and the results of the tests are so interesting. i also love it when you eat the old foods, you've got a really great immune system i bet
My grandmother used to use jars like these to preserve tomatoes and beets. She used to joke that they’d be good “10 years maximum.” The contents never managed to hang out long enough though. I believe they were meant to be used with brine/oil to help stop air from getting in.
My parents canned a lot and poured wax on top of everything, I think to make a bacteria barrier.
Discovered you a few minutes ago and am totally hooked.... Keep it up... Very interesting

It’s crazy how that has just been sitting in those jars 80 something years. Literally older than my grandparents.
This is so cool. Your channel and yourself are so very authentic. Something about what you do is very calming as well.. easily one of my favorite CZcams channels! Happy Thanksgiving! ☺️
He is very relaxing to watch after a long day.
These jars are beautiful! 🙂
My grandmother used to make that, it's peaches and cherries, with raisins.
I had the oldest mason jars that you could possibly have some from one grandmother on one side of the world and some from the grandmother on the other side of the world. They were amazing! I had about 1000 from each grandma. One grandmother had 12 kids and grew all of her own food. These jars were perfect. Some of them I could have bought a house with I think. People wanted a couple of them really bad. I had a relative steal them from me. So now I have an obsession with getting jars at thrift stores. When you took metal to that glass I screamed "Oh he doesn't deserve that jar! "LOL it just came out of my mouth in the Dead Silence.! Please next time run hot water over it if you would PLEASE it often will break the seal. It's not going to affect the food inside just a little Heat. The loss of both grandmothers jars and the fact that my family stayed alive because of them and they were the most beautiful greens and blues and had glass tops with the tin rings and every shape you can imagine. They were like jewelry and my heart is broken that they're gone so please don't use metal and glass in front of me. I'm laughing this nervous laugh the whole time I'm saying this voice to text. There is a tiny bit of humor in it I know you can't hear by reading this. But I would hurt you to get to any kind of older mason jar or canning jar at a thrift store for sale like a football player even though I weigh 80 lbs. LOL you can have the food inside. These are something that I just can't explain I choose them over diamonds now. Take care ! if you ever want to get rid of any of them you know where I'm at. Well not yet but you know. You might get more than you need. Definitely start looking for the big green ones they are incredible.
Thanks for the jar fix.
I love your story, I wonder how many time's those older blue+ green ball + Mason's kept people full or even saved thier life??? Thanx for remembering and sharing! They are special, my Grandma alway's had something good in the root cellar😁☺👍👉🇺🇸👈 Apple Butter + Apricot's...mmmm

Interesting story. Sorry your family did that to you. But those were his jars and he can do what he likes. They are very old and most people wouldn’t know how to open them. Canning jars and lids are not close to being the same now. You’ll have to forgive him on how he opened them. He wants to make this video for us and our interests. I find it fascinating. How some foods hold up and some do not.
Idk what were looking at, but I can't stop watching.
Love your vids mang. Thanks for the entertainment.
“but we’ll open those up just for the hell of it” idk why but that made me laugh xD
Just a little tip, if you want to open sealed jar like this you have to pull the rubber thing
I think that looks like mincemeat. Makes sense given the time period as well.
Your right, raisins apples suet and spices.
Yep, exactly what I thought also. The stuff he thinks is carrots is actually orange peels! Lol. And the things he thinks are cherry pits are probably walnuts or other kind of nut.
@2:23 I thought you were gonna say “we’re gonna pop these cherries”😂
They bought those red rubber seal's prior to the '40's that was all used for the war. WW2 I mean!!!
It would be so cool if we could get cgi effects to recreate what the cans and jars looked like in their prime. How cool would that be. Like that opening scene on the titanic movie
I love those old mason jars that the cherries came in and the old cans of corn and peas also
This will be great video evidence for the CDC investigation.
I think I'm going to write a zombie movie script and have it start with this guy opening a 100 year old jar of grape jelly.
If that stuff fermented into either ethyl alchohol or acetic acid then it should be safe to eat. 🤔
Edit: After hearing about the nematode/worm thing, perhaps it was best you didn't try any. Lol.
also a lot more fun to eat
His plumber must love him!
5:26 *just made me laugh out loud for no apparent reason* 😆🤣
bro those red ring seals are def. dried out but the whole jar is intact... lid and lightning bail! Given the color and time period those were produced, especially the blue glass jars, were last produced in 1923. Making them a minimum of 100 years old. and Ball themselves phased those kinds of jars out for wet storage in their 1969 canning guide. Haven't watched the whole video yet but i wouldn't be surprised to see lead show up as really old clear glass had lead added to make it clearer.
