  • Now we are just assuming this is cherries because that is one of the things the guy used to grow on the farm but he also grew other stuff. Under further inspection it looked like mixed vegetables.14:34 Looks like a possible worm

A few years ago I worked for a local heating company so I spent time in basements of many older homes. I was amazed at how many people forgot they had stuff like this floating around, especially if the homeowner was elderly and hadn't been down the stairs in years. I recall one particular house where these old jars were lined up by the hundreds and each one was dated / tagged with the contents. Some were cloudy and others were quite clear so you could figure out what was inside. The key seemed to be the condition of that rubber gasket. If it was dried / cracked from many previous uses then it didn't hold up over the years. For those not familiar, the home canning process is about placing the jars in hot water, which expands the air and the contents inside. (contents to the brim for less air space) Once the jar is hot you close the wire bail to hold the gasket tight and as it cools the jar is now under a vacuum, which is what preserves the product. The food that lasts the longest is usually anything in pickle juice or anything that was cooked / heated all the way through. (kills bacteria) Anyway, this was 20 years ago and I was looking at product from the mid 30s, of which I would estimate 25% still looked like the day it was put away. The other 75% looked like a science project. Storage conditions? 150 year old basement with a rock foundation and the jars on a wooden shelf. The shelf itself was no longer level due to the wood being in direct contact with the dirt floor. Basically it was cool, dark, damp... and the jars are mouse proof.

There is even a really specific species of worm that comes from the surface of apples and lives in apple cider vinegar. The large coloured masses are just the skin cell aspects of the cherry, a lot of times you will find in fruit the most interesting textures on the organic composition of the fruit itself, pomegranate is an interesting one, just as the whole fruit is very fascinating in the way it's structure presents itself, a piece of pomegranate skin also resembles itself with hexagons and geometrical structures. It doesn't seem like to me that you have a whole lot of bacteria going on there, mainly cellular structures, but in samples you tend to get either dominantly bacteria or mould, as they counteract each other.
Also please correct me if i'm wrong, I just spent time on a project at University doing some sampling of random things, so I'm not entirely sure about everything that's going on here!

My grandmother used to use jars like these to preserve tomatoes and beets. She used to joke that they’d be good “10 years maximum.” The contents never managed to hang out long enough though. I believe they were meant to be used with brine/oil to help stop air from getting in.

I had the oldest mason jars that you could possibly have some from one grandmother on one side of the world and some from the grandmother on the other side of the world. They were amazing! I had about 1000 from each grandma. One grandmother had 12 kids and grew all of her own food. These jars were perfect. Some of them I could have bought a house with I think. People wanted a couple of them really bad. I had a relative steal them from me. So now I have an obsession with getting jars at thrift stores. When you took metal to that glass I screamed "Oh he doesn't deserve that jar! "LOL it just came out of my mouth in the Dead Silence.! Please next time run hot water over it if you would PLEASE it often will break the seal. It's not going to affect the food inside just a little Heat. The loss of both grandmothers jars and the fact that my family stayed alive because of them and they were the most beautiful greens and blues and had glass tops with the tin rings and every shape you can imagine. They were like jewelry and my heart is broken that they're gone so please don't use metal and glass in front of me. I'm laughing this nervous laugh the whole time I'm saying this voice to text. There is a tiny bit of humor in it I know you can't hear by reading this. But I would hurt you to get to any kind of older mason jar or canning jar at a thrift store for sale like a football player even though I weigh 80 lbs. LOL you can have the food inside. These are something that I just can't explain I choose them over diamonds now. Take care ! if you ever want to get rid of any of them you know where I'm at. Well not yet but you know. You might get more than you need. Definitely start looking for the big green ones they are incredible.
    Thanks for the jar fix.

Interesting story. Sorry your family did that to you. But those were his jars and he can do what he likes. They are very old and most people wouldn’t know how to open them. Canning jars and lids are not close to being the same now. You’ll have to forgive him on how he opened them. He wants to make this video for us and our interests. I find it fascinating. How some foods hold up and some do not.

bro those red ring seals are def. dried out but the whole jar is intact... lid and lightning bail! Given the color and time period those were produced, especially the blue glass jars, were last produced in 1923. Making them a minimum of 100 years old. and Ball themselves phased those kinds of jars out for wet storage in their 1969 canning guide. Haven't watched the whole video yet but i wouldn't be surprised to see lead show up as really old clear glass had lead added to make it clearer.
