I didn’t get my license until I was 23, and I’m quite frankly super relieved I waited. I wasn’t diagnosed with anxiety until I was 21, so when I was first learning to drive at 16 I was an absolute wreck every time I was behind the steering wheel. I would just imagine myself making a mistake and causing a wreck, killing or hurting multiple people involved, because my brain was automatically formatting the worst case scenario in my head. And I didn’t want to tell anyone what was going through my head because I didn’t want anyone to think I was incapable, so to everyone else I was basically crumpling into a heap of tears without any clear reason why.
So yeah, definitely glad I waited. Got a near perfect score on my test, and I use my experience as a reminder to my younger siblings and other younger family members that life isn’t a race, and you don’t have to treat “milestones” as goal posts as you race towards the finish line.
Thank you, for this message. I'm and a similar position rn. It's important that we stop stigmatizing anxiety late bloomers in general and when it comes to milestones like driving. I'm taking my time before I attempt the test again. I feel like I shouldn't worry about being judged and just take my driver's tests when I'm ready for them. ❤️

this helps a lot because i'm currently working thru my drivers license and it feels like i'm too slow to everyone else since my siblings got their license at 16 and my brother holds it over my head every time he visits home.
I can relate! I didn't get my license until I was 22 and perhaps it was for the best that I waited because I used to be pretty naive in my teen years. Moral of the story: you operate on your own time, not society's time. Society has a nasty habit of lumping people in the same timeline and category. They think that if you didn't make your achievements by a certain age, you're a loser. To that line of thinking, I say "SCREW THAT!" We all learn at different paces and that makes us unique. I've even heard of people who didn't get their license until they were 30, 50, 70, you name it. To those people, I give them props. You get it when you get it!

Abraxas same with me. I live in the UK so we have roundabouts. We would usually take the second exit towards the test centre, but instead, he told me to take the first exit into the city. but I was so nervous that my mind went blank, I automatically started going for the second exit, my instructor realised as I wasn’t indicating to take the first exit which is basically a left turn. He said “oh ok we are going this way instead” I told him that I was sorry.
don't feel bad. The kid with me in my car when I was taking Driver's Ed... the teacher told him "take the next legal right turn." stupid kid tried to take a right on a one way street going left :P He never got why the teacher was yelling at him until I was asked what was wrong. I sheepishly said "uhm... right on one way going left?" and the teacher nodded and when the kid still didn't get it... he let me drive the rest of the time w/o letting the boy do any more driving that day and it was our last day to drive too!

You just made a 19 year old young man hope again. Thank you for your perspective, and the knowledge that it's not the end of the world if I don't have a license at my age yet (I like to bike to work, but it would be nice if I didn't feel behind in life. Good exercise tho :p).
Edit: Great news! I passed the driving test last June, and I have my own car on top of that! I've been a successful driver for about 9 months now!
I got my driver's license at age 26 (this year) and I wont even bother getting it if we havent move far away from the city. Some of my friends in my age doesn't even have driver's license yet. What I'm trying to say is, dont pressure yourself too much about it ;)
Don’t worry about it, I’m 20 (gonna be 21 in a few days) and I got my learners license about 4 months ago and practicing to get my full license right now. Take your time and you will get your full license at your own pace!

It’s been a very horrific story for me😢 I don’t know why I don’t have luck whenever it comes to getting my test it’s either I’m with a bad supervisor or I’m just the one with the problem, I have failed my test thrice now and I was fed up not until I was told to hire a test drive professional who could help me skip the test and get my license which I did and I got my license now.
Oh that’s a very sad story , sounds as if we both be in the same shoes I been unlucky twice and I’m actually fed up tbh 😵how can I hire a test drive professional please?

In the US, you don’t have to get a drivers license to have an ID. You just have to get a state ID card, which you can apply for as young as 15 years old. It also cost half as much as a drivers license.

Usually you say "two birds with one stone", meaning you get something while doing another thing (in this case, you get to listen to audio books on audible while driving).
But he changed the sentence because throwing stones to bird is bad, right? (and for the sake of humor)
Your experience was almost word for word exactly how mine went. A driving instructor who expects you to know how to drive, parents who refuse to teach because "that's what the instructor is for", guy with indian accent who can't speak fluent english teaching driving, etc etc.
His point about the instructor thinking you just know how to drive right from the get-go is aboslutely accurate even for the U.S.

1. You can get driving license without going to school. A few of my friends have got it like this.
2. You can get out of the jail. Someone has been like 5 times in jail and have found him a kilogram cocaine and didn't go to prison.

Driving on your own for the first time is so freeing. I love not having to depend on anyone to get me to where I need to be :)
I had the SAME experience learning how to drive. Basically a shocked instructor couldn’t believe no one had taken me driving on a back lot somewhere and that I really needed a basics session to get going.
However, I was not exhilarated when we started road courses, I had high anxiety. 😂 I got my license at 33 years old btw.

getting my license in senior year high school at 17 (this is Canada. getting your license before 18 is considered early as you're legally an adult at 18) was one of the most awesome, fun, exciting but also most annoying thing ever. the amount of people asking for convenience rides, with no care as to whether or not it's convenient for you... seeing you as a free scoop so you can be their personal chauffeur. i'd have people that i wasn't even close with tryna tag along with their friends who originally asked me for a lift. i had a friend who got it at 16, junior year at the time and he'd vent his frustration to me about why getting it at that age wasn't always the best. it wasn't until a year later that i finally understood his irritations.
AND don't forget: parents. God, first full year behind the wheel was annoying. it still can be from time to time (i'm 20 now) but ya get used to it i guess.
True. It seems like an impossible thing to drive calm and without being super nervous. I have my drivers license for 5 years now and driving just happens automatically now. I never thought I would be so chill while driving like I am now.

As someone who literally lives in the same province as this guy apparently, I can confirm that this is exactly how getting a driver's license here is like.
I did not have the same experience with my first time in a car as you, Dom. My mom took me to an abandoned parking lot. I opened the driver's side door and just froze. I was behind the wheel of a two ton death machine. If something got damaged or I hit an idiot kid running suicidally in front of the car, I'd be at fault. That scared me. Which it shouldn't have given WE WERE IN AN ABANDONED PARKING LOT. I was still afraid of the accelerator for a good long while and didn't make it above walking speed for several days. It was nerve wracking.
And I'll never be able to drive on the freeway because if I go above 40mph, I can no longer process my surroundings. That's hazardous, as I'm sure you know.
I'll probably spend my driving life taking back roads and a few main roads, avoiding highways and freeways completely
I had the same driving anxieties and didn’t get my license til 33. It took a full 2 years before I tried the highway and still avoided it when I could. But eventually need pushed me out of my safety zone, just like need pushed me toward my license. And at this point I have driven across the U.S. and back.

Funny thing, I used the test route that's posted on youtube as a mock driving test and it actually helps. It's not exactly the same but it helps you get the whole gist of it.

I felt the same way when I took driver's ed. I was not expecting to leave the parking lot, yet we were driving around town on the 1st drive! Luckily I drove for the first time with my dad the day before. It feels good to know I'm not alone in feeling unprepared, and I was 18 too.

In Australia we have L (written test and cant go above 60 and supervision), then you do the practical test after 120 hrs (100 day, 20 night) and about a year to get your red P's (cant go above 90), one year after is the green P's (cant go above 100) and then your full licence

I live in BC, and I wish I knew or took it seriously when my dad told me to get my license at 16. He wasn't going to give me a car or expect me to drive much but turns out it's something to do with lowering insurance rates with good driving discounts for the future. Every year even if you don't drive, just having a license ups that discount rate. Well, I took my N (somewhat G2 equivalent) test at 22 so I'm still stuck with low discounts 6 years later with no penalties or accidents. Well, this year they changed the insurance policy and now my discount rate is even more worthless.

Maybe because animation is hard and time consuming, and even with a team a nearly 10-min video takes awhile to make. Especially since they started adding more color.

I went to a driving school for my road test and failed the first time. The instructor told me I literally just didn't look over my shoulder enough, and since the test was mostly based on "visual checks", to just look around more next time.
I told him I was too short to see over the seat and he said "just pretend to" xD
Sometimes they fail student just to get more money. Because if a student fails you have to pay an extra fee for a second try. They could do that
If you’re too short raise the seat up. If you can’t raise it high enough do your best to get a different car or not drive. Being too short isn’t really a valid excuse to putting peoples lives in danger.
