My first crash, first 5 miles of riding, was target fixation. I distinctly remember the thought process of "That's a turn, ok, so turn,...that's the side of the road, turn, it's approaching, TURN, that's a ditch, WHY AM I NOT TURNING OH GOD then I locked the front brake long enough to hear it squall (abs didn't even try) and it went off the side of the road, and just stopped when the frame slider dug into the dirt. No damage other than scratches, and I finished my ride and went home, but it was a powerful lesson to LOOK WHERE YOU *WANT* TO GO, NOT WHERE YOU *DON'T*
It's a good lesson for life really, you'll never reach your goal if you're not looking at that goal at all times.

On "invisibility" - I bought a yellow bike a couple year ago. Didn't care for the color, figured I'd eventually repaint it. Then I discovered "loud colors save lives" just like loud pipes. Inspired me to start wearing bright clothing/gear. Yeah it makes me look old (and at 53 I guess I am in bike world), but it's a better look than being hamburger meat on the road...
When I bought my Ninja 500 a month ago, I paid the extra for the KRT edition, solely because it was the only model in bright, shouty Kawasaki safety green all over, it's very visible. The lower-trim models were all black or red, muted matte colors that don't stand out. Sportbikes demand attention in most cases, it's not like the color is going to get you less attention, it's still loud and different.
I'm looking to get a Royal Enfield Classic 350 this year, and have been wanting the Gunmetal Gray color. It's cool, slick, blends in, and hard as shit to see, especially at night... So instead, this week I was thinking of getting their Halcyon Gray one, which is not gray at all. It's like a mix of powder blue and white. Think 1950's light blue colored cars. Is it gonna make look a bit older? Yeah, probably. Do I think it's as cool as the gunmetal gray? Nope. But that's worth the price of not being destroyed by some dude who didn't see my all dark stealth bike, when I was riding home from work, or coming back from hanging out at night.

I did the same thing. I bought Ninja green even though it was my least favorite color. Now I love it, I'm 72.

Another don't ...(if you have a heavy bike). When you go to a store and you start to park in the parking area don't go forward on a downward slope into a parking spot so that your bike has to be backed uphill to get out of your parking spot. Roll backward into the spot so that you can power out of it when it's time to go. If the slope is kinda steep and your bike is pretty heavy or you have short legs and your feet barely reach the ground you are probably going to have a really hard time getting the bike to go backward and uphill. Don't ask me how I know this. 😀
I can give the same advice for the same reason if you ride a sportbike on grass or dirt, walking it is WAY harder than on pavement, be ready for that.

+1 on quality gear. I just realized that my riding pants are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. Granted, they did go back to the factory for a "spa day" a few years ago, but still... The miraculous thing is that they still fit. 😁

I've always taken pictures of before,during and after modification. It's good if you get sidetracked or stumped.
Wow after decades and decades of experience..I certainly agree with things on your list many are months and months or years away from needing to be worried about. Motorcycling should be done from head to toe. At the head is protection for your skull and eyes. Many full face helmets eliminate or seriously restrict many absolutely necessary functions on the bike. When trying helmets, do it at a shop, for your first and second helmet, maybe 3rd! With helmet on looking straight forward, have someone walk next to you and see how many degrees of peripheral vision is cut off by the helmet, the face hole allows you maximum side to side vision without turning your head.
Second thing in modern motorcycle riding.. absolutely no phone or camera or stuff animals, or stickers on your helmet or windshield if you have one for your first year of riding. Minimum. Camera, phone or anything else should be in a closed bag, case or jacket pocket and phone should be set so that you don't know, can't know anyone is calling you or texting you while you are riding. Binary.. parallel, serial.. you are either riding your bike 110% or you are trying to die. Full stop.. talking on your phone, sending texts or selfies is done when stopped never in motion for a year to start.
Mirrors, 2 are absolutely essential to staying alive. Learn to use them, learn to adjust them, keep them clean and clear. You should be checking your mirrors multiple times per mile and should be second nature to know what is behind you, is it going faster than you and when will it overtake your bike " head on a swivel" is a motto that will keep you alive. You should know how to make turns,U-turns and practice signaling and cancelling your turn signals until your fingers bleed. Tiny lights front and back on the motorcycle work as information devices for fellow citizens on the road and eliminating lights for fashion, to make your bike look better or cool is f-cking stupid, anything and everything that comes on the bike for visibility is helpful and life saving. If you are a new rider and your new friends include people who ride drunk, high, no helmet, shorts,flip flops, no glasses, no mirrors, front brake, get new circle to ride with..if you don't know if you can stop and stop on a steep hill.. find out..same w grabbing both brakes w gorilla grip for emergency stops.. you need to know before it is needed on the road.. don't tailgate.. don't lane split.. tailgating includes other motorcycles, yes in movies it's cool to ride side by side in a close pack formation but don't do it for your first 5 years of riding. Have a Ziploc bag with a copy of everything, license, registration, insurance, on your bike. Don't get pulled over without what you agreed to have when you got your license, respect law enforcement. They give a few thousand tickets but mostly they wait for ambulance and tow truck for motorcycle riders that did all those other things..
Hot take, Properly stored tires are good for up to 10 years. Visual inspection is key. Proper inflation, and no cracking, its good to go

While riding my turbo busa, this crazy lady cuts me off. This causes me to drop my fresh slice of gas station pizza on my tank. My flip phone falls into my beer that's between my gut and the tank, making me hang up on a work call. Then I have to drop my cigarette to pull the clutch before I stall 5th gear... not a good Monday morning.

got passed on my ibt by a car doing 100kmph whilst on an 80kmph road. they were probably within a meter of me and i almost shidded myself. then proceeded to overtake my instructor and half the other cars ahead of us on a small backroad. spooky stuff. glad i was watching my mirrors like a maniac lol
The light grip thing is actually something I learned on my own last night. I'm a new rider, and I definitely felt like I was holding on a bit too tight. I loosened up and could actually feel the blood going back to my fingers. I realized then that I was clearly doing something wrong lol
Definitely helpful if on gravel type road don't tense up and fight the little jostling, just get a little loose in the arms and keep your line.

I picked up a new to me motorcycle a few weeks ago that only had 2400 miles and has been stored in a climate controlled garage for 16 years. Everything on it was from the factory, to include tires. When I mentioned that I'd have to get new tires (among other things) he'd go on rambling "THEY'RE FINE I'D RIDE THIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY RIGHT AS IT IS".Date code was 2007 lol. Bless his boomer heart, no concept of how time can wear things out.
Don't get me wrong, they LOOKED fine sure, no cracking or anything, and they very well may have been fine if I rode them until they wore out. That's not a chance I'm willing to take on a motorcycle though.
Tires do not have an expiration date. At all. Most manufactures say they don’t recommend after 10 years, but as long as they’re stored correctly, they can last a while.
When tires DO have an expiration date, FOR SURE those bitches will fall apart and be useless on that date so you have to buy new ones. OR the RFID chip in the tire says "I'm expired, it's unsafe to drive probably" and the ECU locks down the engine. I can see that.

I road about 3000 mile in India on an Enfield 350 which was built in India. Most dangerous thing I have ever done and that includes ice and rock climbing, glacier travel, etc. EVERYTHING was a hazard including bovines with a six foot wide rack of horns sitting in the middle of the road. What fun it was!
I spent 10 years and 40,000 miles bicycle commuting. I honestly don't even react at all anymore when cars do dumb stuff. It's just what's expected. Someone pulls out in front of me, I just brake or swerve to avoid and go on my way. The first time I realized that my pulse rate wasn't even going up when someone pulled out on me I wondered if there was something wrong with me but I think I just treat drivers being stupid the same way I treat water for being wet.

Do not plug tires . They do not hold up very long . The new soft compounds spit them out
The rule is "Do not plug tires". Even to get home. Life is more valuable than some inconvenience.
As far as tires go, depending on how much and how aggressively you ride. You might have to change them before they would be considered "unsafe." I put some Road 6's on my FZ1 half a year ago. Put about 7-8k miles on them. That's a pretty good run for a bike tire, but with the way they were wearing. It was still in the green, using the tire gage at work. I could've got another 5k out of them. Ended up changing them recently after a trip and ride to The Twisted Sisters. The back end kept feeling like it was going to throw out from under me. Mine ended up glassing. They had too many heat cycles, so the edge part became just as hard as the middle part tire.
So just cause you have tread left, and they are not old. Doesn't necessarily mean they are safe.
I lost a phone to a pothole which is when I grabbed a really good handle bar mount. It cost me more than my phone at the time but I never have to worry about that again.

Thanks Yammie. Brakes, tires and bedding. The rule applies to motorcycles too. Looking at upgrading my gear. Been using a lv 3 ballistics jacket as riding jacket. And Husqvarna chainsaw chaps. The chainsaw chaps are better than their motorcycle chaps.
Target fixation is a broad term used when riders are going to fast and then jump on the brakes before initiating any kind of evasive maneuvers. Once the bike is pitched foward loading the front tire heavily, this makes turning nearly impossible. You have to train yourself to stay lose and use more subtle inputs to avoid panicky stops.
Trust me when I tell you, the Noob guy doesn't belong on something like my '21 Yamaha YZ450F Monster Energy Edition, that's been heavily modified for Enduro/Desert. The insane travel of the suspension only compounds the feeling of chassis pitch, and if your coming into a corner way to hot, staying on the binders in a panic will get you balled up real quick. Before I had everything dialed in for my preferences and still had the factory tires on it. I came real close to wadding her up on a few occasions. Let's just say the bike hauls balls! If your at the top of even 3rd gear at redline, things are happening in an off road environment at rates that most humans are incapable of processing. You better have that bitch pointed in a safe direction, or death surely awaits you. 250lbs. with 65hp at the flick of the wrist isn't for everyone. But it sure does get the heart pumping.
Target fixation in this context is exactly what I've experienced, you SEE The crash, it's happening, and what do you do? Drive DIRECTLY into it, you FIXATE on the danger and never see the escape. You go where you look, and if you don't look at safety you won't ride to it. I've been there, that's a turn, I'm not going too fast, I'm just NOT turning, why can't I turn, wtf, just turn why am I driving straight off the road?!?!? And then I'm off. Instead of looking THROUGH the turn to where I want to go, I saw the roadside as the hazard and my steering followed my DISTRACTED vision right off the road.
The worst part was being aware of it and not being able to correct it. 25 years driving a car and that would never happen, but first 5 miles on a motorcycle, it happened.

We do, it's just easier to correct and, in my case, I've had 25 years of driving to get over it. Probably why I crashed due to target fixation in my first 5 miles on 2 wheels. Just drove off the side of the road on a straightaway, because I kept looking at the side of the road and thinking oh god whatever you do don't drive off the side of the road, don't do it, see that don't hit it, wait, I said NO why are you doing it, skid and crash as I'm going off the side of the road. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, so, don't prophesize
@@RobertMorgan i did think we probably do, but on the track, or "spirited" driving on the road, I cant say I know of an instance where I can say I got target fixation. or as you said, easier to correct. maybe its more forgiving.
Done all the time. But in a car, after the sideswipe/bumper-tap/shoulder-rumble you at least still have half your wheels on pavement and upright while you recover.

Could someone please help me decide with this? I am looking to buy my first bike as an immigrant in Canada. I have driven bikes before in my home country. I am getting a good deal (3000 CAD) on 2003 Honda ST1300 which is driven 97k km and is in good condition. I have heard good things about the bike, although I know it’s a heavy bike. But at this price I cannot find other good buys. What would you guys suggest?? Should I go ahead with it?

Hey , I've been riding for fifty plus years and still watch videos about things I already know , or think I do . I am far from being an expert rider and learn new stuff all the time that directly contradicts things "everybody knew" in the '60s .
Learning about it multiple times and shows that you remember permanently when you ride. And let’s be honest there’s only so much you could do about motorcycles until you’ve kind of explained it all. The next step that Yammi noob could do it if he started visiting the factories that make these items, but it is a huge investment. He might not have the viewer to support all that and pay bills. But as a semi truck driver, I still need to brush up on everything every once in a while, it doesn’t hurt to hear it again. Especially being only on two wheels all it takes is one mistake to potentially change your life forever.
The most important thing to focus on is all of it, that's my experience as a new rider. Because as soon as you ride yourself, you forget all of this, don't you, I know I did. Seems like I do each time. That's why experience and seat time is so important.

@@devilsreject320 well the thing is my cousin owns a cfmoto 450 but to drive them on the GLS (Graduated License Scheme) the bikes need to be LAMS approved so they are considerably limited to only like 61nm of torque with 41KW of power at the highest part of the rev range (thats the limit of the 650) and the bike isnt light either its wet weight is 226 kg i just don't know if that's a good place to start but the main thing pulling me towards it is the price and as a apart of my apprenticeship i have to travel 45 min there and back to the city every three weeks and i plan to take it to work every day when the weather allows because to fill the 19L tank it should only cost about 40-50 dollars (in these prices)
Getting a brand new bike for a first bike isn't best idea. As it takes time to acquire skills just moving them about. Getting on and off putting them on the stand and such.
Small cc bike's are much easier to ride and learn the craft. Can sell trade in when necessary.

Friend spent $95 on a helmet ( full face at least ) felt like a bicycle helmet underneath.. he wont get a bike soon unless something big happens.. did try to advise he should spend maybe a bit more but alas
You only need a helmet if you crash

Guys! So, can you shift down to first gear BEFORE coming to a stop? I thought you had to come to a complete stop? Why is neutral between 1st and 2nd gear? It's kind of a pressure sensitive type action. Start in neutral, shift to 1st, then firmly up shift once at the appropriate speed and you should be in second gear, now if you shift up from 1st too light like half of the full motion you'll be in neutral again and if you are applying throttle like you do when letting out the clutch the rpm's jump up a few thousand and you start loosing momentum and feel a little embarrassed 😅.
You have a clutch, you can stop while in any gear you choose, as long as that clutch is held the transmission is disengaged. With experience, you can stop, sit, and go from a light without ever changing gear, of course the issue is if you forget or slip off the clutch or somesuch happens and you close the clutch, the bike will jerk/takeoff/stall when you're sitting in gear. It's like a manual transmission car.
There's a lot of debate if you should sit at a stop in gear or out on a MT car. When I drove a manual, I was the type to sit at the light, clutch pedal down, in 1st gear, ready to MOVE instantly if I had to.
I have a related question actually, how do I park a sportbike safely on a hill? Obviously try to maneuver to have it pointed downhill, but will it be stable and safe just aimed downhill left in first gear?
What about parking rear tire pointed downhill, will having it parked in gear stop it rolling BACKWARDS?

So many motorcycle riders over react. Sometimes they have plenty of warning, plenty of room to slowdown, switch lanes or stop.
But they go into Karen mode and over exaggerate.
“You almost killed me brah.”
And even when the driver apologizes and shows that it was an honest mistake. For the motorcycle Karen it’s not enough.
“Pay attention next time brah, this is my life brah.”
They keep going and going until the driver says forget this and gets defensive.
The motorcycle Karen then punches the side mirror and speeds off.

I've only used Quadlock with vibration dampener, and it's super solid! I used them while cycling as well.
My bike came with a quad lock mount, so I just got a case for my phone. Zero complaints

Not exactly the type of mistakes to avoid you are adressing here , but seen today at WallyWorld ....big bearded young dude in all the splendor of his wife beater shirt and shiny new leather vest with our local bad boy MC club patches , duck walking his straight piped Harley around the corner at the parking lot stop sign .Of course , he did redeem himself by revving the nuts out of it while waddling . I openly laughed and pointed , fairly secure that at 70ish years old I could outrun him on my Yamaha 250 .
