- Learn how to make your own working shutters that roll. You’ll need a track, the hardware to go with it and also a few shutters. Build them just like ours or come up with your own design. Either way, hopefully this inspires your next project.

Love it! I've been toying with the idea for a couple of years, living in North Alabama, instead of narrow fake shutters.
Having done “barn window” before, we put 3 stoppers at the top rail to prevent left and right exceeding its travel. We also added bottom guides so the barn windows don’t swing
After the hail storms rolled through central Nebraska this spring I am certainly looking at shutters. With the modern Windows if you have a dent in the sash it requires replacement of the entire sash assembly including the glass. On a double pane window for me it figures out about $1,000 a pane (pain!). There is a group of companies in Utah that make barn doors and barn door type shutters and have all the hardware but that stuff is really expensive. However it may be cheaper than what my insurance premiums are going to do to me. Thanks for posting the video it gives me some ideas.

Great idea for hurricane zones! Southern and western facing windows would be nice applications to block out the sun to save energy. A suggestion as you perfect the hardware is to have the metal powder coated for a durable finish. Thank you for posting this video.

I love this! Hubby however, probably won't appreciate ANOTHER project. Great idea. May even try it on barn window. We are in Florida, so hurricane protection is a great idea for us as well.
Thank you. We don’t have that many high wind situations because we are inland about 50 miles, but we recently had tornadoes and it was handy for sure.
I wonder if this would work for insurance purposes in coastal SC? Love the look

Thank you! We love ours. Mainly for looks. We’ve shut them once and it did keep the wind off the windows. I seen your comment on the indoor ones as well. We did those to keep the sun out of the one room at church and they’ve worked great for that purpose.
That is so awesome. I wish I could do that but I don't have enough room on the sides of the window to completely cover the window. I came across this looking for suggestions for DIY functional exterior bifold shutters.

Does it rattle in the wind? I live in a high wind area.
So far ours have a few times, but not bad. You could definitely adapt them to not be able to move back and forth in the wind. When it does, it’s not really loud, it just makes a thud sound occasionally if there’s a lot of wind.
@@TheTrentTribe thanks I think this is a good solution for my place I have some south facing windows that get very hot but don’t want blinds or curtains.
