    The Cold Steel machetes are excellent. I have never had any problems with their 1055 carbon steel! All their throwing knives are world class ...1055 is as tough as it gets. A few models of their swords are great quality and durability, again 1055. Keep up the great work!🤠👍👍🇺🇸🗡🗡🔥

    I snagged CC Kukri Plus and Tanto machetes for $15.00 each. I am convinced that could be the best blade for the price deal in modern history, LOL. CC short machetes are absolute beasts and easily double as short swords, large knives, whatever. This Black Bear Bowie looks awesome.

    At 12:58 min...great explanation of momentum (p) which is the blade mass (m) times the swing velocity (v). p=mv. Also, once the blade impacts the log and velocity goes to zero, you have transferred all swing kinetic energy (KE) to the wood. KE=[mvv]/2. Knife physics...awesome.

    Its fine to carry " only a pocket lamp and a knife", while wielding a mighty although budget Bowie and a Bowie Machete.
    Btw, nothing wrong with 440c, if it has a good heat treat.
    And again you are right, a budget Bowie will do the job as good as an expensive one. The more expensive one will hold an edge longer, depending on the steel, and it may have a better sheet.
    My favorite Cold Steel knife, my old Trail Master in Carbon V, came with a nilon sheet. This sheet still is in verry good condition, after 35 years.
    I have some knives that allready needed the second leather sheet or the sheet needed to be fixed with glue, needle and heavy thread.
    Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed.

    Excellent insightful test analysis,valuable pointers!
    I like how you called out the foolish snobs!
    Based on your test and JoeX's, the only superior aspect that the thicker Bowie knife has is with the blade weight momentum.
    I was surprised to see JoeX break both the Cold Steel Western Bowie and 1917 Bowie knifes blades. However, he could not break the Cold Steel Black Bear Bowie Machete blade!
    Based on that, I will take the Cold Steel Black Bear Bowie and regular Bowie Machete over the more expensive Bowie knives.

    Glad you missed your leg! Day-um, dude... Interesting vid comparisions.. Ive always sworn by original Lynn Thompson Cold Steel products.
    I have read that the "original" Bowie knifes were designed by the Bowie Bros and James Black, their smith in Arkansas- as a fighter- which turned out to be very useful camp/do it all knife.. After the Sandbar situation.. Rezin got together with James Black and designed the knives based on Jim Bowie's input and experience. These days, anything with a longer, clip-pointed blade is a generic "bowie"..
    The steel on that machete bowie is probably very similar to the steel used on the early bowies available to most frontiersman. The closest I have to the early knives, steelwise- is probably an older Western W49... which even so is probably a lot better steel than that available on the frontier back when...
    NOT to denigrate the role of the hawks by frontiersmen of both red and white persuasion. I tend to agree with Robert Heinlein's assessment in "Tunnel In The Sky", that a properly-regulated explorer in primitive conditions needs three knives- a smaller pocket knife, a mid-size general purpose belt knife, and a large blade for heavy work or self defense situations.
    As always ya go with what works for one's self. 🤠

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  Před 2 lety +1

      Black and Musso are both credited for the brass guard knife that was originally thought to be designed by Rezin. We'll never know. As far as the sand bar, they may have found the knife! It was recently discovered. The coffin grips are long gone and the blade is more rust than knife, but the pins in the coffin tang are still there and are a perfect match to Jims blade

    When it comes to digging in the dirt I think I would prefer to use the knife to carve a suitable stick to dig with and use the stick. Why put more wear on your knife blade than you have to? And you can always carve another stick when the first one breaks or wears out.

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  Před 3 lety

      In combat training we learn the importance of a good trenching knife. Carving a stick is going to put more wear on your edge if the dirt is soft. If the terrain is rocky, the stick wont work.
