    If you have a stick shifter, you can pre select the gear. So I shift to 3rd before the throttle blip, that way I can’t miss shift. This is how a dog box works, they can pre load.

      I just got a h pattern and i figured that out within a few hrs. Its weird and not realistic but it work and helps

    • @rolux4853
      @rolux4853 Před 9 měsíci +8

      You cannot preselect in a dogbox.
      A dogbox functions exactly as a normal manual transmission (H pattern and sequentials are both available).
      The only thing that is different that there are no synchronizer rings added to the outside of the gears but the dogs.
      Synchronized gearboxes have lots of little teeth to engage it smoothly with the clutch so you have no pressure of shifting fast or not being able to put in a gear in standstill.
      It’s perfect for daily driving.
      The dogs are just a few with a certain degree so you can engage them much quicker and safer but with the drawbacks I already mentioned.
      There’s is absolutely no way to preselect a gear as you see above.

    • @Pokeyy
      @Pokeyy Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@rolux4853 The effective method is to apply load to the gear lever with your hand and then lift the throttle foot off and back on to the pedal as fast as physically possible. In lifting your foot, the loaded gear lever will almost involuntarily flick to the next gear before the foot is re-applied to the throttle. Of course, it's impossible to pre-load the gear lever without a force-feedback shifter, which I don't think exists. iRacing makes up for this by allowing you to pre-select the next gear, and then when you snap off the throttle it will shift for you.

    • @rolux4853
      @rolux4853 Před 9 měsíci

      @@Pokeyy yes that is correct and sorry I just talked about real life driving and not about iRacing when I tried to roughly explain the dogbox.
      You are absolutely right that the dogbox shifts almost on it’s own if you apply force when it’s still engaged in let’s say 3 and then you slightly lift your right toe and it snaps into gear do much faster than any synchronized transmission ever can and without the need to really guide or push the lever.
      It almost snaps the lever out of your hand.
      If the preloaded force however is not big enough you get the worst grinding noise you ever heard in your life..
      When you speak of iRacing you’re of course absolutely right, you can preselect gears like in more modern semi truck gearboxes (the ones that aren’t self selecting yet, but doing the shifts on their own when rpm and load match the programmed parameters).
      I did this for some time on ovals but it felt just wrong and took the fun out of it.
      I wish there where force feedback shifters easily available on the market.
      If not FFB then just shifters that lock you out of the gate if you want to shift when the conditions don’t allow it.
      I’d be fine with that, don’t even need the gear to be thrown out of the gate, even if it would be a really cool feature.
      I saw some concepts and even sone companies that sold solutions that are connected to a clutch switch, but those aren’t available here in Europe and there weren’t many produces as far as I can remember.

    • @Pokeyy
      @Pokeyy Před 9 měsíci

      @@rolux4853 I’d expect these to be in Europe faster than in NA, as the sim racing market here (to me) seems more high end than in the US. Then again, shifters in general are very overpriced. I’ve got the VNM shifter which is imo the sweet spot.

      @waterfelon they use a standard transmission I believe. Most racecars do not. They use variations of dog box/straight tooth/etc. You can shift a standard transmission without a clutch but it needs to be done so perfectly and has no real value. The reason street cars do not use straight tooth gears is they whine. Like a modern nascar cup car. That noise is the gears spinning

      The only difference is auto clutch will use the clutch for longer than you technically need for it to go into gear (technically you don't need any clutch if you lift off the throttle like he's saying), meaning you're spending more time between gears than you need to. It's not the biggest difference, so if it's comfortable to you, don't worry about it. But if you do want to squeeze out that extra bit of time, practice without auto clutch until you can shift faster than the auto clutch does

      Most modern race cars (and GT/formula) you don’t need the clutch (except to keep from stalling, starting, etc). Pretty much anything with a sequential gearbox has electronics built in that will pretty much do it for you m (I think H pattern cars are the only ones that need it). That’s why most every car (even sports cars) sold in the US all have automatics. The computer will handle that much faster than a human could with their feet. It’s like fly by wire in a fighter jet like the F-16 (or any modern plane)… when you move the stick, it isn’t pulling cables or interacting directly with hydraulic systems like in older planes. It send input to the flight computer, the computer figures out what you want by the stick movement, and then moves the control surfaces (ailerons, flaps, rudder) to give the proper movement.
