    Great video! I opened mine up and cleaned the pitting with a file/sandpaper then soldered the connection I broke in the process. Reinstalled and the electric start works perfectly! (1999 honda foreman 400 owners - be aware there are additional spade like prongs seating the top piece on to the coil, these little posts have copper wire wrapped around them and they will break by wiggling too aggressively to open up - be careful!). Thanks for posting this.

    Relays are an excellent source of wire. I built my first crystal radio in the mid 50's at age 11 using wire from a starter relay for the coil in my tank circuit. Whenever I come across an old relay I toss it in the junk box. It may be needed in a remote switching device or I might just need a few feet of wire for a project.
    Nice video, thanks for sharing.

    Thank you for making videos that are to the point and accurate. So many people make 12 minute videos now and it seems like they just want to hear their own voice for the first 5 minutes. So again, thank you for your videos, you're great at it, please keep it up. Huge help in my limited electronics knowledge

    That was fun. You may be interested to know that the GY6 engine is made here in Taiwan. It is the gold standard of scooter engines. Super design that Honda wanted to buy back from SYM and Kymco who were at the time the same company!! Than for another interesting video.

    Hoping your info will get my kids atv going. Everyone seems confused as to why this atv isn’t starting. The solenoid clicks but won’t engage the starter. I put a brand new solenoid on it and it too clicked but after a bit of a battery charge I did get the starter to turn but then trying it again all I got was a buzz and I fried the solenoid. I still have the old one so I’ll try cleaning the contacts and see what happens. Thanks

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 3 lety

      Can you start the atv using kick start? Sounds like your battery needs to be replaced.

    Nice vid. Do you have any videos on how to test, open & repair the ignition coil on a gy6?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety

      Hi there. Refer to my GY6 video playlist and look for the
      "Troubleshooting GY6 Ignition" video. You will see a blue schooter in the center of the video thumbnail. I explain how to test, by you cannot open it.

  • @gothtechmosh

    could the starter solenoid be the problem with a hard start mine went out

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 6 lety

      If you short the solenoid terminals and the starter works fine, then replace the solenoid.

      Not worth doing. The solenoids are very inexpensive. Thanks for watching!

  • @thersten

    The resistance on mine reads 21ohms, but it does click. Guess that's OK right or should I clean the contacts inside?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety

      thersten Hi there. I have almost 300 videos and cannot remember every test I did on all my videos. If your solenoid winding does not test very similar to mine(as shown in the video), then you have a problem. I have no idea what the contacts look like, you would need to open it up and take a look to determine if the contacts need cleaning.
      Thanks For Watching.

    If the solenoid is going bad would it cause scooter starter to struggle.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety

      Robyn Knowles Not unless the contacts are burned preventing the full flow of current to the starter. You can take a large screwdriver and short the 2 large bolts together on the solenoid to see how it cranks. If it cranks the same, then your solenoid is fine.

    • @robyn31100
      @robyn31100 Před 9 lety

      Thanks, yeah it was the same result. My starter is just weak. I already cleaned it but maybe brushes are going bad

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety

      Highly likely the battery is weak. :-) That is more common. If the scooter kick starts fairly easy, then the starter should crank over just fine. You could have a faulty starter winding, but I would bet the battery is on its way out. Connect the scooter to a car battery using jumper cables and see if it cranks over quickly, then you know the battery is shot.
      BTW, I do have a starter repair video in my GY6 playlist.

    • @robyn31100
      @robyn31100 Před 9 lety

      It was hooked up to jumper cables at the time. I was thinking a loose wire or starter going bad. But battery is only about 2 months old. I think its my starter. The person who I bought it from had the kick start removed. Will see if I can do a small video to show you everything, seems like you know your stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety

      Very simple. Either a weak battery or faulty starter since you stated jumping the bolts on the solenoid made no difference. Up to you to figure it out. :-)

  • @Rus5ell
    @Rus5ell Před 9 lety

    is this likely to happen to a new bike?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety +1

      Russell Morrison Not likely, but the solenoid could be defective.
