One of Tony Blair's election promises in 1997 was to reform the House of Lords, specifically remove the rights of hereditary peers, whose political power has been down from generation to generation. Lord Clifford is utterly incensed that Tony Blair wants to sack him, and the other two thirds of the Lords that earned their right to rule by dint of birth. "It's the history of the family's contribution not only to the nation's heritage, but also to the world," says Lord Clifford in justification. But not all the Lords feel so enraged by the change. Lord Bath spends his time painting portraits of his past lovers, and writing, and is happy to vote away the burden of his 'right to rule'. Lord Colwyn on the other hand has a more balanced view. The practising dentist likes to feel he represents 'Mr Average', and praises the spectrum of professions and walks of life that hereditary peerage brings: "House of Lords throws up a cross section of all kinds of people. Here I am, I'm a dentist, we've got bus drivers, we've got guys who've been in the army, the navy. It throws up a wide cross section of the population.". Yet he also will be voting away the family right to rule. "With my hand on my heart, I can't justify the fact that you can hand on political power." The English aristocracy's great talent for survival may finally have run its course in British politics.

If you come to think of it, they may have rid most of the hereditary peers, but they simply replaced them with more life peers who are chums of the political parties - ex-MPs given life peerages as rewards for their service, or businessmen who donated large sums as a bong. You’d sometimes think that the hereditary peers are way better than these political chums and cronies. The House of Lords simply became a retirement home for career politicians.
Exactly
Still the old system had no place in the 21st century.
That's precisely what Blair wanted.
@@yannick245 Why?
@@yannick245 I disagree, the house of Lords comes from a tradition which went all the way back to the Witans of King Alfred the Great
One day I want to grow up to be a heredity peer
11:21 “Hello, police? I’d like to report a deranged grizzly fellow with a collection of heads mounted to his wall.”
There has to be a balance - the Commons must put up with the Lords, they shouldn't be allowed to get rid of the House of Lords just because they don't agree. And it's a part of our history to keep it so. The hereditary peers should never have been excluded
You must balance the political system
Indeed
The House of Lords must be abolished, if you want to call yourself a democracy.
Fits in with today's contemporary narratives.
You do realize the speech is written by the Prime Minister, the Queen is just reading it, and she does not necessarily agree with it?

Anti Brexit and political correctness gone mad, time to abolish the Lord's.
"It throws up a wide cross-section of entitled rich wankers."
It needs abolishing and making an elected house!!
