There's humility and grace to the Earl of Sandwich. I love the fact he's so honest about what he remembers, thinks and feels. And he's correct about certain important topics being difficult to discuss. Loved this clip.
Well said. I share your sentiments.
Yes, he's humble. Luke also mentioned his mother's achievements at the end - her work / studies dealing with Saudi Arabia and another country... What did she do? They are fascinating, and have so much to add to these vlogs. Golden words. Please include more chats with Luke's parents.
How interesting to hear first hand a little about the experiences of the Earl of Sandwich in the House of Lords - and humbly as well - thank you for sharing from Australia.
@@sandrabergquist1684 - I agree with you 💯 %! I would love to see @Luke @Mapperton have more low key yet, extremely interesting and educational, conversations with Both of his parents. What extraordinary lives they both have lived ♥️♥️
What a wonderful dad you have. As someone else said, he is clearly a genuinely humble man, who has an air of dignity and grace. What a pleasure it is to listen to his thoughts.
He walks with kings, but does not lose the common touch.... Kipling.
Cherish these moments with your father. What a great conversation.
I could listen to your dad all day long. An amazing man.
I love seeing Luke interacting with his father. The Earl of Sandwich is a very interesting man. I would love to see Luke having a chat with his mother as well. The videos she has had on your channel, has shown her to be a charming and intelligent and fascinating woman. I would love to see more of the Earl and Countess of sandwich.
Very enjoyable visit with your charming father. I’m not sure as an American, that I realized before the level of expertise that is needed to contribute to the House of Lords! I would love to see more visits with your father and mother on their expertise and qualifications. They gave so much time to them.
Your dad is such a gentleman. Best wishes to you both.
Brilliant hearing the Earl give us a glimpse into the House of Lords and thoughts on its future, as well as tell of his history as a journalist and continued interest in Nepal, Sudan, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.
Luke, I hope you will have a chance to interview your mother as well in many subjects, among them her interest in the Middle East.
Good health to both, at their own pace, as they navigate their 80’s.
Oh yes, yes, yes! Please give your father and mother a platform to share with us, some of their knowledge and lived wisdom. It has an eager audience here.
The EARL OF SANDWICH is so cool !! He is so nice to share his life with us.
Fascinating to hear the Earl of Sandwich discussing his role in the House of Lords. Thank you
this is such precious footage of your esteemed father. he is so graceful and has so
much humility. he may have had the right to this by noble birth but in his case it was entirely deserved and i’m sure he’s made an impact.
How fascinating (as an American/Canadian) , your father is an exceptional human being. Thanks for sharing 💪🏻❤️
Thanks for watching!
Yes, fascinating man and interview. Thanks to both the Earl and Luke!
I’d love to see an interview with the earl on his work with international development.
I love when his lordship makes an appearance. He has such a warm aura, kinda like everyone's favorite grandfather.
The muniment room will need a computer in the future to make sure generations from now, members of the family can proudly view what wonderful men Luke and his father were. What an exciting bit of history and life to have recorded. Just to be able to hear their voices generations from now.
Thanks for reading from the book. That's a touching poem by Emily Dickinson.
It is wonderful that you have this recorded conversation with your Father to keep and share with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren! He is a remarkable man who bridges the changes historically and can tell us about them. I really appreciate his willingness to share these experiences and insights with us. I am also American/Canadian, so not raised with much understanding of the details of the British Parliament or governing process.
It would be also fascinating to hear about from your Mother’s point of view!
As Julie would say “absolutely brilliant”…loved seeing your dad. Intelligent and compassionate; a great combination.
Listening to and watching his father, it's easy to see and hear how Luke became the wonderful son, husband, and father he himself is. Both are humble, charming men.
Loved listening to the wisdom of lord Sandwich. Such a humble man. Sending great respect.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn about your father and the work of the House of Lords. Please interview your mother. Your father is an inspiring man.
We have a similar Parliamentary system here in Canada. Not surprising since we adopted the British model: House of Commons and the Senate. While not peers, Senators are currently appointed, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. We've been debating the value of an unelected Senate for decades.
yes, having them appointed seems to me, to wonder are they beholden to those in power to keep their jobs then? Are we not better for electing people so they follow what we want and not other Politicians?
@@ridingtheroad185 Elected officials follow the Party line, hence the term "whipping the vote". Oftentimes this means voting the way the Party tells you, not how those who elect you want you to vote.
Thank you for this great privilege, Sirs. I love to listen to your discussions.
I consider it a blessing to the people of Great Britain, that your father is one of the people overseeing these important tasks. I believe that he cares what and how these decisions affect everyone in your country.
The Earl of Sandwich is so incredible. What a wonderful human being so intelligent and gracious…we just love him !Thank you so much for sharing
Love learning from the Earl. An impressive individual. Thx to Luke and the Earl, both.
I enjoy the history and the information about how politics are handled in your country. Always love seeing your dad and a joy to hear him speak on his knowledge. Cudos to all the boards he has sat on! Impressive list!!
Love these father & son chats
Filming your parents is not only entertaining it’s living history.
Your production standards get better with each vlog.
Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Luke, you are a very skilled interviewer! I very much enjoyed hearing your father's answers to the questions, and I learned a couple things.
Many thanks to your Dad and his service.
Fantastic
Such a well spoken gentleman your dad. Thank you for sharing.
As an American this was fascinating! I love anytime your dad is on.
What a wonderful man your Dad is.
I have been watching for awhile now and I found this extremely interesting. The Earl of Sandwich is a fantastic example of items we are all losing today. As an American who was in local politics for 14 years it is amazing to hear the Earl talk about the politics between the two and he is quite correct! We have a saying “to pick someone’s brain” , the knowledge in the Earls head should come out. These conversations are priceless!
Fascinating and candid conversation. I truly love hearing his stories.
What a wonderful man you have for a father. Grace humility and intelligence.♥️
Wonderful episode, also loved the poem
The Earl is a fascinating man. Thank you for sharing his insights.
As an American I don't know much about the House of Lords. Thank you for sharing this interview.
Two really lovely gentlemen.
What a wonderful talk with your father. He is such a humble man who has contributed so very much. I would love to hear from you mother as well! The Montague men married well! ♥️
Very interesting! As an american, I enjoy learning about how things work in the UK.
Absolutely fascinating hearing how the house is comprised of expertise not politicians only. I would also be fascinating to hear about your mothers background as the Middle East is a fascinating subject. Thank you for the insight into a contentious topic for your country.
Lovely interview with your father. Great job. It was filled with much underlying importance. Wishing familiar success for Luke and his sons.
I enjoyed listening to your dad, it was all very informative. The Earl of Sandwich is such a lovely humble person, very knowledgeable. I would like to hear you talking with your mum and hear of her experiences.
I didn't realize that the Earl had such a interesting, and informative, background.
Most valuable episode! My favorite, thank you! So important and rare, at least as an American, to hear the views and experiences of a member of the House of Lords...and through conversation with a family member. Very dear to see and greatly appreciated! I love knowing some of the extremely important human rights issues he cared about and worked to improve. I hope you do another one! Maybe one or two with your mother as well, on her expertise mentioned here. Thanks again so much!
What a lovely interview, such a nice man the Earl of Sandwich...Please do more interviews with your parents Luke
I'm here too from Baltimore Maryland, USA 🇺🇸
A very lovely and informative conversation with this very special man.
Thank you Luke for this interview and for asking the best thoughtful questions, and thanks to your dad for explaining everything so wonderfully. People need to hear this, to get the real story about the House of Lords, what its purpose is and what the lords do. I think it’s a very good thing to have non-political, more expert input on legislation that gets suggested, prepared, and put in place. This has been very educational to hear.
Thank you for sharing. As an U.S. citizen, I had been wondering, and researched a bit, how the House of Lords operated. I knew it had been re-worked but did not quite understand how. I appreciate the clarity you provided and and thank the Earl of Sandwich for your service.
This was the best Mapperton Live. As others have written, your father is a true gentleman, someone we all should aspire to be like. Please interview him more. Your mother should be interviewed too. You said she is an expert on the Middle East.
Please interview your parents more. They are a treasure!
Thank you for this insight into the House of Lords. As an American with British ancestry I find it fascinating.
This was great!very interesting! The Earl is very charming and well spoken. I like that he wishes his wife could have have the same experience! ❤
@Luke - I’ve said this before but, your Father is truly the epitome of what a true Gentleman should be.
The Earl has humility, kindness and eloquence. All of these attributes sparkle ✨ with grace.
Thank him for contributing to the lovely creation of @Mapperton Live ♥️
Your father seems like a very impressive, yet humble man. Thank you for this insight into a system I as an American know very little about.
This was fascinating, to learn more about the causes the Earl was involved with. The Earl is modest and unassuming.
What a fascinating topic and remarkable, accomplished , humble and inspiring man your father is, and worthy of his esteemed position. I can see the pride, respect and warmth that you have for your father Luke. Family is to be treasured in life and I always admire the way you and Julie do that in the way you talk about and to your family.
Absolutely loved this interview with your father and his discussion on the changes made to the House of Lords. I plan not only to watch it again, but share it with future students in any polisci course I teach as part of the comparison between the US Senate and the House of Lords.
As much as I enjoy to follow you and Julie on your life's adventures, I just absolutely love when the Earl and Countess share their memories, good spirits and knowledge 😘❤️🇩🇰
The Earl is such a humble, quietly spoken man, such a gentleman. You are very fortunate to have such a man as your dad. I would like to see more of him and the Countess. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Lovely way to inform folks. Beautiful content
As a long time American I'm somewhat envious of the system the Earl describes. Of course it isn't perfect, and might require more tweaking than it has had for a while, but from where I'm sitting (in California, the only home I've ever known) I can see where there are many advantages over the way we are doing things, time and time again. He is so very interesting.
As a Brit, I've always been a supporter of an hereditary House of Lords. For, I imagine, many of the reasons you in California might want a different system. Jockeying for power, status and money was not a key feature of the hereditary Lords which meant that they had more time and energy to use their expertise and wisdom as self-funded large landowners/employers and, like the Earl, as relevant experts in their own right. Mine is a very contentious view of course in our rather blinkered political and social climate now. But many of our Peers work very hard for relatively small honoraria.
@@iggle6448 Indeed, I do see what you're saying.
@@silva7493 👍
@@iggle6448 I totally agree with you.I have a copy of the Country Life book 'Inside the House of Loeds.Published in 1998.It tells of all the expertise the Lords had
@@davidknowles3459 Thank you for that reference, I'll have to look out for it. It's such a pity that, bit by bit, all the good and very useful elements of our nation are being dismantled (quite literally in the case of the HoL!)
This was quite interesting. Being an American, a lot was new information on how it all works. Thanks to the Earl of Sandwich for being willing to discuss.
This was fascinating. I admire the Earl. I loved hearing about his role in the House of Lords.
Very much enjoyed this episode. I was not aware that there are 92 Lords now and voted in. Love the work the Earl has done with aid groups.
Glad that you are getting this interview with your dad recorded. Hope to see more of these interviews with your dad and mom.
So wonderful to see your Dad again. Very interesting to hear about the House of Lords. I hope we get to see your Mom again soon. Always enjoyed her garden tours.
It is always a Great Privilege to hear
"The Earl of Sandwich," Talk, &. Share his Thoughts &. Memories.😌
The Earl of Sandwich is an extraordinary man! It was such a privilege to watch this conversation and learn of the many meaningful things he has done with his life. Hearing the organizations with which he has worked demonstrates what’s been important to him. I am sure that he has been a blessing to the House of Lords and to the organizations with which he has worked. Thank you so much for this video. It has been very special to watch. Love From Vermont
Luke and Lord Montagu, I honestly can’t thank you enough for this conversation. I love the interaction and the relationship between the two of you and I would enjoy seeing more of these conversations between father and son. Thank you for sharing your lives with us and educating us along the way. Blessings to you both.
Thank you both for this wonderful conversation. Very interesting and informative and also many thanks to the Earl for his service in the Lords. After the last 6+ years of political turmoil in the USA, I’d say our system is in a mess - it’s not holding up as well as the parliamentary system unfortunately.
What a wonderful dad you have Luke. Cherish every moment you have with your parents. The Earl is a insightful man and we all could learn so much about your family and country from him. Thank you both for such a wonderful conversation.👏🏻💕
Someday, perhaps consider showing us some of the ancient carved, as I understand it, roadside stones of Dorsett?
As an American I have very little knowledge about the House of Lords, so this visit with your dad is extremely interesting. You mentioned that this was his career which makes me wonder if the Lords are paid. I really had no idea that the Lords worked so hard and were so involved with local and world issues. Is this just the 92 (don't really understand what that is about) or all the Lords? Thank you so much for sharing with us and I thank you for a better understanding of what an amazing man your father is, hope he continues to be healthy and involved.
Your Father is a true gentleman.
Thank you for the honour of listening to a leader with humility and intelligence and a careful listener.
Best to your entire Family .
Thank you Luke for the insight from the Earl about the House of Lords. Even though we have our own two house system based on the British Westminster system, it gives me a better understanding of why we have it. Please thank the Earl for me and he really is a very interesting man.
Cheers from the Colony of Australia!!
being from the states this was a great lesson in how things work there
Thank you. I learned much from this interview. I did not know what the House of Lords role was in your government. Yes, my American governments gridlock is quite frustrating!
Thank you so much for this interview. Not being British, I've always wondered how this system worked. The Earl of Sandwich is such a wise and humble gentleman. What an honor to have him serving your nation, and to have him as your father. If he ever makes it to Jerusalem for work, I would love to shake his hand.
Wonderful interview. Thank you both very much.
Thank you for sharing such great wisdom from the Earl with all of us. We love seeing him and the Countess and enjoy all their knowledge and grace.
Fascinating, many thanks for sharing this conversation with the world!!
Thanks very much for this video. Beyond the story of his personal experience he shows kindness and insight, delivered with grace.
Very fascinating.
What a wonderful episode!
Your father is a treasure.
I think the house of Lords is needed because I think it is unwise to let one body have the monopoly on decision making. It acts as a safety net,an extra layer of debate before things become final. Also it allows discussion without the egotistic posturing for the cameras that has been so detrimental in recent years.
It was lovely hearing the Earl of S explaining how the house works without any pomposity or undue pride.
Thank you for sharing, very interesting. I find the access we get to the house and your family very unique! Important history
Thank the Earl for sharing with us. That was a very interesting topic.
Wonderful interview! Thanks so much.
I love every single video featuring The Earle of Sandwich ❤❤❤
I really enjoyed this discussion. The Earl seems to be such a remarkable man! Thank you both for your time.
Would be VERY interested in learning more about your Father’s qualifications/knowledge! Enjoyed this discussion!
I wish the humble work ethos and integrity of the Earls generation were still common place! The Earl is a shining example of purpose and gracious ethics!
This would be great as a podcast. Luke and his Father chatting.
Loved this video. Luke, your father is so bright and his conversation and sentiments at the end were truly a nod to his passion and love for life!!
Luke, that was absolutely wonderful. It's so interesting to see how another form of government works. I do remember when the House of Lords was pared down but never understood exactly how it worked, well, still don't understand all of it. I would have been interested in hearing how he came to be interested in human rights. Was it something from childhood or an event in his early years. Certainly hope you'll do something like this with your mother.
I'm guessing when he talks about 'the government' he means the party in power. I kind of understand 'cross benchers' but what happens when the party he represents is in power. He wouldn't be a 'cross bencher' then would he.
Thanks so much for this. It's great to see your dad again and best of health to him.
