    We have a similar Parliamentary system here in Canada. Not surprising since we adopted the British model: House of Commons and the Senate. While not peers, Senators are currently appointed, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. We've been debating the value of an unelected Senate for decades.

      @ridingtheroad185 Před rokem +2

Of course it isn't perfect, and might require more tweaking than it has had for a while, but from where I'm sitting (in California, the only home I've ever known) I can see where there are many advantages over the way we are doing things, time and time again. He is so very interesting.

      As a Brit, I've always been a supporter of an hereditary House of Lords. For, I imagine, many of the reasons you in California might want a different system. Jockeying for power, status and money was not a key feature of the hereditary Lords which meant that they had more time and energy to use their expertise and wisdom as self-funded large landowners/employers and, like the Earl, as relevant experts in their own right. Mine is a very contentious view of course in our rather blinkered political and social climate now. But many of our Peers work very hard for relatively small honoraria.

It acts as a safety net,an extra layer of debate before things become final. Also it allows discussion without the egotistic posturing for the cameras that has been so detrimental in recent years.

    I wish the humble work ethos and integrity of the Earls generation were still common place! The Earl is a shining example of purpose and gracious ethics!

    Luke, that was absolutely wonderful. It's so interesting to see how another form of government works. I do remember when the House of Lords was pared down but never understood exactly how it worked, well, still don't understand all of it. I would have been interested in hearing how he came to be interested in human rights. Was it something from childhood or an event in his early years. Certainly hope you'll do something like this with your mother.
    I'm guessing when he talks about 'the government' he means the party in power. I kind of understand 'cross benchers' but what happens when the party he represents is in power. He wouldn't be a 'cross bencher' then would he.
    Thanks so much for this. It's great to see your dad again and best of health to him.
