Then they continued to the kitchen and there he was cooking away. I loved that running gag!

    I realize SMFR absorbed the old Cunningham district in 2018 but I still don't understand why 21 remains a South Metro station. It's this little secluded island in metro Denver, surrounded on three sides by DFD territory and Aurora Fire on the fourth, completely cut off from the rest of the district. Indeed, Aurora 11 is literally one mile east of 21s and usually runs 2nd sue on most of 21's working calls. The 2-alarm multi-family on S. Quebec Way this past Friday (15 April 2022) is the perfect example: It wound up being DFD's turf but the first-due was 21s, with Aurora 11 also arriving well before DFD Engine 13. Not only that but SMFR District 1 filled the card for a full working response for a fire that wasn't even the department's responsibility, which left other areas of the district vulnerable when assets were allocated to this fire.
    Don't get me wrong--all three agencies did an outstanding job to contain a fire that could've easily and quickly gotten out of hand, what with the wind conditions that day (maybe it helped having seven(!) white helmets from two different departments on the fire ground) but, to be blunt, SMFR shouldn't have been involved in anything more than a mutual aid capacity, and if that little island where 21s sits wasn't part of South Metro's district--if it were instead part of either Aurora or DFD--that would've been the case. All told, South Metro dispatched 7 structural pieces (though Tower 18 was cancelled en route) and DFD sent 14, plus Aurora Engine 11. Not saying that's overkill but probably more than SMFR needed to allocate.
    Maybe SMFR and Denver can discuss realigning their territories, and even draw West Metro into the discussion since they have a similar situation with their Station 15 down in Roxborough Park, in what should be SMFR's district. You get that station, Denver gets your 21, and West Metro gets Denver's Station 30 in Marston. All three districts' territories then make more sense, the residents of each still get outstanding service and everybody lives happily ever after.

    • @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
      @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO  Před 2 lety +2

      Station 21 protects 3.6 square miles of unincorporated Arapahoe County where original residents did not want to be part of Aurora or Denver. If South Metro wanted to forfeit that geographic area to Aurora Fire Rescue or Denver Fire Department, the 3.6 square miles would either need to be annexed into one of the cities or fall under a paid contract for service, assuming Aurora or Denver would be interested in such an arrangement. Those residents would also have a change in EMS and rely on Denver Paramedics or Falck Ambulance, and likely wouldn't have 2 dedicated Paramedic transport ambulances like they do with South Metro. Ultimately there would need to be community agreement and perhaps even a vote / changes to the tax structure. For those reasons, trading district territory is very complicated. Automatic aid agreements between Aurora and South Metro certainly help with area coverage, but Denver does not have automatic aid agreements with any neighboring fire districts. Mutual aid can be requested and requires approval from a chief officer.
      Regarding the S. Quebec Way incident on April 15, 2022, multiple callers reported the fire at different addresses, both in Denver and Arapahoe County. Since some callers provided an address in South Metro's jurisdiction and smoke was visible from miles away, DC1 upgraded the SMFR response to confirmed. SMFR Engine 21 and Medic 21 were the first units to arrive, they discovered the main fire building was located in the City of Denver at 1885 S. Quebec Way. Fire from the main fire building extended into and destroyed the Charlie 1 exposure located at 1891 S. Quebec Way (in South Metro) and extended into vehicles located at 1970 S. Valentia St. (also in South Metro). With fire involving one structure in Denver, one structure and two properties in South Metro's area of responsibility, SMFR maintained a full response until unified command made an updated resource determination.
      A three-way switch between West Metro 15, South Metro 21 and Denver 30 is easier said than done legally / contractually, but in concept it does make sense. The easiest solution for everyone involved would be an automatic aid agreement like South Metro and West Metro have, which now includes GPS based closest unit dispatching.
      Hopefully that answers your great questions, please let us know if you have more!

      @franklewis6943 Před 2 lety

      @@SouthMetroFireRescuePIOLike every other division of the department, SMFR's communication/PIO team is top-notch. A big thank you to Kristen, Eric, Connor and the entire PIO staff for your detailed reply.
      The description of the Quebec incident was especially informative. Since I'm not familiar with the location, I wasn't aware that the incident literally occurred on the border between DFD and SMFR's districts. With that in mind, District 1's decision to upgrade the South Metro response makes much more sense now. At the same time, it also reinforces my original point--This 3.6 mi² shouldn't be SMFR's responsibility to begin with, and incidents like this illustrate why. But that's what the tax-paying residents within want, so I'll shut up about it. You do make a good argument about the availability of having 2 ALS ambulances dedicated to covering that territory--as opposed to DFD providing only BLS, with Denver Health providing transport and ALS care; and Aurora staffing EMT-Ps on all their frontline apparatus but contracting Falck for transport--and I've argued for years the advantages of fire department-based EMS, but to be fair, 21 runs two ambulances _because_ they're isolated from the rest of the district; when the next available ambulance in the district is 7 miles away (at 31s and 32s), you can't afford to have a single unit out of service.
      Lastly, about the headaches associated with selling voters on the benefits of redistricting: I get it. I started my firefighting career in St. Louis County, where there are 43 different fire departments/fire protection districts. covering (or not) 7000+ mi², and not including the city fire department, because the city and the county are entirely separate entities and mostly don't want anything to do with one another. In St. Louis County, *_every_* working call requires mutual aid because no single department (except the city) has the individual resources to fill even a first-alarm card. By comparison, the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA encompasses 8,344 mi², and is served by 15 agencies. My point is, the professionals in the Denver area have figured out how to convince voters in the districts they serve that redistricting and/or consolidation is a good idea, something that at worst provides the service they expect and maybe for a few bucks less, or better service for only a few bucks more. I picked those three stations because it seems to me that it would be an easy sell if you clearly spelled out the advantages to the stakeholders in question.
      Once again, thanks for indulging me, and keep up the good work.

  • @QemeH
    @QemeH Před 3 lety +10

    It's really interesting to me how sometimes the little things form an entire culture in a specific station. Like here, where they built on this idea of being an "island" and being on their own a lot - when in reality they are in the middle of Denver suburbs and the next unit is about 5 to 7 minutes over just like everywhere else, it's just not a unit from their own departement. So the entire island thing is more a culture thing than any real impact to or from emergencies.

    • @Autofleet4429
      @Autofleet4429 Před rokem

      It is effectively a island, of the two neighbouring districts, Denver Fire Department doesn’t have a Automatic-Aid agreement with SMFR (or anyone for that matter) and Aurora Fire Rescue they only have Automatic-Aid specifically for Station-11 only, any other non-SMFR stations are Mutual-Aid only and would require SMFR dispatch to physically call up the respective dispatches and request specifically which stations/units they require and then their dispatches would need to call the Tour-Commander (or other designated officer) and they would need to approve the request, then their dispatch can tone-out the requested units, the time it takes to do that when compared to dispatching other SMFR units is minor, SMFR generally only requests either DFD or AFR (excluding AUE11 which is Automatic as described above) when a second alarm is struck or when SMFR units are stretched thin and the response times are longer.
      A typical working structure fire response for a standard residential fire in 21’s area would typically consist of.
      Initial reported fire response
      E21, AUE11, T32, M21/211, BC5, SAF35/18
      Working fire response
      E22, E31/38, M211/21, BC3, MED1/2 + PIOs, Fire Investigators, Rehab etc.

    I know you have the engine and I am going to guess there’s not many tall buildings around that area since there was not a tower and from what he said seems like they would have one out there, even just housing it as a reserve that if needed they could use.

    • @Spitfire8520
      @Spitfire8520 Před 3 lety

      Station 21's area has many 3+ story buildings due to a high density of multi-family and commercial structures and the area sees a lot of aerial work when there is a fire. I cannot speak for South Metro on their exact choices, but the goal is to control the fire as quickly to minimize the spread and damage which an engine is better at. If the fire has reached the point where they need to use an aerial, then the building is almost certainly already lost. As the saying in fire service goes, "when the ladder goes up, the building comes down."

    • @EricWhiteTheGamer
      @EricWhiteTheGamer Před 3 lety

      @@Spitfire8520 personally I’d say switch the engine to an ariel (all of SMFR ladder and towers are quad so they have engine capabilities as well). Because there are 7 days of the week, it will take 7 weeks until the shifts work the those same days of the week again.

      @@burgerfatty I know you're being snarky, but just because a department is big doesn't mean it's career. Consider Boone County (MO) FPD: Covers a territory of roughly 500 square miles out of 15 stations with 200 (give or take) firefighters--ALL of them volunteers. They're also the host department for FEMA MO-TF1. Or, Montgomery County (MD) Fire & Rescue Service: Though officially a combination department, nearly all of the 42 independent fire companies under their umbrella are staffed--24/7--by over 2000 volunteers. Oh, and MCFRD also hosts Maryland's regional FEMA USAR task force--MD-TF1.

    At first it may look like a single story house, but it may be a 2-story firehouse.

    For anyone saying that the closest station is really only 7 minutes away no really it’s not... Station 38 is about 25 minutes away and station 31 is about 19 minutes away and station 22 Google Maps could not find a route to give a time and now I can’t get a time for station 38 buts it’s somewhere in the 20s.

      The closest station that would respond to assist would be Aurora Station 11 which is only a mile down the road and a drive time of 3 minutes. There is a call transfer delay of 2-3 minutes, but they would still arrive before any of the other South Metro fire suppression units.
