Rhythm Roulette: Thes One | Mass Appeal

- For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal headed to the studio with Thes One.
As part of the beloved west coast duo, People Under The Stairs, Thes One was responsible for some some of the underground hip hop's smoothest Cali vibes.
Thes One walks out of the record shop with Orquesta Conexion Latina, Joanna Gardner's self-titled album, and the Modern Jazz Quartet's The Sheriff. He gets right to work with his notepad and equipment, ripping various parts of Joanna's songs for the ultimate lounge music creation. He didn't expect to find anything on the "shitty" record but found the drums and melody strictly from Ms. Gardner. Thes One set out to only use parts of the records for his beat (no added outside drums) and he prevailed. Watch him craft your next morning-routine theme song above.

One of the greatest groups ever! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 RIP Double K!
He will be missed
Thes One is literally the West Coast's best kept secret. One of the greatest producers I've ever heard...
Sadly he just retired.
*Hiphops
@@13lood13ath ??? The new ish is dope!!!
PUTS for life
B+ is Ireland's best kept secret - and oh look there he is creepin' in the back
This guy, Madlib, Dilla, Kankick.. basically everyone that kept the real shit alive but also adding new elements to the game in the early to mid 00's. The reason why I make beats. Much love to People Under The Stairs.
People Under The Stairs are hella underrated.
word up
underrated is an understatement when talking about puts
west coast underground legends forsure
True indeed. Thes One is a legend in the L.A. scene!
Most definitely
One of the few who used ONLY the records. Respect
and that's the way it should be. :)
can add Carmack to that list
Yea I don't know why he was complaining about the records. He obviously knows how to flip a beat proper.
That notepad at 2:56 gives a good idea of how dedicated these legends are to the craft! All hard work
I've never been star struck in my entire life until I saw Thes One and Double K slamming beers across from me at the Bar, then to watch them perform in the most intimate venue I could ever ask to see them live. A dream come true, changed my life.
You lucked out, man. Happy for you! Not seeing them live while Mike was around is one of those regrets I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
@@polaroidsky was taken too early man
Met PUTS a looong time ago, in 1999, they were outside the venue of their own concert pretending to be security. I recognised them immediately but no-one else did haha. Love their music and Thes One is a very underrated producer.
Funniest dudes in hip hop !
Thes One’s ability to produce gold out of basically any music is absolutely mind blowing. PUTS lives forever. Rest In Peace Mike ❤.
w o r d
One of the best in the whole series. The beat was fire.
This was the best rythm roulette by far. Thes one is a genius!
rest in beats Double K
This fucking dude DOES NOT get enough credit. Maybe it’s me being selfish that I’m glad he isn’t mainstream and commercially unknown. Anyway, been listening to PUTS since ‘99, and they never disappoint. Respect to Thes One
that studio tho!!!!
Thes one built it himself!
Best set up I've seen so far in the series
It's a-ight.
No. Shit is nice!
back to some fucking boom bap....about damn time
Thes One & Johnny J are my 2 favorite west coast Latino producers. Would had been such a blessing to see them work together on something. R.I.P. Johnny J
Who remembers Thes One destroying Will I Am in that beat battle a couple of years ago? Lmaoo I still remember how salty Will I am was towards the end
I remember it was two different styles but I loved thes one . Hands down
Will was hella salty after Thes first track cause Will came in week with that computer wack shit excuse for a hip hop beat.
I GOT IT ON DVD!!!
@@djmontyforyou please upload it, that’s gold hahaha
That beat sound like Los Angeles. Respect Thes One
Thes One, your beats are always chill & on point. 10/10.
"I live an analog lifestyle sometimes it's wild." One of my favorite's, thanks for putting this up.
"with soul in our ears, we hear loops they cant"
He killed this one! So smooth....
one of the most underrated producers and mcs period in hip hop I've said that for years love people under the stairs wish there records were easier and cheaper to find :(
💯
Their sound was so timeless.. It's like they shaped what the 90s would've been if it continued what was going on in the 80s
you mean, what the 2000s would have been if it were a continuation of the mid nineties
colenbrak I think people give too much credit to the 90s for being feelgood though.. by then everyone was on their own agenda! The 80s was about moving the crowd and bringing the party to the music, which is People Under the Stairs to me
cotathemc ah i see, i thought you meant sonically
THES ONE DOES IT AGAIN...Always a pleasure watching talented artists create something from absolutely nothing. Dope track.
I like how he doesn't talk as he goes along and just focuses on what he is doing
this guy was a huge influence on me back in the day. And he's still got it
Thes One is so dope super underrated !! First concert I ever went too was a PUTS concert & their energy is amazing! much love
People under the stairs never cared about the fame they just love what they do I love them
Top 5 episode no fuggin DOUBT!
If you know, you know... this level of chopping, filtering, layering, etc. only comes with years of experience and a one-in-a-million ear like Thes One's. Salute to one of the greatest ever!
Rest in peace Double K!
Thes One since day one. Stayed true to his sound always. Much love. Rip KK
YESSSS, PUTS is one of the greatest west coast underground groups of all time
💯
Yessir!
One of the best hip hop groups period
^Now that's what I'm sayyyynnn
stylezNout hello. I was like #100. Thank you for your time.
That 3000 is sexy as hell. Chill beat too
It really is lol
Just amazing. Nothing can beat the feel of an old, used MPC!
Lusting over that outboard rack
+Gino Boomino warm sound from hot signals!
Didnt they custom make that?
Damn, Thes One is so underrated that even his Rhythm Roulette is one the most underrated of all !
The best one IMO !
RIP Double K! 🙏
Rest Up!!!!
THEEE most " top shelf " studio to date for the Rhythm roulette series .... man that shits stacked !!!1
So smooth, classic, he is the man fosho!
so happy you guys picked Thes One, he's a great performer too
one of my favorite producers
Absolute king & TOP dude!!! Thes one- man is ILL!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thats what I'm talking about! I love so many producers y'all have, but so happy to see thes one! And of course this dood makes maybe the most fire ass beat of the whole series.
Too underrated!
Peru represent! proud of you Thes!
shows why he's one of the greats out of Cali
His studio is SICK!!! The beat he came up with is pretty nice as well!
one of my fav beats to come out of this series. man is next level
Incredible. Saw them in Portland 2002. RESPECT.
You guys need to make an album with all the best beats on there. Let everyone vote for their favourite ones.
Thes is the best & the reason why I make beats . Love from Austin Tx
PUTS forever
R.I.P. Double K , the realest & most humble rap cat I ever met
He killed this, we need to start hearing artists spittin on these beats though, could definitely hear DOOM on this beat
Yo thought exactly the same
I can hear Curren$y on this one too
Nah im cool without any rappers on it. Beat is killer by itself.
+tDames of The WerkHeads thats what I was thinking
9th wonder had rhapsody rap on his iirc
one of the best producers.
Low key a classic
I love this guys brain and how he thinks about beats, reminds me alot like qtip from tribe. Awesome producer/MC!!
He sure lucked out on that Joanna Gardner album, you cannot overlook 80s soul.
The best turntable/cart set up in Rhythm Roulette to date, a record clamp, ortofon headshell and an ortofon 2M Red, respect! I am shocked at how many producers have such abysmal sampling set ups in RR.
I'm just learning about how making/producing beats is done. So, getting to see artists being challenged out of their comfort zone to make something fresh and just sound great is fun to watch.
Wow thes is simply amazing this is the best Rhythm Roulette
that sample 2:55 :)
Shoutout Game you da man
he's here!!!
dude you also here #BusyWorkxBeats.com
You listen to Knxledge new stuff? Any chance you can make an EarlxKnx beat like 'Balance'?
yung busy works in the comments
Been waiting for Oddisee, but thes one is dope as hell too
I knew that 80s joint was gonna have the gems.
I'm not ashamed to say I just found PUTS. So glad I did, crazy talented..
so Dope, love smooth beats
DOOM would put this track in shambles
Hands down the greatest producer in a hot minute!
that's actually pretty good. everybody is able to make a hot beat using one soul record an chop it, like for example 9th wonder did on rhyhtm roulette (dunno why is considered one of the best episodes, no disrispect), but using ALL the records and combine ALL the samples picked up to make one beat is pretty damn hard, and he, like on the other hand marco polo (the best episode so far in imho) did it well.
9th Wonder episode is really overrated. Thes One is ten times the producer 9th is IMO.
Really?? U got to be crazy!!
I feel the same way! Marco even sampled the drums and bass from the shitty records he picked. Nobody else did that. They all instantly went to their own sound library for drums and bass, like 9th Wonder.
Marco Polo and Black Milk are my two favourite episodes, because turning garbage records into heat is for me the most impressive thing you can do with sampling. That's also why I think Rhythm Roulette should be strictly dollar bin records, not like the newest Sharon Jones album or a Daft Punk compilation...
Actually Thes One only used one record. He said so himself, which I think is quite impressive. He made a beat only with the Joanna Gardner record.
Theres a bonus DVD in a 'People Under the Stairs' album "Step Father" where Thes shows you how to make a beat on the MPC... That's where I learned the "Filter Bass trick"... It was the most inspiring tip for a young beat maker... I got to tell Thes how much that helped me out one night at a PUTS show... Such a good dude!!!
one of the greatest of all time
Some of my favourite Thes one beats.
The baron
Hy-vee
Target
Northwestern bell 2
I've been watching these rhythm roulettes for a couple of months, and was waiting for thes one to do this! people under the stairs are my all time favorite!
never heard a producer say they avoid sampling jazz! one of my fav genres to sample.
To be fair Jazz samples was more of a east coast thing in Hip-Hop especially the 90s and early 2000s.
I put Thes right next to El-P as two of the most groundbreaking and influential producers of all time. Big props to Mass Appeal for finally putting Thes on.
One day I hope to get down like this dude.
Thes One! A grandmaster at work!
What a G! That the real! No other samples, sounds, or synths.
sick! rhythm roulette really gives inspiration to other producers!
GOAT. That beat is nails.
He made one of the best beats
I’ve ever heard after saying he picked out the worst records possible
Saw People Under The Stairs in the early 2000's in Detroit with Jurassic 5 and have been a fan ever since. Sick beat.
Happy Heavenly Birthday Double K✊🏿😢🙌🏿
Thes studio is crazy 👀
Thes: "pulled three terrible albums...let's see what I can salvage from the rubble..."
End result: classic beat.
The best Rhythm Roulette episode and the beat.
i used to be play one of his instrumental albums a lot some years ago. it had this tune sampling "the choice is up to you, its up to you". absolutely loved it.
I absolutely miss these kinda videos ! :'( :'(
I love this beat he cooked up
this man one of the best.... throughout the years! expression of soul
I always come back to see and hear this. I love listening to it. Killer beat.

Amazing work. A true Rhytm Roulette and love for tha Music. Thx
Can you make an instrumental album with the best rhythm roulette beats??
Bro that would be great, I'd buy it
it'd be a nightmare for sample clearing
HAHAHAHAH
Couldn't they release a free mixtape, so they wouldn't have to pay samples?
Ocean Sage you still gotta pay it. a small producer like me would have no problems, but this channel has a few subscribers eh.
I keep coming back to this video. best rhythm roulette thus far. Thes PLEASE do something with this beat!
he put the beat on Soundcloud
Thanks for the heads up!
the illest studio Thes built from scratch in his garage!!
2:57-3:10 Joann Gardner voice and how he filter her voice 🔥🔥🔥
Definitely in my top 5. Thes you the man bro ✌
Acid Rain drops is my joint.. people under the stairs.. real hip hop
Clicked on it with the Flash Gordon quickness. Fuckin love People Under The Stairs, fam
Thes had a beat battle with Exile once upon a time.. Let that marinate. Classic battle i might add✊🏾
So dope! We need a tape of those Rhythm Roulette
Best episode of rhythm roulette, and the best beat !!! P.U.T.S !!!!!
That actually felt like something thes one would've done back a few years ago!!! Definitely sick with it... I love those vibes
F I N A L L Y !
Thank you Mass Appeal.
