Anyone who says Cinderella is sexist is just not very smart. Her goals and dreams were not to go marry a prince. She wasn't looking to get married to a prince and then all her dreams would come true. All she wanted to do was go to the ball. She had no intentions of falling in love with a prince there. All she wanted was one night away from her horrid life. Coincidently, she ended up falling in love with the prince and that ultimately took her away from her old life. There is nothing in that plot that is sexist. Fight me.
Its not exactly sexist, its just not empowering to women, she didn't attempt to do anything to get her way. She could've pushed down her stepmother and stepsisters and delivered herself to the ball. Instead, still being a pushover, she stayed home and cried until her godmother fixed all her problems for her. People may say its sexist because she stays this way throughout the movie and proves that the only good attribute to have as a girl is being kind. Well I mean, I guess you could say she's kind to the animals but can that really get you anywhere? They also incorporate the fact that she's a beautiful, skinny, blonde woman; a trait desirable for most. What people draw from this is that in order to land good fortune (like how the prince fell for and married Cinderella), you must be beautiful, blonde and skinny. At the time, Cinderella's looks didn't matter so much to viewers. Its the whole she's-a-kindhearted-princess-who-gets-a-happy-ending charm that makes her so appealing. Disney can make any character look attractive. But in this day and age, people want their daughters and sons to know that you don't have to look like the 1950 cartoon expectation to have a happy ending.
I'd love to see one of these on Fantasia - it's by far his most experimental of his earliest films - really showed how way back in the day he was focused on making high art and not just entertainment.
It's weird because as a child I never really felt much connection with Cinderella but as of now she's one of my favourite disney princesses. Plus I always viewed the whole finding her true love in the Prince less of a "The Prince saved her" and much more along the lines of "if you're kind and good you'll attract kind and good people to you, and you'll get good things and what you deserve for being a good person" sort of thing. I always like to think of Disney princesses in terms of their actions and not really the actions of those around them, if that makes sense?
CInderella will always be my favorite Disney movie. Peter Pan comes a close second though, lol. The story, the music, and the animation is so classic, I never thought it was boring, in m opinion Snow White was slightly more boring! But I used to watch this movie almost every single day throughout my childhood, and it reminds me of when I was a little girl, and memories of just pure happiness when watching it.
This is literally my favourite series on youtube! Its so interesting :D i'd be really interested to see one on a disney animation that wasn't that successful just for contrast you know?
imSarahSnitch I think Oliver & Company would be good. People seem to like it, but no one talks about it. Or my favorite Disney movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Cinderella isn't my favorite Disney princess, but it is very special to my heart. My grandpa gifted the VHS for my bday back in the late 80's, and it was very well loved. I admired Cinderella, simply because she was truly kind, and no matter how badly she was treated, she kept her heart true. It also made me want to talk to animals, which I still practice... daily.
Every time you post a down to disness video I have to stop what I'm doing and watch it. Like it's almost a problem, pretty soon I'm gonna be pulling over on the freeway or something equally dangerous because I need to take a moment to learn about my favorite characters/company. Anyway! What I mean to say is good job on another magnificent video!
What always strikes me about Cinderella is the impact of Mary Blair, she was a concept artist who Walt really admired and loved the work of, and there are scenes where they straight up just ANIMATED HER CONCEPT ART - this is most clearly seen in the famous chase scene, where the Knights become these aggressive black and red shapes - almost like demons - chasing after Cinderella.
Another great episode of Down to Disness! I think for next month, you should cover either early renaissance (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King) or a "failure" from the early 2000's (Dinosaur, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Home on the Range)
That dancing on a cloud song is actually like one of my all time favorite disney songs. I've already decided to dance to it at my wedding! Also maybe do the little mermaid or pocahontas next? Please and than you!
Ah!!! I learned so much from this!!! Cinderella has always been in my top faves!!! I think the animated version and the new live action version are both beautiful movies. So glad you covered it!!
When I was little I looked up to Cinderella and I still do! Cinderella is a very good role model for all girls young and old I love both the movies!!! 😍 and of course she is my fav princess mad can you do Winnie the Pooh?
Despite even Walt Disney himself saying Cinderella was fighting for her dreams, I can't help but remember the Cheetah Girls song where they have the line, "I don’t wanna be like Cinderella, sitting in a dark, cold, dusty cellar, waiting for somebody to come and set me free..." and I've always liked the song for that, but in a way, I have to say both sides are right. She did fight for her right to go to the ball in the first place, she just wound up getting overwhelmed by chores and then her sisters ruined the dress the critters made her. But then she also just sat down and cried when she could have worked with the animals to remake something. But then of course, the story would be very different from the way it was meant to be. So it makes sense to think either way. (but, the fairy god mother did show up pretty quickly, and it was destined in the original story and Disney way to be fixed like that, so she did really try pretty hard to follow her dreams. She just was pretty humble when she had them at first, and then decided to find a way to triumph in the end). I really do like that Cheetah Girls song by the way. I like the lyrics/message in it, that sense of equality in love and being strong for yourself.
I am loving your Disness my favorite adaptation of Cinderella was Ever After I know it was released by Fox but Disney's Cinderella was a stepping stone for all adaptations. Favorite part is always the magic dress scene so magical. thank you for the history lesson love love love it.
I love Cinderella like she's my 3rd favorite princess! (Ariel and Rapunzel are 1 and 2, respectively) She is a great character and the original film is just sublime.
OMG!! It's here, FINALLY!! I've been waiting the whole month for this. As usual, very interesting and useful. I would love if you did an Atlantis or the Treasure planet Down to Disness, I think they are great movies and they are underrated. Thank you so much Sarah!!
Last year for holloween I carved my pumpkin to look like Cinderellas pumpkin carriage. Then I put a Cinderella doll inside with her head poking out the window. I spent a LOT of time making the wheels and finding a horse that was the right size!! It was ANAZING!!!! The only bad part was EVERY SINGLE LITTLE KID SAID " oh look it's Elsa !! Every single kid thought it was Elsa ! There parents had to tell them that it was Cinderella !!
It would be awesome to see Down To Disness on Lion King and on Beauty and The Beast both of my favorite Disney Films. Lion King being my favorite movie of all time. Seriously.
I love these videos so much, it's absolutely fantastic to hear the rich history of such an amazing industry and its art! Thank you for sharing these :) I would love so much for you to do an episode on Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's my favorite Disney film! The animation and score are stunning, the characters are poignant, and the story is one that I think anyone can connect with in one way or another!
2:07 Yes, double tracking is familiar to me. On the Beatles' song "I Should Have Known Better" John Lennon double-tracked his voice. And on a later song, "Julia," his voice would be tracked like this: Ju------li-a Ju------li-a
I thought Ilene Woods was the demo recording artist for the soundtrack and when Walt heard the demos, he asked her to do the voice for the film? I seem to remember that story from somewhere within the Cinderella DVD bonus features.... I have a framed print of Cinderella's dress transformation that hung over my bed as a kid :-) Definitely one of my favourites.
This is my favourite thing to watch on youtube! I think you should do Robin Hook or if youre willing to do non animated, maybe pirates of the caribbean? Cus it'll be interesting to see how it came from a ride to a film?
I love love love love down to disness ❤️❤️ I think a great movie to do next would be Peter Pan or Sleeping Beauty ❤️❤️ Your my favorite Disney youtuber, and I love this series! Keep going, your amazing 💗💗💗 ps I'm a annual pass holder at Disneyland :3 I would love to meet you ❤️
I just started binge watching these and I LOVE them!! Since you did both Snow White and Cinderella.. I would love to see Sleeping Beauty! Snow White, Cinderella en Aurora are my least favorite princesses (Snow White being the least of the least), but I WANT to start liking them more! You're actually helping me achieve this with these videos.. Seriously! :D So let's give Aurora some love, please!
U should do Aladdin next because I just traveled from California to New York with a group of kids from school and we all saw Aladdin on Broadway and I would love to learn some facts about the movie :)
0:393:124:53 me:little mermaid,beauty and the beast,aladdin,lion king,pocahontas,hunchback of notre dame,hercules,mulan,tarzan,treasure planet,alantis,lilo and stitch,enchanted,princess and the frog,tangled,brave sarah:elsa/frozen me: rolls eyes
I don't think I saw it mentioned already so The Black Cauldron. I'd be very interested on your thoughts with this movie. Or Lady and the Tramp or Robin Hood.
Cinderella may not be the first person you think of when you think a stereotypical "strong character" but in my opinion, she's just strong in a different way. She may not be very physically strong, but she is emotionally. Cinderella keeps her kind, gentle nature no matter what; she doesn't allow her difficult situation crush her spirt, and remains joyful and brave despite her hardships. Sure, she may not have a bow and arrow like katniss, or special powers like Elsa, but that's okay. The reason why she is so pure hearted and good is because her mother and father raised her to be that way, and their wise guidance has stuck with her and given her the endurance to press on and still have happiness regardless of the cruelty she faces.
Cinderella is my mom's favorite Disney movie, and Cinderella being her favorite Disney princess. But Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie and Belle is my favorite Disney princess.
Verna Felton also was the voice of Winifred from The Jungle Book and Aunt Sarah from Lady and the Tramp :) Could you please review Pete's Dragon or The Fox and the Hound?
Well, _The Art of Walt Disney_ by Christopher Finch is the ultimate one, but it's a HUGE and expensive coffee table book, unless you get one of the very condensed and abridged softcover editions. If you don't care about a Disney book having a lot of pictures, I highly recommend _Mouse Under Glass: Secrets of Disney Animation & Theme Parks_ by David Koenig.
totally agree on the live action cinderella, it was SO GOOD. i like died in the theatres after i watched it, i even watched it the 2nd time a week later :D still luv it. not gonna spoil it, but if u havent seen it....GO WATCH IT!! :DD
I love your videos. I have so many ideas for videos for you to do cause your awesome. I like mulan and lion king and my favorite 101 dalmatians but I really want know about The Hunchback of Notre Dame or beauty and the beast. I love those sound tracks I want to know how those movies had a impact on Disney history.
Pete's dragon, the character, was animated, but the film was primarily live action. Much like Mary Poppins was primarily live action but did include some animation in the "Supercal" scene.

Kimee Faith Well said!
Kimee Faith If falling love means not even vaguely remembering what the person looks like then ya. Totally.
Its not exactly sexist, its just not empowering to women, she didn't attempt to do anything to get her way. She could've pushed down her stepmother and stepsisters and delivered herself to the ball. And remember, she also pointed out to the stepfamily that she was just as eligible to go to the ball after Lady Tremaine read the invitation.

I agree with the Atlantis idea! I love Princess Kida 💙
Abigail Cunningham My favorite movie involves a princess turned queen with very light hair who likes to wear blue...Not Frozen though.
Claire KillsCoffee It'd be really cool to see an episode about The Black Cauldron!
Cinderella isn't my favorite Disney princess, but it is very special to my heart. My grandpa gifted the VHS for my bday back in the late 80's, and it was very well loved. I always love to see that there's a new episode of this series! So interesting to learn. Keep up the great videos!
Ah!!! I learned so much from this!!! Cinderella has always been in my top faves!!! I think the animated version and the new live action version are both beautiful movies. So glad you covered it!!
Love the video! Learning the little tidbits about the movies is so much fun. Maybe you could do 101 Dalmatians next!
Your makeup in this video is so gorgeous!
I didn't know that Disney might have been the first to use double-tracked vocals! That's so cool!
I'm a big fan of this series, its super interesting.
Thanks for the time and effort Sarah, keep it up!
Is anyone else addicted to Down To Disney videos!????
When I was little I looked up to Cinderella and I still do! Cinderella is a very good role model for all girls young and old I love both the movies!!! 😍 and of course she is my fav princess mad can you do Winnie the Pooh?

I love watching your vlogs. Your energy is both fun to watch and best of all, it's contageous!

Does anyone know a good disney history book? Because I'm just fascinated with these videos and the cool history behind the movies!

Please do little mermaid
