Agree but there’s only so much a catcher can frame the pitch to make it believable. Some of these strikes were terrible. Not sure if lasik eye surgery would help him at this point
If I was an MLB pitcher and Hernadez was behind the plate, I'd throw every pitch 2-3 inches off the plate. Why would you ever throw more hittable pitches in the zone when he's calling those as strikes?
The guy literally sued the league claiming racial discrimination because he wasn’t promoted to crew chief and given playoff games. Not sure I’d say he’s a great guy off the field.
@@calibrexdaoc Its the opposite problem in this case. The ump union is too strong, not too weak. He is protected even though he doesnt meet the standards required and has a history of being unable to do his job. Similar to the police unions who protect murderers and racists.
Yeah nah, I wouldnt trust this guy anywhere near me. If he acts like this at work, he is doing it at home too. Just because you dont see it doesnt mean its not happening.
I just remember a few years ago when the Cardinals started at home with this hack being the HP Umpire. Top of the first, it was one of the above calls. And the Cardinals announcer says. I see Angel is already in mid-season form.
His strike zone is all over the place. He's a House of Mirrors Umpire, disgraceful. To think he brought race into why he's never ump'd in a World Series... smh Just disgraceful.
Given the fact that nobody has anything good to say about the way Angel calls the games, you would think that he would at least attempt to get better but he doesn't seem to give a shit about what he's doing.
I'm amazed none of these batters are walk away from the plate, treating it like a blind man's cane. I wouldn't be able to hold myself back, personally.
Thing is, he's bad on both sides. He has no favorites. So all you'll be doing is taking yourself out of the game. (Don't get me wrong, he's a pain to watch, and shouldn't be refereeing little league).
There are a lot of umps who think they are bigger than the game and by far this video nails it! He is equally bad as a base ump, thank God for video review. This is the poster child for a robo ump!
The teams/players are the ones that really need to do it. If they took a stand and said we refuse to play if he is on the field, he would be gone immediately. MLB cant afford to break their tv contracts with forfeited games, but they can afford to have a few thousand less tickets sold from a fan boycott. Schwarber hates his guts, someone needs to tell him to start a player boycott.
I'm convinced Angel doesn't even track the ball and just checks where the catcher ends up framing it. Just put him on third base ffs, stop putting him in these positions that matter.
It's not even about calling balls and strikes though. He misses calls all over the diamond. First base, third base, outfield. You name it. It's like he shows up drunk or something.
For most of those we use to call that a large strike zone, and if that strike box wasn't put on the TV screen nobody would say anything. A couple of the way outside one were pretty bad though.
I used to defend umpires calling balls and strikes and never using an automated strike zone. After watching years of the awful balls and strikes called I can’t defend them anymore. It’s gotten worse as well.
Whenever you are anxious about your next job interview, or you think you're bad at your job, or are losing the motivation to get that promotion.... REMEMBER: Angel Hernandez still has a job at the highest level of the sport.
The announcers saying it's "on the corner" over and over again- wtf? Can we assume that MLB execs have sent an edict banning criticism of Angel? Holy crap!
Actually during the Phillies-Brewers game where Schwarber got ejected the announcers were talking about the players reactions to his calls. They knew he was bad , even by his own standards that night v
I have a problem with the computer generated strike box, no matter who the umpire is. Sometimes the top of the box is letter high and sometimes it is belt high. The strike zone on it's lower end is at the hollow of the knee but sometimes the box is at the top of the knee and I have seen the box seem to shift during an at-bat.
I actually agree with you, but even if we take the box off, Angel Hernandez is still way off. I will agree that some of those calls are strikes, even if not touching the box, but quite a few of them were "just a bit outside"
He consistently is rated at the bottom of all umpires. Yet the union will never support MLB firing him. Sometimes you just have to admit that your union member should be fired. You’re holding back the advancement of a more qualified umpire by continuing to support this farce. Being an MLB umpire is kinda like being on the US Supreme Court. Lifetime position regardless of how terrible you are. This spring they held those “futures” games for the top prospects. In those games players were allowed to challenge umpires calls. The system worked perfectly! Some calls were overturned. MLB needs to do this for the Major League too ASAP
Let's be fair about something though... that Braves-Phillies highlight where they have a position player pitching, if it's remotely close he gets those strikes.
It was announced about an hour or so ago that Angel Hernandez has retired and will not umpire another MLB baseball game. Edit: I’m sure you’ve noticed but he pretty much always falls for the catcher’s pitch-framing. It’s ridiculous.
To be fair, the vast majority of these were close to the strike zone, and could have been called that way by any other umpire. His actual greatest hits would be the times when he more obviously blows it.
I love it. " Called a strike according to Hernandez" I can't understand how the Union can justify Angel Hernandez any longer. Its honorable to protect our own but at some point when your own just really sucks and damages the game, it's time to take action. The man is not MLB caliber. He is so bad and has been so bad for so long, every pitch is questioned and the man just isn't good. Hernandez is on a different playing field than these other Pros. Angel has a 24 zone strike insead of the the widely accepted 9 zone.
He definitely missed a lot of calls, but a lot of them could have been at least partially excused if he showed any kind of humility on the field. That being said, as a spectator, I'd rather have an ump call a wider strike zone. Get them to swing the bats. Incidentally, I'm sure they study film on umps just like they study film on pitchers. Tell your team "we've got a big strike zone today. Protect the plate, protect half of both batter's boxes, ankles to armpits. Swing, damnit."
I think as soon as it's known that Angel Hernandez is the home plate ump both teams should call for the game to be played under protest and see how many games and teams it takes before the MLB nuts up to the umpires union and fires this guy for incompetence.
Angel Hernandez, the best there is, the best there was, the best that will ever be. perfection, never has called a pitch correct.
He has, but when it happens, it is an accident, a coincedence, a freak occurrence.
Freddie's eye roll at 1:05 pretty much says it all.
Harper at 1:13 too 😂
The look when you realize the angel show has begun
Angel gets 100% fooled by the catcher framing pitches.
Exactly what I was going to say. Some of these catchers have perfected their technique in framing the pitch and Angel isn't good enough to catch them.
A lot of the time yes, but at times like 3:46 he's really just bad
it looks like that but no.... he really is that bad
4:58 absolutely horrendous
Agree but there’s only so much a catcher can frame the pitch to make it believable. Some of these strikes were terrible. Not sure if lasik eye surgery would help him at this point
These batters are straight up PUNISHED by Hernandez for having a good eye. It’s disgraceful.
Mlb: we're gonna try to speed up the game.
Angel: hold my strike zone.
Here after the retirement announcement 😂
Actually, these ARE his best calls...
Well, he is consistent. Strikes are just off the plate.
If I was an MLB pitcher and Hernadez was behind the plate, I'd throw every pitch 2-3 inches off the plate. Why would you ever throw more hittable pitches in the zone when he's calling those as strikes?
I would throw outside low pitches that’s usually what he calls strikes
He usually calls strikes off the plate, not on. He missed many down the middle and called them a ball.
Umpire Angel Hernandez missed 23 calls in the #Yankees #Astros game.
He now has the lowest correct call rate in the league.
Should we be celebrating 🎉
HOFer for the worst ever
Surprised he wasn’t already lol
We probably have to thank Angel Hernandez for the pitch clock because it sped up the time that everyone was using to complain about him
off the field, an amazing guy. super nice and caring of the community. on the field, worst umpire in history.

It's really not that complicated with Angel Hernandez. Balls are strikes and strikes are balls. Swing (and pitch) accordingly.
If it was a real "very best" it would be a blank screen
“Best of” and Angel Hernandez are so far from each other it would take 10,000 years for light to reach each other
The fog one
"for hitters and for the outfielders to pick up the ball"
Umpires should have been added to that
Umpires should've TOPPED the list!
Who’s here for the announcement of his retirement?
I would love to see AF draw what his strike zone is. I think he likes his punch out routine and watches it on sports center over and over.
He seems to think a baseball bat is about 50% longer than it actually is.

Doesn't do mainstream titles, and has a good range for type of content that is enjoyable for baseball fans like me. Thumbs up

Am curious if anyone has sorted these bogus calls by inning to see if they detect a pattern of wanting to go home.
That AR strike zone square has destroyed Angel’s whole life.
Exhibit A- when the players' union calls for robot umps.

Angel missed a balk and then called a neck-high pitch a strike in a TOR-NYY game recently, all in a split second. That’s two for one …
you might as well swing at everything. If it's a ball he'll call it a strike. And if he calls it a ball that means it was right down the middle.
