- Open your hips, develop the flexibility necessary for lotus posture Padmasana - and sit more comfortably in any cross-legged position. Aruna and Sukadev instruct you in butterfly (Bhadrasana), Knee-Rocking (Yoga Nidra Pre-Pose), and the sitting triangle. If you master these three preliminary exercises, you will master the full lotus pose quite easily.

so far the most beneficial lotus pose tutorial, especially the feet stretch. From almost no lotus, I ended up holding the pose for 10 minutes after just one session. Namaste 🙏🏻
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for, thanks!
After 2 months of 4 days a week exercises, I've managed to do it on one side and later after 1 more month did it on another too!
Thank you so much i was able to do it right away although i couldnt hold it for too long but that comes with practice. I have never been able to do it before and i need this for my practice. Thank you so much!
Thanks a lot, I tried this for a month and it worked for me . 😊
With this video alone I was able to make it into the position for the first time, thank you
Feeling proud that my indian culture is spreading over world ❤️❤️❤️
It's not indian culture it's yogic culture

Thanks for talking about modifications. I did not have any knee tightness a few months ago when doing lotus position, but have been walking alot more and now my knees hurt/tight. I need to find exercises to get them more stretched.
Going to try this everyday. Definitely feeling the stretch
We are on the same path
Om Shanti! I love the principles and actions of Yoga vidya. I wish the videos had other people Talking and Not exclusively Sukadev. ❤
Thank you so much ☺️
I've never struggled with something so much I must be one of the people who this is gonna take months smh
Don't rush it, it can take many months, if you try to do it too fast you can damage your knees for life, patience and you'll get there!
Your one of many
I can't even get to Burmese!

wow, i was able to sit in a lotus position by the end of the video. That is amazing! only not for a long time, still have a sensation of too much strain in my feet. Will be practicing it for a week and curious about a result. Thank you!
That´s amazing! All the best for you 🙏💜🕉️
Nine years later & still usefull. Thank you.
Wow its amizing
I absolutely love this routine! This has really helped me getting better and better lotus pose + I can kick a lot better now and it's also not too challenging, so I can do it in the morning without having the need to go to the shower. Brilliant job!
Thanks for your feedback.
We are glad that we contributed to your development!

Aruna and Sukadev, informative video. To complement the useful demonstration in this video I can say that after training in the Butterfly Pose, you should not - if being a beginner - start right away to train sitting in the Lotus Pose (Padmasana). Instead you should just start with one leg at a time by practicing the Half Lotus (Ardha Padmasana). Only after you have trained in the Half Lotus for a while, should you progress to practice with both your legs at the same time for the Lotus Pose.
To sit in the Lotus pose for a longer time you should also begin to build up your back muscles - as many people are just too used to sitting on chairs with back support and neglecting the back muscles. Thus endeavour to sit without any back support - whenever you are sitting down during the day. To take your mind off the effort you could do this while for example watching a movie and setting your mind to sit completely upright for the whole duration of the movie.
I have a video on Padmasana in my channel guiding you through this whole process and providing some complementary advice to what Aruna and Sukadev have demonstrated in this video.
Fine stretching for lotus.
Lovely style
thank you : )
thank you
hard to come back to this after 5 years and not be frustrated that not only did I lose the ability I am far less flexible than when I initially began all those years ago haha. oh boy the 30s is a diff time for the body than the 20s.
Thank you for the amazing practice! I need to work on butterfly and bring my foot to my sternum... I also realised that is my ankle that cannot internally rotate much.. Any exercises I could do to make it more mobile?? Thank you again
Thank you it word
आभार 🙏
Any tips? Doing these, even against a wall, really pulls my mid back muscles over time
Thanks
beautiful
So, since I'm so noob that I can't even perferm a sukhasana, does this exercise help me for it too? I wish to do a bit of yoga but I can't even cross my legs, you know. Thanks
I literially used a triangle ruler for the 90° exercise
Find it funny we’re not able to see the teacher, but it has a nice clear explaining 🤙🏽

I need this practice as a part of my spiritual journey. I realized I can't meditate long without sitting in a lotus posture. Thank you!
Finally some real yoga!
One-pointedness of mind is the best posture.
@@nnlniclb Agreed. Flexibility expands your ability to practice one-pointedness in different settings, though. It's hard to concentrate without relaxation, and it's hard to relax when you're very tense or in pain. Anyone's practice will benefit from being more flexible.
holding the foot to the sternum is something I have never seen/done before. Felt soooo good! And I loved the phrase at the end "not yet young". Thank you so much for such a helpful video!
This video was so helpful to me! I've watched a dozen videos from different people about how to prepare for lotus, and yours was the only video that I really understood and could work with.
Thanks for this. I've never been very flexible and have long wanted to sit lotus style. But the real reason I'm grateful for this video is because the first stretch, the butterfly, has cured me of chronic back pain I've suffered from for 20 years. Thanks very much and namaste!
this is my favourite yoga channel, I started yoga with Vidya. in september 2014. I even remember my first practice :) then I went to yoga classes. but never ever will forget this beautiful voice. thank you a lot

Wow what a great video. I liked the pillow under the feet this should help open the hips for an easier transition into lotus. I'll add that into my practice :)
Thanks a million...this is something that I'd been looking for a long time.
Thanks to India for giving the wonderful yoga and Pranayama to the world. It has been an integral part of Indian hindu culture for thousands of years.
