Hi guys! Andy back again!
Welcome back to the Heresy Made Easy playlist! Right after the Ultramarines, of course we had to cover the Word Bearers! Speak the words of Lorgar and you shall follow my tutorial in the glory of Chaos. This Word Bearer strikes the perfect tone of brown/red to me, what do you think of it? Hope you enjoy this one and make sure to look out for more Legions soon! My goal is to cover every Legion by the time the Age of Darkness box hits shelves!
While I don't have transfers for every Legion, I do have a tutorial for applying transfers to Space Marines which you can check out here:
• How to Apply Transfers...
I'll be covering all 18 legions over the coming months so let me know what legion you'll be playing or painting! Make sure you stick around for the rest of my series, no matter what legion you choose, and it will help with 40k painting too!
As requested, paint lists are back-check the end of the description!

Working hard to get each Legion covered by the time the Age of Darkness box drops...wish me luck! Keep your suggestions coming so I can get to your favourite Legion quicker-if I haven't already covered it!
The brown contrast paint worked really well as a slight undertone complimenting word bearers red. Great job
Thank you so much pal.
Awesome and accessible!!
Thanks man. That’s what I’m going for.
This was the one I was waiting for, you nailed it!! Thank you for the content.
Ah cheers pal. Really appreciate that.
These videos have been awesome as I try to decide what I want to do with my legion. Thank you so much for all the work you have put into these
No worries pal. Just hope they help a few people out.
Not what I was expecting at all but that end result is just awesome. This Heresy series is going to help so many players. Glad you're doing this.
That’s very kind thank you so much.
I would not have thought to do the red this way! Its a great effect.
Glad you liked the video, hope you try it out some time!
You are on fire boss!
Cheers dude.
This video was amazing and I am using a similar theme for the Word Bearers. Thanks for the great advice. Take care.
Glad you like it pal.
Super impressed with the end result. I do think that many new Horus Heresy players will find your videos "Heresy Made Easy" super usefull!
Thanks pal I am hoping that is true.
I have been contemplating what factions to use for HH & this video definitely helped me settle on Word Bearers.
Word Bearers are always a good choice!
This looks great, real fun & easy to paint too. I've been considering starting up a Word Bearers force because of how much I love their novels, and if I ever get around to it, I'll surely be using this method. Cheers!
That’s great to read pal thanks.
Thanks for this fast and easy take on painting Word Bearers! I have a bunch of Terminators I need to paint and I think I'm going to try this on them.
No worries pal. Glad you liked it and hope you get your terminators done nice and quick.
Love it. Once again I want to try it!
You should man it is as a really fun one to do.
looks amazing, but yes, i was worried at the wash stage too :-D
Hhahaha knew you would be.
@@MediocreHobbies I knew from the other HH videos that you would pull it back at the layering stage, but i would probably have been reaching for the biostrip :-)
yet another excellent paint job
Thank you.
Amazing work! wont lie was surprised seeing a brown going on but i can see it really helps the overall color of the armor!
Thank you. I knew it would freak people out lol
Contender from my favourite colour scheme 😍
To kind again.
The reikland flesh gave a really nice color to the leadbelcher. Definitely something I need to make a mental note of
Ye it’s a funny thing what it does but it works. If you have it try the gloss version of it on metallics as well. Looks great.
I have painted wordbearers since 2004. And i am very intressed in trying this out. I have been inspired by the Ash company.
That’s ace dude. Glad to see a veteran of the word bearers can get something out of the videos. Thank you.
Fantastic now I know how to paint my word bearers 😎
Glad it will help you pal.
Another great painting tutorials for the zealous boys. Can't wait to see your take on the best Legion of all time. Iron within.
Hahahah soon pal. There are plans afoot.
I never thought about using brown tbh, great video
Thank you.
Gorgeous work, really good eye to think of them as a rich brown than red, never thought of it that way.
Thanks pal. Ye trying to make sure they are all rely distinct is important to me. So dark angels raven guard and iron hands are going to be a hoot lol
@@MediocreHobbies Looking forward to it.
Love the fact I'm not the only one who wants a deep red/brown. It's described as scab red for a reason. A scab isn't bright red, it's practically brown. Never liked seeing khorne or especially mephiston red on them. With that being said I use army painters chaotic red. It's perfect in my opinion
100% agree.
Looking forward to your take on the perfect legion 3 the Emperor’s Children! It was very strange seeing the brown mid point but it does help get that more rich dark brick colour for the Word Bearers.
Thanks pal. Ye I knew it would worry some people half way through so I had to tell you all to trust me lol. I do like me some emperors children. Soon pal.
If you see this, i would love to see you paint Lorgar
I would love to paint them all. But that’s a lot of money. So every now and again one will drop.
I know it’s not the point but I think the final red in this video would make a very nice “dried blood” colour for some future 40k World Eaters, especially with that Brass-ish effect on the shoulder trims.
That’s a great point. And it’s Great to just see my videos inspiring more hobby it’s great.
Fantastic video! Do you still recommend Reikland Flesh shade considering the formula changed?
Thank you for this guide.... really split between Word Bearers or loyalist Emperors Children... however want to convert Eliphas the Inheritor from the Heresy.... so decision might have been made for me.
Hahaha nice. Two great choices. Glad your liking the videos.
Awesome again.
Salamanders next? 👉👈
Not next but soon. They are one of my favourite’s.
@@MediocreHobbies Great, I‘m currently planing a Salamanders HH Kill Team (Age of Darkness by Ossified Mods) but have not yet planned the approach!
Love this mate. Using brown as your base coat for the red reminds me of when I worked for GW Newcastle, we used to blend from scorched brown up to blood red, took forever but looked ace.
I'm currently on the fence about which legion to go with, but I have always been a word bearers fan, and will most likely use this scheme if that's what I settle on when I pick up the boxed set.
That’s ace dude. Really glad you liked the scheme.
Controversial opinion, but I preferred the look of the amour before you applied the regular red. Might have to steal this!
Hahaha I was quite keen on it myself to be honest. Just a little dark for word bearers
@@MediocreHobbies I quote like that! I wonder how they come out if you wash them with carroburg crimson rather than Sepia. Might bring out a more reddish tint and really get that "We paint our armier the colour of dried blood" effect.
In any case, I'm waffling on. Great vid!
@@TDBWarHound HahahHa no worries.
good job! i was wondering if you could do a wordbearer video with their original grey power armor?
Possibly in the future. Still have 10 more legions to paint.
At this stage I trust it was all gonna come together.
For lenses, you ever try any of the gemstone paints from Citadel? You get the tint and a nice Gloss effect at the same time. :)
They do indeed im a big fan of them. They are a bit sticky so it makes the process a little slower. It’s not that I don’t like them I just forget they exist
Thank you for posting such practical videos; it's a good reminder that things can look great without spending tons of time and money going for Instagram perfect.
I really appreciate that pal.
Love the work you do for regular gamers. Could you do a comparison of original legion colours names -> their direct descendants or most renown ones? Its out there but its kinda buts and pieces everywhere. Thanks!
That’s a big ask. I shall finish my legion series and then see where I go from there. There is for sure a few alt colour schemes I want to do.
@@MediocreHobbies No rush. Just saying and as you know discussion helps ;)
Hello, it looks fantastic ! I personally don't have an airbrush (and I don't feel confident enough with my painting skill to use one), so I can't do the zenithal. What would you recommend me to do, to get a similar result ?
I didn’t use an airbrush. I just used a can of grey seer spray. Quick and easy no pressure.
Do I need contrast medium? my brown seems really off and I just learnt I may this... thanks! ps I am trying to paint the scheme just before the red (like a bronze brown you have) thanks!
Cheers pal. Glad your liking the content. And no I used no medium. Should be fine without.
Im the same with corvus black, love the matt finish and feels abbadon can come across too flat without grey/blue highlights.
100% agreed. Great minds.
This now my paint scheme for my WBs - it's great! Word bearer red is the hardest step because it's weirdly a very thick red is there a specific medium ratio you use?
No just a touch of water nothing crazy.
Thanks
Seriously appreciate the support, glad you enjoyed the video! If you ever have any questions let me know!
Really liking this colour scheme.
One question with regards to the wash after base coats, do you get a lot of the metal flakes spreading across your paint work?
Also I found certain areas after washing over Contrast Blood Angels looked to be bubbling in patches? The red had at least five hours of drying.
I wait i till the paint is dry before washing. So there should be no metal flakes. Unless your thinning your paint down and are using water you washed your brush in. That mite be contaminated with metal flakes. And I’ve never seen any bubbling at all. Are you using and harsh thinners or mediums?
@@MediocreHobbies nope just the wash with water.
But I run two water pots to make sure I don’t have contamination?
I’ll play around with it.
Doing the Blood Angels scheme you showed on some of the original 80’s plastic MKVI.
Plus I’m working through the Space Hulk Terminators.
@@nickarmiger2003 very cool. I’d love to see them when done. Let’s hope those issues don’t show up again maybe just a one of.
Still waiting for your take on my beloved Space Wolves. IV Legion is best legion!
I start the wolves video tomorrow. So your time has come.
@@MediocreHobbies Yes! Thank you. I really like your heresy style, and I subscribed to you for them. Any chance you will do weathering tutorials to go along with them?
@@davidteel7701 I can do a bit of weathering on the wolves if you like.
@@MediocreHobbies That would be amazing, thanks!
Would it be drastically different with wraithbone instead of grey seer? Debating if i need to go get a new spray or not
It wouldn’t be all that different, the main thing would be to be consistent with whichever primer you choose so all your models will match!
Will they release upscaled MK3?
I know the difference between mk3 and m6 isn't that big but my OCD is bugging me and i just love the mk3 i dont know what to do
There pretty much the same size. The mk6 are just standing straighter.
@@MediocreHobbies thank you! I've been trying to get some MKIII but they are sold out everywhere.. also great tutorial!
Which models are these? I would really love them for either a salamanders or blood angels army, they look so good, especially with these paint jobs
Mark 3 marines from the Horus Hersey. One of my favourite armour types
@@MediocreHobbies are they a new kit? Or are they an old one? Can I still get it basically
@@jarenalfred66 there a good few years old but there getting reboxed into 20 man sets at the moment so probably not on the website.
@@MediocreHobbies ok awesome, i'm excited to get some of these for salamanders and blood angels, and some beakies for Raven Guard
How would you use achieve the same colors on vehicles?
Exactly the same way. I do tanks and stuff in a few ways. Check out my tank videos on the heresy playlist.
@@MediocreHobbies Thanks man I'll check it out! Pretty sold on following this for my word bearers.
Hi. H how do you thin your paints?
Bit of water or this time of year a wet pallet.
Grey and silver for word bearers not red and silver. The red and silver colors in the Word Bearers legion was meant for the Serrated sons after their venture into the eye of terror
Not sure your rite on that one.
Posh boys 🤣
Hahaha there not that posh.
