What should I explore next in my Day ___ Was Born series?
A sitcom called new girl
edit: also I love your videos😃
MASH
Hmm, well as it naturally connects to Sunny in Philadelphia, why not do one for Seinfeld. If not that, I’d be interested in what you would say about Cheers
The Simpsons would be a good choice since it kicked off the whole "how _ died" series. I don't think it was ever bad to start off with, but definitely very different in tone, and it wasn't until later on that it became the show that's so revered today.
I think a great show to do in this series would be Fringe
Rob: "We don't want Danny DeVito on the show."
Producer: "You gotta pay the troll toll."
Hahaha
GREAT comment.
Perfect😆
You funny asf
“Okay, get Danny DeVito on the phone as quickly as possible” = “Here’s your toll, troll!”
Producers: We're getting Danny DeVito.
Rob McElhenney: We’re not getting Danny DeVito.
Title Card: *_”The Gang Gets Danny DeVito.”_*
Haha
This little short might as well be called 'The Gang Gets Danny DeVito'

A true Bovine Joni cancer beard situation.
Hilarious.
I have so much respect for Danny for doing basically anything the writers ask him to do on the show. For such an absolute class act like devito, Frank Reynolds does some absolutely depraved stuff in the show and it’s great to know that he’s laughing along with the audience
Danny is the greatest actor of his generation
@Prashanth Panicker chevy chase and danny devito are ultimately oppisite ends of the old man on a sitcom full of "'"youngsters"" spectrum.
an international treasure
He's going real weird with it
Wrerwrruttuu
Kaitlin Olson's words on how to write for women are perfect. You don't need to write for a woman, or a guy. Just... write the character.
The day Rob's love for Kaitlin was born
@Mitchell Movie Productions omg what are you on about?
@Mitchell Movie Productions You forgot to make it funny, bub.
@Mitchell Movie Productions way to miss the point entirely pal.
Same idea on how to write for a gay character. Just write the character
_"I'm the Trash Man. I come out and throw trash all over, all over the ring. And then, I start eating garbage."_
*~ Danny Devito*
I had to include that. Classic.
When I'm dead just throw me in the trash.
@@elperronimo I knew someone was gonna comment this
Yo this is favorite line from frank
Fight for the rights of every man!
the way kaitlin delivers her lines is just perfect. her growly angry scream is just hilarious & easily relatable. i love that she spoke up & stood her ground, because the dynamic wouldn't have worked long the way it started.
Those random Kaitlin Kicks always make me lol. Like, actually out loud!
I think Always Sunny is at its best when it uses its format as an allegory. Episodes like "The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award", "Sweet Dee Gets Audited" or "Reynolds v. Reynolds: The Cereal Defense" where each member of the gang represents a concept pushed to its most vulgar state are some of the most cleverly written satire I've ever seen.
Can't wait for the inevitable COVID Always Sunny episode "The Gang Doesn't Quarantine"
Yeah, the social commentaries are fantastic. It's what's kept the show so relevant over the years.
100%, I think the gang tries desperately to win an award is the shit
They practically did it in the quarantine episode. The one time you can't say Simpsons did it first!
Is the show still airing episodes currently? There are only 8 seasons on Disney+ so I’m not sure how many seasons there are in total.
@@Kai-yt4vz Season 15 is in the writing phase. There are 14 seasons total.
It's fun watching Charlie go from somewhat literate to writing in heiroglyphs.
If here by now...then bad place be. Trouble time for you...when heat comes.
Jesus Christ, the kid's an idiot.
It’s all that paint he huffs
pretty sure he was going by Chrundle the Great back then
Who knew that network execs could positively effect a show.
I know. Maybe the one and only time.
@@EntertainTheElk Not really. On Spongebob, Nick said they wanted Spongebob to school. They perfer their shows to be "kid focused". In the end they compromised and had Spongebob go to boating school. I think that improved the show because it gives Spongebob someplace to go other than the Krusty Krab and ads more variety to the episodes.
@@EntertainTheElk the executive who recommended a female character in Seinfeld.
Mac shooting into the car in the wedding dress as Charlie holds poppers under his nose... should’ve won an Emmy.
One of the most iconic scenes of the show, for sure.
I hope there will never be a "The Day It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia died". I love this show way too much.
Not as of yet! Still going strong.
I personally think it died after Season 10. The seasons after that have maybe one or two great episodes whereas season 1-10 pretty much every episode was gold.
I think it died after Dennis "leaves" after that it feels rushed plus Glenn stopped writing
It definitely did.
@@jasonbanuelos7569 he's writing again for this newest season and with the year break, I think they're gonna have lots more refreshing and exciting ideas.
Also I think nothing sums up the characters better than their similar, yet distinct, response to Frank choking to death in "The Gang Chokes"
Yes!
That and how they react to therapy in "The Gang Gets Analyzed"
Agree.
@@chickencurry420 also agree.
@@chickencurry420 lololololol yessssss 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mad props for Devito hitting the floor running. Frank and Charlie are my favorite TV couple ever. It would have been so easy for Devito to kill the show on or off camera. He is awesome and his Frank is absolutely hilarious.
Yeah Frank and Charlie have a really fun dynamic.
Like chevy chase...
@@EntertainTheElk Fun fact I just noticed
Charlie was on Reno 911! and Danny was a producer on Reno, he even showed up to do some promos for them
Gruesome twosome
A scene that always gets me is when they have to quarantine and Charlie and frank still wanna sleep together in the bar
The chardee macdennis episode has not only been the way I’ve gotten tons of people into the show, but also provided me and my friends with the best drinking game
No way. Same here, me and my friends play that game religiously/ super seriously
You have to put in a bit of legwork to make the game but I’ve found that’s the most fun session
The "STAB SOMEONE!" gag in The Gang Gets Held Hostage was a brilliant piece of violent slapstick humour
It always kills me when he pours milk on the wound.
“RYAN. STAB SOMEONE”
“AHHHH”
it's somebody
It's the way Ryan runs in out of frame for me - jesus christ it makes me laugh like an insane person every single time.
@@samj4473 "somebodaaayy!!!"
An interesting thing to point out is that Always Sunny's concept and characters are so well fleshed out that the show has reached the "Writing Prompt" phase. Much like Seinfeld or South Park, the show has such a solid basis that writing plots and, to a certain extent, jokes is an insanely easy venture as it boils down to "How would the characters act if this happened" followed by "How can we make this worse". The genius of Always Sunny is how they managed to streamline the satire process so that virtually anyone could write an Always Sunny screenplay, you can just look at the news or listen to your friends talk and think "If I was a shitty person, how would I react to this ?" to write Always Sunny.
Of course, nobody is gonna take their jobs, especially not Reddit writers, but it is a fascinating phenomenon.
That’s so true. Take a bad topic and approach it from an insanely narcissistic point of view and you’ve already got half the plot
By far one of the greatest shows of all time.
Someone like me who grew up in Phili regularly binged the show in my adolescence. Love the gang.
It’s illegal to live in Philly and not watch It’s Always Sunny
Sounds like Bird Law to me.
Sicko.
IASIP is filmed in LA unfortunately
@@filmneek 2/3 of it is, alot of outdoor scenes are filmed in philly
season 2 episode 7 :the gang exploits a miracle was the moment it turned for me, not only is the whole gang there (frank too I mean) but its also the introduction of Cricket and his downward spiral directly because of the gangs actions, it shows just how despicable these people really are, they never pay for their bad deeds and never learn from them either. Albeit in a guilty pleasure way lol
Yeah that's a good choice!
I agree with you
Perfectly said.
Producer: "How are we going to make audiences watch this show?"
Danny DeVito: "Maybe you can get 'em to eat a shit sandwich. That would be fun!?"
I think the DENNIS system episode also does a good job of showing what this show is all about. It was actually the first episode I saw and made me go back and watch the rest
And let's not for get the Implication xD
Top episode for sure, made an already interesting character even more interesting.
As an OG fan, I gotta admit dude, you’ve made a convincing choice
Thanks!
@@EntertainTheElk yeah and I hate some of your choices
@@abdullayaser700 yeah well I hate some of your choices!
@@jewelyJewels so which one you hate and which one you loved
I’m surprised I thought it was at least somewhat successful from the start. I was in college when it came out me and my friends would watch and laugh.
Can we talk about how amazing Jimmi Simpson is as Liam McPoyle? Hope he and Nate Mooney come back for an appearance before the series ends
they came back in “The Gang Goes Bowling” in season 16
Before watching the video, IASIP was born for me when Charlie asked why that door says pirate.
2 episodes away from my date! "I see a door marked "Private..."
Love the election speech, also. Charlie's illiteracy as a whole is just hilarious.
The Gang Gets Racist is one of the funniest pilot episodes I've ever seen in my life
I rewatched all 14 seasons recently, and it's my favorite comedy show of all time. It gets more and more batshit insane as it progresses, and what's even more impressive is that it almost never dips in quality (season 13 did a bit, but it's due to Glenn Howerton being less involved IMO because season 14 was return to form).
It's like the network forgot they are still on and they are free to do whatever they want. And Dany DeVito is a legend and an international treasure.
I recently binged watched this show & loved it from episode 1. Seeing them grow up & progress really helped get through all 14 season of it - I never felt like it was a chore. I love this show man.
Agreed. I've been rewatching it again too. At the end of S3 right now. It's really solid right from the beginning.
I like how you can tell what season you’re watching based off macs body type
thank you for shouting out charlie work
probably my favorite episode
Charlie Work is such a fantastic episode. "Look at me when you're talking to me!"
My uncle always says “you move the dumpster you dumb bitch” lmao he doesn’t even watch it but saw that one part when I watched it and he never forgot
Danny Devito was THE BEST idea the suits upstairs ever came up with.
As someone who watches Sunny all the way through 5+ times a year I have to agree with pretty much everything here
Love it! Glad I got your stamp of approval.
@@EntertainTheElk It doesn't really fit into the video you made but I really love that Rob and Kaityln hated eachother at first then they ended up getting married lol
I love sunny and all the characters even the minor characters the moms mac s dad mc boils Artemis
It’s nice to see some love given to “The Gang Gets Held Hostage.” It’s a personal favorite of mine and it still makes me bust out laughing every time I watch it
Watching Charlie grab the basketball off the kids and smashing it against the backboard cracked me up again
Haha. I love that. And then in the same take he runs all the way down the court and blocks a kid's shot.
I'll agreed with the early season 3 episodes where Frank filed for bankruptcy, Dennis mom died, and Dennis becoming more of a psychopath. Those were the episodes that made me discover the show as a kid and never stopped watching.
The sheer chaotic energy this show manifests in ever single episode is always really fun to watch.
Hot take: Sunny over Seinfeld (huge Seinfeld fan so I’m not saying that lightly)
Missed an opportunity to title it "The Gang gets born"
..... damn it!
The fact that I know every one of these scenes and don't need audio to them while still laughing hysterically is proof that this will always be one of my favorite series.
Your Parks & Rec video convinced me to give the show a go, even took your advice to be kind to the first season (which I actually didn't find that bad, save for some of The Office riffing). I just finished it and it's now one of my favorite shows. Leslie is such an amazing character and I couldn't stop laughing whenever Pratt was on-screen. I guess now it's time I gave It's Always Sunny a try.
The episode where Ron has the hernia is when P&R found its footing.
At times like this I like to quench my thirst with a delicious Wolf Cola
The cola of closure
I would also like to offer you an egg in these trying times .
Its always sunny is easily my favorite sitcom. Its continued to remain funny and hold on to what made it special while throwing in some truly surprising stuff like Charlie Work even later in the show's life. Its a testament to how well they structured the concept.
Yeah every episode is solid, and every once in awhile they'll throw in a phenomenal episode.
By far the funniest sitcom ever
The Gang Gets Held Hostage is one of my all time favorites, it was probably my first favorite episode of the show
I know exactly when the show became my favorite. In Underage Drinking: A National Concern. When Sweet Dee asks the guys who just justified selling alcohol to minors “how do you live yourselves?” And they all answered “One day at a time” lmao 😂 I Knew I found the perfect show for me
Underage Drinking was a turning point for me too. It's the first episode I love.
Spot on. I loved it from the beginning because it was immediately different from every other sitcom out there. But the development of Dee, addition of Frank and deeper dive into the psychological issues innate in the other three really solidified it.
I feel like the episode "Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare" is where it really hit 6th gear and hasn't let up really.
It's always sunny works because...
of the implication.
Kaitlin Olson is the funniest woman in comedy. Sunny and the mick are both gold.
This is one of the few shows I can watch constantly over and over and NEVER get tired of it..constantly laughing 🤣
Charlie pegging the ball at the basketball hoop still makes me laugh every time.
The episode that got me hooked on this show was when Mac was upset he did not get molested by his Coach and showed his picture around when he was a boy saying how cute he was.
Then theres also that episode where they gave out print outs of a bicep so other guys can join their club but the picturr cut out looked more like a dick.
Then last was Fight Milk commercial and that just sealed the deal for me
I like that there weren’t any cheap “Frank is short” jokes, that I can recall anyways.
Only one I can recall is when the gang did a clip show, frank gives himself very long legs, but that's more franks self image than a short joke
In "Dennis and Dee get a New Dad" they point out that it doesn't really make sense for him to be their dad considering he's 5 foot. Dose that count? It's really just highlighting the absurdity of the casting.
@@leephillips4402 There were a couple of jokes like that but I didn’t think they were cheap.
I recall a lot more creepy old man jokes directed at him than short jokes. The only reference I remember to his height were Dennis and Dee pointing out they look nothing like him.
“Do you want to talk about that right now” is so unhinged and somehow feels like dennis from the start, amazing
If you're still doing "the day _ died" you should do an episode on glee
Airing of the first episode
Yep! I'm gonna keep that series going as well. It's been nice to take a break and focus more on positivity lately though. :)
glee didn't die because it was never born haha
@@RhysGBiv Glee, the first Stillborn series.
"The Day Glee Died On Arrival".
Perfect title.
Although I thought season 1 was great, I fell in love with this show in Season 2, Episode 4 - "Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom".
Charlie screaming into the phone "IT'S NOT OVER UNTIL I SAY IT'S OVER!!!" is one of my favourite moments, and the episode ending with that image of a single tear running down Charlie's face was absolute perfection.
Seriously one of the best shows out there.
That's a fantastic episode. Charlie's tear falling at the very end.
Easily my favorite sitcom of all time, and I hope it last for as long as possible. It'd be hilarious to see the gang become elderly one day, scheming and conning their way through old age.
Edit: Great video! I wish I'd found this channel sooner.
This is one of the very rare occasions where studio executives input actually helped to make a better show
That transition to the paid spot was arguably the best part of the video. And that’s saying something because it was all great!
This is easily one of my favorites. Episodes like this, "Who Pooped the Bed", "Who Got Dee Pregnant", "The Gang Dances their Asses Off" and "Paddy's Pub: The Worst Bar in Philadelphia" are excellent for newcomers to help them really understand the show and its characters.
The funniest ones/favorites I've seen are Frank Reynolds' Little Beauties, Chardee MacDennis, and Charlie Kelly: King of the Rats
My favorite is gang tries desperately to win an award cause of how accurate it was. But we could go all day about great episodes.
Love the editing at 8:05. Cutting between different times someone has told a story is a cool technique.
I think what also makes this show successful is that no episodes are filler. Every episode is great!
I like to think that Dee's character evolves with how the guys treat her 😄 she gets crazier because the situations do over time
To me, High School Reunion is one of the best outings of the series. Peak It’s Always Sunny while also being an episode someone who’s never seen the show can just jump in to and enjoy
Just started watching this a few days ago lol
It gets better and better
Its one of the few comedy shows that haw gotten funnier as it goes on
Awesome! Enjoy the show.
Same
I very much am
The way the Pilot was shot and performed almost seemed like it was ALREADY part of the series.
EDIT: Also, the blooper reels are just as great as the episodes themselves! That's how you know you've got magic.
Hearing how FX somehow didn't have the budget for marketing but could get Danny DeVito on the show for S2 just made me think they pulled a John Travolta in Get Shorty.
I laugh every time I see frank come into that shot with a 2 X 4.
This is an impressive exploration of the show. If you are taking suggestions I would love to see something like this for Trailer Park Boys. I cant seem to find many video essays or analysis videos for the show. Thanks for the great content.
We need this!
One of the things about Sunny is you can make a solid arguement for any of the main cast being the funniest character on the show.
Even seeing the clips with no audio makes me burst out laughing
When the bird started taking advantage of Cricket, that was when I fell in love with her character.
I discovered your channel via the Parks and Rec video and I've been binging your content! These are awesome. May I suggest the day X-Files died and the day Firefly was born? 😄
Glad that you found the channel! And I love both your ideas.
Digging the video, but something that’s sticking out to me (in a funny way) is how you altered the pitch of the music to avoid copyright claims when the music itself is in the public domain.
He did not alter the music, and he mentions around 4:10 that it's public domain music, so why would he.
@@Jesse__H if you listen closely to the original track of the Sunny theme and the track as it’s used here, you can hear a very slight pitch shift
You know what, that's actually something that happens sometimes when I import music into Final Cut. I hate that it does that. I wonder if its because I edit at 23.98 and the file may be a different frame rate. But yeah, didn't intentionally try to pitch it down. But good ear. I noticed that too.
@@EntertainTheElk I use Final Cut too. The way to fix this (if you notice it in the future) is to apply the "Pitch" filter and set it at ".3". If this doesn't sound right, then pitch is down to "-.3." Glad I'm not the only FCP user on here. Seems like everyone uses Premiere (which I personally could never get into). Great video, btw :)
I was obsessed with this show before it was hugely popular, and I really thought it would get cancelled. The first season was so hilarious, and by the third season I could tell people were getting it. Brilliantly subversive, irreverent comedy.
Is that Lil' Kev?
I haven't watched this show for a while, but this video made me realise just how much slapstick humour there is in "It's Always Sunny...", the background clips had me belly-laughing without any of their audio. Top-tier show! Great video.
"Charlie Got Molested" sold me on the show. The 1st appearance of the McPoyle brothers.
One of my favorite channels. Great content as always, my dude!
Thank you so much!!! Really appreciate that.
This show is very close to my heart. Thank you for making a video discussing it!
Absolutely. Glad you enjoyed it.
Can't think of a show more deserving of this series than Community.
The greatest show ever made and it's not even close
PERFECT choice of a turning-point episode. That's the one I got hooked on 😂
Glad you agree!
It's Always Sunny has always been fantastically funny. My sister, who is 13 years younger than I, introduced me to the show on the second episode. She was I think a Junior in high school - so I was already long out of the house and was over visiting and she showed me Charlie Gets Molested. I was hooked on it, but I feel the show got better once Frank (Danny DeVito) was introduced. And not just his own introduction but when it was stated that Frank is loaded and has a ton of money, and will do anything to make money - and Dennis mentioning in one episode that "None of this would have happened if it wasn't for you and your unlimited amounts of money" or something to that effect, it basically blew the doors off the show to do anything and see if they can get away with it. Unlimited amounts of money means that Frank could potentially get into and out of every situation ever imaginable.
this is sick parks and rec and always sunny are my two favourite shows
Good taste!
You've now inspired me to go back to the beginning and rewatch those first two seasons.
Chardee mac dennis and the cereal defense are just such classic episodes that are unlike anything ive ever seen. Needless to say those are probably my 2 favorite episodes i think
You can see as sweet Dee progresses and goes from being that character that is sort of the rule obeyed, but then turns as season progresses later on and you can really see where Dee gets in her groove around season 9ish.
Bottled episodes man ❤️. They’re amazing. Great video!!!!!
yes I totally agree the gang gets held hostage is my favorite too
Whenever I have tried to recommend Always Sunny to anyone who hasn’t seen it I say watch a few episodes from season 3, that’s where they truly hit their stride
Two greatest lines of Sunny
“Jesus Frank? Oh, jESus frANK, jeSUS FRAnk, jeez- oh somebody’s gotta get stabbed!”
“This sinbads house, AND YOU MY BITCH”
I started watching this show, after this video and now I can't stop. Someone send help. Thank you!
Kaitlin is in my opinion one of the funniest women of all time
I LUV The Nightman Cometh too, as well as Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom
I do agree, about the best episodes are when theyre, my favorite ep is literally the gang gets trapped.
that was the best segue into an ad I've ever witnessed. you earned my sub .
Glad to have you on board!
I recently binged watched the whole series and right after watching ‘the gang gets held hostage’ I immediately knew it was one of my favorite episodes. You can tell what kind of people they are by how they interact with one another. If you want to get someone to watch the show and enjoy it I definitely recommend that episode
The day it's always sunny in Philadelphia was born and changed everything and became a standout show truly worth watching ... Season 1, episode 1
I think most of TV shows get really good in the third season, except Arrested development which was great in the first episode
I never even realized that basically all of my favorite episodes were bottle episodes.
SOME (only some) of my “what made the show” (what solidified their character traits, etc) episodes, not in order:
the gang gets analyzed
the DENNIS system
the gang gets quarantined
charlie work
chardee macdennis: the game of games
charlie has cancer
reynolds v reynolds
the gang gets extreme: home makeover edition
the gang exploits a miracle
[the episode your whole vid is about ofc]
the “jokes on dee” episode (forgot name)
high school reunion
psycho pete returns (this one is a more minor one but special because it shows how truly awfully selfish they can be, wanting someone’s flaws only when it works for them, then wanting their good sides only when it would benefit them, then wanting none of it when none if it can be exploited by them lol, also we see frank get “Unzipped” again iirc)
the gang gets invincible
what’s the one where we first meet dennis as Brian Lafevre? that one is special to me for some reason
and probably my favorite, a classic for a reason- The Nightman Cometh
so many more so deserving of the title for me but those ones are iconic
the mac is a serial killer, fight milk, bird law, charlie and mac working in the mail room, rum ham, the gang sells out, gang buys a boat, and even a couple of the most recent season episodes notwithstanding
